And the answer might surprise you: you can't improve your WHIP score by working on your hands. At least not directly. Here's why. How the GOAT Scoring System Works Your GOAT score is composed of three components: Component Weight What It Measures ENGINE 60% Power generation through body mechanics ANCHOR 20% Setup stability and foundation WHIP 20% Hand action and club delivery At first glance, you might think: "WHIP is 20% of my score, so I should work on my hand action to improve it." That logic seems sound. But there's a critical design element you need to understand. The WHIP Ceiling: Your Engine Controls Your Hands Your WHIP score is mathematically limited by your ENGINE score. This isn't a bug—it's intentional. Here's why: In golf, good hand action is a result of good body mechanics. When your body moves correctly, your hands naturally deliver the club on plane with proper release. When your body mechanics are poor, you're forced to compensate with your hands. The problem? Compensation looks good in slow motion but produces inconsistent results on the course. The Math Behind the Ceiling Your ENGINE Score Maximum Possible WHIP 95+ (Elite) 100 (No ceiling) 85-94 (Good) ENGINE + 5 70-84 (Average) ENGINE × 0.95 55-69 (Weak) ENGINE × 0.70 Below 55 (Poor) ENGINE × 0.50 Real example: If your ENGINE scores 60, your WHIP is capped at 42—even if your hand metrics would otherwise score 90. This means a golfer with perfect-looking hand action but poor body mechanics will see that reflected in a low WHIP score. The system recognizes that those "good hands" are actually compensation, not efficient technique. Why We Built It This Way The GOAT system is designed to identify sustainable, repeatable swing mechanics—not flashy compensations that fall apart under pressure. Consider two golfers: Golfer A: Poor hip rotation, minimal separation, but "throws" their hands at the ball and squares the face through timing. On a good day, it looks great. On a bad day? Blocks and hooks. Golfer B: Solid hip drive, good separation, proper sequencing. Their hands are "quiet" because their body is doing the work. Consistent ball flight, day after day. Both might have similar raw hand metrics in a single swing analysis. But Golfer A's compensation pattern means their technique won't hold up. The ENGINE ceiling ensures Golfer A's WHIP score reflects this reality. Additional Protection: Compensation Detection Beyond the ceiling, the system has a specific compensation penalty: If your raw WHIP metrics score above 70 but your ENGINE is below 60, you receive an additional 40% penalty on your WHIP score. Translation: Good-looking hands with a bad engine is a red flag, not a positive. How to Actually Improve Your WHIP The path is clear: Step 1: Build Your ENGINE First Your ENGINE score is built from 24+ metrics including: Hip rotation and drive Sternum movement (drop, rise, explosion) Pelvis-thorax separation Shoulder rotation quality COM (center of mass) mechanics Tempo and timing ratios Focus on drills that improve these fundamentals. The Torque Bridge and Uppercut Punch drills specifically target ENGINE mechanics. Step 2: Stabilize Your ANCHOR While ANCHOR doesn't gate WHIP, a solid foundation makes ENGINE mechanics easier to execute: Head stability through the swing Proper setup positions Stance width and balance Step 3: Let WHIP Improve Naturally Here's the counterintuitive truth: as your ENGINE improves, your WHIP will often improve automatically. Why? Because good body mechanics create the conditions for good hand action. When your hips clear properly, your hands have room to drop into the slot. When your separation is correct, your release happens naturally rather than through manipulation. Many golfers are surprised to see their WHIP score jump 10-15 points after focused ENGINE work—without ever practicing a single hand drill. What About Hand Drills? Hand drills aren't useless, but they should come after your ENGINE is solid. Here's the progression: ENGINE below 70: Focus entirely on body mechanics. Hand drills will build compensation patterns. ENGINE 70-85: Begin integrating hand awareness, but body work remains primary. ENGINE 85+: Now hand-specific work can refine your delivery without creating compensation. The Tiger Woods Benchmark Tiger Woods has the highest score of any golfer we've measured: Component Score Range GOAT 96.5 - 98.0 ENGINE 96.0 - 98.5 ANCHOR 96.5 - 98.0 WHIP 96.5 - 98.5 Notice that his WHIP and ENGINE scores are nearly identical. That's not a coincidence. Elite players don't have "good hands" independent of good mechanics—they have good hands because of their mechanics. The Bottom Line You can't game the GOAT system by working on your hands while ignoring your body. The math won't allow it. And frankly, your ball flight wouldn't reward it either. If you want a higher WHIP score: Check your ENGINE score first Work the drills GOATY recommends for your specific ENGINE patterns Trust that better body mechanics will unlock better hand action The ceiling isn't a limitation—it's a guide. Thank you for the detailed explanation re WHIP. I would just add that Engine should be consistently 70-85 and Anchor consistently at about 80 before we start worrying about hands. It's early days for me, and I was pleased with my recent scores on 19 January in practice, but yesterday and today I've tried to take this to the range and the course. Once a ball and a target are in play it becomes very difficult to switch off the old arm-driven swing! BUT about 10%

Yes exactly, and this is literally precisely what GOATY and I have been working on this week. In order to create a new movement pattern in the brain, several things have to happen. But one of the main things is that you must make it impossible to return to the old pattern, otherwise the brain will always resort back to the older pattern because it's simply easier and the brain loves efficiency. That's why the new live lesson feature I'm building focuses solely on how to load properly in the backswing because almost no one is. That's the beauty of having all the swing data to analyze, I can see precisely what everyone is really struggling with and then build new tools to address that exact issue. BUT about 10% of the time I got the sequence right and the ball flew and club felt light, the other 90% of swings the ball felt dead and the strike felt heavy (just as GOATY described in the email today). So first I'm going to work on getting the new swing triggering properly, as when I get that initial trail hip move correct, it works - every time.

Here’s proof of how to increase your WHIP. I had a horrible WHIP score of 13 as I was still swaying back and through with the lead hip. So I did several live lessons with GOATY to focus on my engine and anchor. I received my best GOATY score yet. TAKE a LOOK at my WHIP IMPROVEMENT!!! +54.6!!!!! Thanks Chuck. I’m finally putting the pieces together of how to use the 3 S’s. I recommend using a club when you do the follow Live lesson to maintain the proper structure but NO ball. Slow down to 25% speed. Arms, hands and shoulders do absolutely nothing….i can’t emphasize that enough!!! Focus and letting your core drive the swing and leave upper body hands, arms shoulders alone to simply respond to your engine. I hope this helps others!!!

This will be hugely helpful to anyone that really embraces what you wrote because it is the true pathway to success. There are a ton of nuggets in this real world example. 1. Engine is everything and can't be faked or gamed. GOATY sees ALL! 2. I purposely built in many checks and constraints to ensure that your engine must be working first before GOATY ever worries about your whip. There's over 250k lines of code running behind GOATY so you're going to have a hard time figuring out how to outsmart him! 3. 54.6 point jumps like this can happen instantly and lead to transformative ballstriking when you follow the system. 4. ALWAYS practice with a club - ALWAYS. You CAN NOT experience the whip without it. 5. Your arms are there to provide structure NOT to power the swing. All good advice. It takes time and patience to learn to recruit the right muscles in the right order. For instance the feeling of internally rotating legs only really clicked this evening, after several tries of the Torque Bride drill. I also found that it’s important to setup symmetrically, without any tilt, so that the hips are balanced at the start.

This is super helpful and confirms a few things in my experience. I had been working with Hackmotion before Goaty arrived and didn't improve Hackmotion's version of WHIP. When I started using Goaty found the same problem. Now that you've explained how important the ENGINE scores relative to the WHIP it's another "ah ha" moment. Thanks for the explanation.

Congrats Diobocki! I only had one swing from the dozen I took yesterday that showed Engine/Anchor improvement but not much impact on the WHIP. I think I'm that guy that compensates vs. gets the mechanics correct. Will try the slow mo you mentioned. Thanks

Yes, I got higher WHIP scores once I slowed it down to understand the core integration especially on the recoil and release. Remember the arms, hands, shoulders do ABSOULTELY NOTHIING but respond to the core.

@Pettturu - Yes once I have stretched my core I simply let it recoil and the arms, hands, shoulders etc. do absolutely nothing but follow along! I noticed if I try to help it to speed up with my arms, hands GOATY sees it and your WHIP drops!!! Once I removed the "trying to help it part" my WHIP improved greatly. I hope that helps.
