Understanding the Stackable Nature of Golf Drills

Hi, I'm Chuck Quinton, founder of RotarySwing.com. One of the most important concepts of my swing methodology is the progressive and stackable nature of it. I can't emphasize enough how critical this is when you're going through drills and working through the RotarySwing Dynamic (RSD) five-step program. Each drill serves two key benefits:

  1. They can all be done indoors without ever hitting a ball.
  2. Every drill is designed to be stackable, allowing you to build on your skills progressively.

The Value of Indoor Practice

The ability to practice indoors is invaluable. You can make ten times greater strides in front of a mirror than you ever will by taking lessons and hitting balls. This is because learning a new movement pattern requires quality repetitions, which you can get in a controlled environment. Think of it like this: how your brain learns new movements is critical for your success as a golfer. By doing drills in front of a mirror, you can achieve more in less time, with less strain on your body, and at a lower cost.

Stacking Drills for Better Learning

Each drill in the RSD program is meant to be stackable. The foundation of your practice should be understanding how your brain learns. After you've established that, you can start stacking on different components, such as weight shift, core rotation, the left arm, the golf club, and the right arm. This is the essence of the five-step program.

Imagine you’re out hitting balls and everything is going well, but then you start to lose your rhythm. In that case, you can simply pop off the last piece you added to your swing. For instance, if you’re using both arms and things start to fall apart, you can remove your right arm from the club and focus on drills that isolate your left arm. This way, you can maintain the necessary lag and leverage to achieve clubhead speed without compromising your technique.

Focus on Movement Patterns

The goal isn't just to hit balls; it’s about learning proper movement patterns. Until your body can execute these movements correctly, hitting balls won’t be beneficial. In fact, it may even hinder your progress. By taking the time to work on basic core body movements using the stackable nature of the RSD program, you set yourself up for success when it comes time to hit balls.

Combining Drills for Effective Practice

As you work through the sequence of drills, remember that you can combine any drill together. For example, if you're focusing on your takeaway, you can also work on weight shift, posting up at impact, and releasing the club. Maybe you can integrate the takeaway with the weight shift, creating a comprehensive practice rep. It’s essential to understand your current skill level and build upon it. If your takeaway is solid, there's no need to dwell on it; instead, progress to the next component of your swing.

The Efficiency of Quality Repetitions

Doing drills indoors allows you to accumulate quality repetitions much more efficiently than hitting balls at a range. Imagine doing 250 perfect reps in the time it takes to hit 50-60 balls, of which only a handful may be executed correctly. This is where the RSD methodology shines. It’s designed to make the learning process more efficient and faster, allowing you to progress through the stackable drills and eventually work toward full-speed shots.

Conclusion

By following the stackable drill approach, you can expedite your progress as a golfer. Start learning these drills indoors and combine them to develop a more comprehensive understanding of your swing. This structured practice will ultimately lead to better performance on the course.
