Understanding the Release in Your Golf Swing

Hey golfers, Chuck Quinton here, and today we're diving into a crucial aspect of your golf swing: the release. Many players struggle with getting maximum club head speed while exerting minimal effort. The secret lies in understanding how to effectively release the club head at the ball.

The Concept of Release

First, let's clarify what we mean by releasing the club. To release something means to let go. In the context of golf, it means to allow the club head to move freely towards the ball without forcing it. This concept is vital to achieve maximum club head speed efficiently.

Common Mistakes in the Golf Swing

One of the biggest mistakes that golfers make is driving their body from the trailing side through the impact area. This tendency is particularly common among right-handed golfers, as they subconsciously rely on their dominant side. However, this approach can lead to poor body mechanics and reduced power.

When golfers push from their dominant side, it often results in an open shoulder position, causing the trailing arm to bend and the forefinger on the trailing hand to lean against the shaft. These positions indicate that the player is pushing the club rather than releasing it, which ultimately slows down their swing.

How to Properly Release the Club Head

To achieve maximum speed in your swing, you need to counteract the common push motion. Instead, you should be moving from your lead side. This means your shoulders can remain closed at impact, allowing you to effectively throw the club head at the ball.

As you come down in your swing, focus on straightening your lead leg and opening your hips slightly. From this position, your job is to throw the club head at the ball. It's important to understand that your body doesn’t need to move aggressively or quickly for the club head to achieve speed. By throwing the club head, you activate the stored energy in your swing without the need for excessive body movement.

Visualizing the Release

Think of the club shaft as a flexible string. If you were to keep turning your chest through the target as some commentators suggest, the string would never straighten out and release properly. Instead, you want to stop turning at a certain point, allowing the levers in your arms and wrists to release. This release allows the club to reach maximum speed as you throw it at the ball.
