Flipping the club vs. striking the ball with forward shaft lean can dramatically affect loft at impact. In this video, find out how your club's effective loft at impact affects compression. Also, learn why, and by how much, PGA Tour pros lean their club shafts at impact for penetrating shots!

  1. Less loft at impact decreases spin loft and increases compression
  2. Around 2-3 degrees forward shaft lean with driver is ideal
  3. 10 degrees for shaft lean is ideal with short irons

I am taking medicine for pain in my left hand around the thumb area and think it is coming from pressing on the shaft with the left thumb. How do I make the thumb less active or is there a way to take the thumb off the shaft?

Hello Robert. You can take the lead thumb off the shaft (Frisbee Drill). But, other than training yourself not to push. There really isn't a quick fix to stop lead thumb pushing other than awareness you need to keep it soft.

Then, the release of the forward lag occurs after mid left thigh? Also, while a golfer is trying to achieve the forward shaft lean, the rotation of the hands occurs when through the follow through?

Yes, until you start passing the mid lead thigh. When you are trying to achieve extra shaft lean the wrist rotation will be somewhat delayed until follow through. Ideally, working to a point of maintaining some lean with rotation.
