Fix Your Blocked Shots | Two Missing Pieces to Forward Shaft Lean

If you’re looking to compress the ball like the pros, then you’ll need an impact position with forward shaft lean.

Do it incorrectly, though, and you’ll hit some frustrating blocks and might even start shanking the ball.  (Ugh!  I cringe just mentioning that word!)

Let’s avoid all that mess.  So check out the video below for the first piece of the puzzle.

Blocking the Ball with Forward Shaft Lean

You see all the pros hitting great shots by compressing the ball with forward shaft lean.

And you really need this forward shaft lean to hit solid, penetrating golf shots.  It’ll also help eliminate topping the ball, skulling it, and other bad shots.

But when you’re concentrating on striking the ball with forward shaft lean, it’s easy to stray off path and start blocking the ball.

That’s what I’m here to address.

The pic below shows me demonstrating a short, quarter swing with a block.  And there are 2 possible causes of this.

You Must Release Your Club

I see a lot of my students holding off the release too long, attempting to get more lag in the golf swing.

As the Lag Doctor, nothing gets me more excited than more lag, but trying to hold on too long by not releasing the club is one of the main causes of blocking.

So if you’re blocking the ball, take a moment to make sure that you’re releasing your club.

If you release the club late, you’ll have trouble squaring up the club face.

In addition to releasing the club, there’s another movement to help you fix your blocked shots.

It involves rotating your club face, and once you nail that part, you’ll come into impact in a way that uses all of your built up lag.
