This awesome drill will teach you to not cast the club and maintain lag into impact.

All right, guys. Hopefully you're enjoying using the Impact Cube. I've given you two killer drills that are gonna help you get into a perfect impact position, and create the perfect path coming from the inside to get rid of that nasty over the top move.

Now let's add a little zip and zing to this thing. Let's add some speed by creating more lag in the swing. Now, using the Impact Bag like this, you've got to be careful. Because you can start whacking the bag pretty hard, because this is gonna be ... You can start doing this drill going full bore. You can with the other drills, as well, but this is one where we're gonna start needing to go more at a normal, full swing in order to create the proper lag and downcock on the way down.

So here's what I want you to do. I want you to put this bag on its side, because I don't want you to get caught up in this strap, and I don't want you to hit the zipper on the bottom. This way, if you do catch it, it's not gonna hurt the bag. It's not gonna hurt you. So then, move the bag about three to three and a half feet away from where you would have the ball positioned. So I'm gonna be set up about three feet away at first. And you can start messing around with this as you get more comfortable.

But at first, give yourself some room. If you're the type of person that starts casting it coming down, you're gonna clip this bag every single time. So what I want you to start doing is moving the bag as you get more comfortable, closer in to where you have to maintain lag late into the downswing without clipping the bag. If you cast it at all, you push to the right side, you're always gonna be clipping the bag before you hit the ball. And that's the other reason I don't want you to have the strap sitting out here, or the zipper, because you can get the club end caught in the strap. That's not gonna feel very good.

So this way, it's just gonna hit the bag, and it's gonna give you auditory feedback. You're gonna feel it, but you're gonna start realizing that as you start shifting to bring the club down, while keep your hands more relaxed, that you'll start naturally clearing the bag. If you start trying to create speed early in the swing by pushing, and throwing, and all this stuff; you're always gonna clip the bag every single time.

As far as the path, the bag needs to be a little bit inside the target line of where the ball is. Because the club should be approaching the ball, of course, from the inside. If you're swinging way out over the top, you might still miss it. So you just need to be mindful of that. Hopefully you did the second drill, where we're coming more from the inside. And now it's just about learning how to maintain lag. The two key components of that I've talked about a ton in the lag videos. It's weight shift, keeping your hands soft and relaxed, and not ripping your shoulders through, not pushing from the right side. Those are lag killers. Pushing with the left thumb, pushing with the right wrist, pushing with the right shoulder. All of those things push the club away from you, which is the opposite of what you want when you want to create lag.

So if you're coming down from the top, relax, shift, my hands are chilled out and relaxed, I'm gonna clear the bag easily, get into an impact position. So with these three drills, you should be able to get into a great impact position, from an inside path, with tons of lag. If you put those three things together, we're gonna make a golfer out of you yet.

Hello, I am trying to figure out what the proper hand placement is at address, and how that eventually relates to the hand position at impact. I have observed on the various model swings on the site that they show at address the hands are almost lined up with the golfers groin (shaft vertical from the ball), and then at impact they are significantly forward of that point - creating shaft lean (on Chucks swing they are very far forward of the address position). So somewhere on the backswing the left hand must move from a cupped position to a bowed position, which is then held until impact. I have not seen on the site a description or recommendation on where the hands should be located at address. I have experimented putting them slightly forward of the ball, and this helps with preserving some shaft lean at impact. That being said, when I compare my swing on camera to others it looks like it is more common to have a vertical shaft vs forward leaning at address. Is it something you just get used to - address and impact are so different that it eventually doesn't matter where you start, or is there a good rule of thumb to follow?

Hello Drew. The club should be vertical at address with the lead hand on in inside of the lead thigh. Take a look at Golf Grip Checkpoint Tips, Using the Wrists in the Golf Swing and Should You Have Forward Press Video. Address and impact are two different animals. You start cupped at address and gradually lose that cupping to flat at the top. From there the flat wrist will work into a slightly bowed position at impact.

Hi Craig. That's correct. In his Killer Lag Drill video Chuck says ". I've given you two killer drills that are gonna help you get into a perfect impact position, and create the perfect path coming from the inside to get rid of that nasty over the top move.". It is these two videos that I have not been able to find.. Dave

Hi Chuck. I’ve been watching your videos diligently for years and have learned a tremendous amount about the golf swing even though I’ve been playing for 50 years! The vast majority of your teaching seems to be directed at over the top slicers. I’ve fought a leg slide with the club trapped behind me causing a vicious hook or two way miss for the past 5 or so years and it’s killind my game. I watched your video on this and it helped but even that seemed to be directed to “hip spinners” rather than knee sliders like me. If you could just add a little something about this in your teaching it would be very helpful. For example I just watched your latest video on lag with the impact bag which I intend to put in my practice routine but just a few seconds on incorporating those thoughts into a swing flawed by a lateral knee slide would really help. Thanks. Bob

Should we be able to hit full distance for the club when doing this drill?

Hello William. Yes. However, remember if you create too much lag you might struggle releasing the angle soon enough to take advantage of its benefits.

Hello I am watching Tiger Woods Oct 2017 swing video and I note that he uses his RIGHT hand at impact which appears to be a MARKED Effort to PURPOSEFULLY turn the RIGHT Hand over ( as well as the LEFT hand) I would appreciate your comment of Tiger Woods RIGHT hand at time of impact witih MUCH appreciation Tom Lawson

Hello Tom. Tiger added the trail hand some in the downswing to help with gathering more speed. Once you master the lead side the trail hand can be used to help generate mph. But, you must learn first how to control the club with your lead hand. Take a look at How Club Head Speed Affects Compression.

What club is Chuck using in this video. Is it a wedge? I tried using a 5 iron, and i hit the bag on the take away.

Hello Antonio. Looks to be around a 6 or 7 iron. Take a look at Thomas's post below. You may play a little with the setup to not hit the bag going back.

Bag position is tricky, since I don't want an early wrist cock on the backswing; it is easy to hit the bag on the backswing if I am trying for width. If I move the bag inside the target line and take the club straight back this seems to work. Ok?

What are the two Killer drills with the impact bag that refers to at the beginning of the "Impact Cube Lag Drill?" How do I find them with so many drills on the website?

Hello David. Two killers of lag would be lack of weight shift and pushing with the lead thumb. Take a look at the Frisbee Drill and the Downcock Pump Drill. The drills referred to in the beginning would be the How to Get Perfect Shaft Lean and Drill to Learn Inside Path to the Golf Ball (Previous 2 videos in this series).

Sorry for the confusion on my end, but if I put that bag just inside of the line how am I not going to hit it on the back swing? It seems that from the video he is swinging with the bag out in front. Thank you.

Hello Richard. At the very beginning, Chuck says about 3 - 3 1/2 feet away from the ball. And, the bag will be just inside the line of the ball. You can make some slight adjustments to make it work for you.

I haven't gotten the bag yet but it should be here today. I've watched the video a few times and I understood the 3 - 3 1/2 feet away and just inside the line suggestions, but I still can't wrap my head around it. If I move it 3 - 3 1/2 feet behind I won't hit it on the back swing, but how could I ever hit it on the down swing even if I go over the top and cast it out? Am I confusing inside the line with outside the line?

Craig (Certified RST Instructor)
Hello Richard. When you cast the club and start losing the angle the club will lengthen too soon on the downswing. A wide downswing will give a much greater chance to hit the bag, than narrow. When your bag arrives. Let me know if the positions we talked about above don't work and will be happy to help you make adjustments. I don't believe you are confusing the lines.
