The Key to a Consistent Putting Stroke

One of the main keys to consistency in putting is having a very simple stroke, which allows you to maintain your composure under pressure. Whether you're facing a three-footer to win a friendly wager with your buddies or playing in a more competitive setting, the fundamentals of your putting technique can make all the difference. A simple stroke is less likely to break down when it matters most.

Understanding the Movement

A frequently shared piece of advice in putting is to 'rock your shoulders.' While this advice is well-intentioned, it can be misleading. The term 'rocking your shoulders' can be interpreted in various ways, which can lead to confusion in your technique.

Redefining Shoulder Movement

Instead of focusing solely on rocking your shoulders, consider what parts of your body you should move during a putting stroke. If you were to simply rock your shoulders, depending on your posture and how much you hinge at your hips, you might inadvertently bend your spine. This movement doesn't contribute to the efficient stroke we aim for.

Focus on Your Shoulder Blades

When executing your putting stroke, the key is to think about moving your shoulder blades. These bony parts at the back of your body should glide across your torso. Imagine your right shoulder blade moving inward, followed by your left shoulder blade doing the same. This technique encourages the rotation of your rib cage rather than just tilting your shoulders.

Creating a Simple Putting Stroke

The result of this shoulder blade movement is a more efficient and straightforward putting stroke. Instead of a tilting motion that complicates the stroke, focus on rotating your rib cage. With your arms and hands remaining passive, you can create a clean path for your putter.

To visualize this, as you prepare for your putt, pull your right shoulder blade back towards your spine. As you finish your stroke, pull your left shoulder blade back in the same manner. This shoulder blade movement will help you achieve a simple, repeatable putting stroke.

Proper Grip is Essential

While shoulder blade movement is crucial for a consistent putting stroke, it’s equally important to have the right grip. A proper grip sets the foundation for an effective stroke, allowing the shoulder blades to do their work without unnecessary interference from the arms or hands. If you're unsure about your putting grip, I encourage you to check out the linked video that demonstrates how to achieve the perfect grip for your putting stroke.
