Step 1 - Weight shift drills


Weight Shift Video Golf Drill -

Now that you've watched our RotarySwing Weight Shift golf lesson, we're going to give you specific drills that wiill force you to learn proper weight shift.  The goal is to start by not hitting golf balls, but you should be able to work up to that within 50 to 100 repetitions. 

Kep in mind, this weight shift drill is designed so that you can add in other RST components as you progress, but for now, let's focus on the basics of achieiving weight shift.

Am I correct that when I begin to shift to the right it actually begins to move the club and the proper Takeaway position and then I finish as I continue to pull my shoulder blade back? I have been struggling with shoulder blade glide going to inside and low but I was not shifting my way when I started to shift my way I realized it seem to be taking the club in the right direction without me doing anything else I just want to be sure this is correct

I seem to pound the ground on occasion. I cant really see my head dropping and do t have much body drop....could it be my shoulder or not doing a wide sweeping turn?

Hello Fred. Make sure you are shifting enough weight and that you have enough lag angle. Most of the time the trail arm/hand starts to push early causing a loss of lag and steeper swing plane leading to the chunk.

Question about clubs. I tried to learn 15 years ago with little success. I am picking it back up this fall and was wondering...my clubs are now close to 20 year old but they are Ping G2s that were fit to me. Would you suggest keeping them they are in perfect shape or upgrading to more modern clubs.

Hello Fred. You should be fine with those clubs as long as the length are correct. The more the swing starts to get into the proper position. You may revisit the club situation.

Hello Blake. Soreness is normal when activating muscles you aren't used to using. But, the movement shouldn't feel like you are power lifting and getting fatigued quickly.

Hello CJ. The goal is to shift weight. If you can shift weight pretty efficiently (walk and chew gum at the same time and still transfer), then no worries stacking Step 2 - Core Rotation on the move.

1st day. 250 reps. I assume I will experience some working of muscles that I am not used to. Is it normal to feel some muscle fatigue and tightness in my back just above my left hip. Also as I progress to other drills this will be the case? I also assume my body will get conditioned to these new movements?

Hello CJ. Muscles should be sore because you are using/firing them in a manner that they are not used to working. If it starts getting your back and above the hip. Make sure you are pulling the weight correctly. Preventing Hip Pain and Which Muscles to Use in Golf Swing Transition Videos.

Hi there, I want to get straight in to registering reps to get the ball rolling - to my understanding, so long as I am happy with the set up, I need to begin with the videos named "drill only". So copy the drill and log the reps. The issue I have for example in the weight shift drill only video. There are many levels of progression within, so am I to log a rep when I perform the basic level of the movement (wide weight shift without turn) or only log a rep when it is the advanced level of the rep (light heels, normal stance width with rotation)?

Hello Brendan. Yes, you can start to log the bigger reps or progression. Once, you start moving correctly and don't need the early steps you start weening out the easier beginning reps and put more focus on the advanced moves.

This is a really interesting drill for me. It's showing just how trail hand (my right hand) dominant I've always been while not knowing it. Simply getting through 50 reps with my left hand leaves my hand tired and sore. I can do this all day long with my right hand. This is going to take me awhile to get to the 1K minimum.

Dave Last winter I completed the five step system and it has made a huge difference. Recently I've started hitting fat shots again and it's driving me nuts. I saw in one of your notes that step one would fix fat shots. What causes fat shots and what else can I do.

HI been using the weight shift drills to really start using the underbody. Fantastic feeling. Now I have noticed that there are two ways of shifting weight from right ankle to left ankle. When starting the backswing I load up and pressure builds into the right glute and heel. I can then shift pressure laterally with shifting pelvis over the heels to the left, but also push on my right glute to really increase the power and speed to the left. Is it the case that when wanting to add more power you in essence are pushing the right glute down to move your whole weight to the left?

Hello Gregory. Pushing some with the trail side can add more power. However, I would prefer you to focus on your first diagnosis of shifting the weight. The push from the trail side will lead to other swing faults. That has to be walked through carefully.

When doing the lead arm only drill, I notice that I am feeling pressure on my lead thumb in the downcock. Should I feel nothing in the lead thumb and only the last 3 fingers of the lead hand? Just asking because I'm worried this may be a protagonist to throwing away lag.

Hello Darryl. You will feel some support from the lead thumb. But, you have to shy away from excess tension and push. Pressure in the last three fingers and very minimal in the thumb is the goal.

This might be a strange question! I am practicing the weight shift drill and use this song, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaIzl1Tz-so , to keep the tempo that fits me. I can start with the smallest movement , just shift it from right to left foot and then gradually make the movement larger all the way up to a full swing always in that same tempo! For me the beauty is that in keeping the same tempo the club can make very small movement all the way up to a total swing. Is it wrong to practice this way? Thanks for helping!

Hello Gwan. If you already shift the weight well, or have good pre-existing movement patterns you won't need a ton. But, typically 100 minimum to create a new movement pathway (in a practice session), 1000 to get proficient, and 3000-5000 to master. If after 1000 you are shifting weight well and without thought. You may proceed to Step 2.

Hi RJ - Jim Darcey here - working on the drill with set up and weight shift and continuing to wake up that left glute. Question: Between weather and work schedule, have not really swung a club much at all, and wondered what you recommend as far as going to the range - should I be just doing short swings and focusing on the moves I am learning? I kind of want to just go out and play 9 holes and try to focus on what I have learned so far with the whole spectrum of clubs (plus enjoy the nice outdoor space), and/or work the full bag a bit on the range, but thought I would check to see if you had any advice in that respect. Since I haven't played golf with any regularity, would likely be somewhat rusty, but kind of want to "take a test drive". Also, looking ahead a bit, would the next video I submit be the set up and weight shift routine, or so I get further in to more movements before submitting again? If you're going to go play, just go play and don't think. Your hard work over time will eventually integrate its way into your normal game, but if you go out there and try to think about what you're doing on the course, it will likely be bad news bears and you'll get frustrated with the program. practice time and play time are like business and pleasure, we want to keep them separate.

Have a question about weight shift at the top of backswing i'm having trouble when i am over the ball to bump my hip first before starting the down swing don't seem to have a problem when no ball present so I'm able to bump my hips at the same time when i do have a ball present is this a concern?

Really focusing on the pull from left, glute use, inside ankle, neutral position with knee over ankle, etc. Wondered one thing: Is purpose of the one inch shift to right just a prep for the eventual introduction of the turn for the back swing? The shift to the right side is the first step in loading the right glute in the backswing. Seeing how the first move that we want to make in the downswing is to shift to the left, even before we finish at the top of the backswing, then the first thing we must do in the backswing would be shift to the right. the sequence of the backswing tends to be the sequence of the downswing, too. If you have early wrist set in your backswing and the wrists are the first thing you load in the backswing, chances are, that will be the first thing to unload in the downswing, causing us to cast our potential for speed out behind us instead of down at the ball.

Hi RJ - Very helpful. I am enjoying waking up the glutes. I hadn't tweaked on focusing on the right glute in that take back, but more on pulling with the left glute on the shift back to the left. Hi RJ or anyone - I am beginning to work on the weight shift drills. There is the one moving from one foot to the other and and the one that combines set up and weight shift. That one is one Chuck recommends the 1000 reps over a month's time. I only have so much time to put in to the program, so want to maximize the results. Stick with the combo set up and weight shift for now? And, related to that, would you recommend not beginning any succeeding drills until I have done that one for the full month? Seems like if I keep watching videos I will build up quite a few other drills that are introduced, but would not be right to start until the foundation was fully there. I don't want to spread myself out too thin and water down the results by not building the foundation properly. Any guidance would be appreciated. Best, Jim

I would definitely get the 1000 first because after 1000, typically by doing 100 per day, you're going to be able to do the drills without thinking about them. So when you can get to the point where you can do the drill correctly while having a conversation with someone, then you're adept enough with the move to start stacking on more. It's better to be the master at one part of the swing than to know a little bit about every part. If you need tips on how to sneak reps into your daily routine, let me know.

When I used to smoke, I don't any more, but when I did, I used to take a 7 iron out with me and do about 20-30 reps each time I went out so, I usually ended up doing approximately 150 reps-160 reps per day without spending any extra time that I needed to set aside. Another thing you can do is whenever you're going to the bathroom, I would look in the mirror and do some reps after I used the restroom and washed my hands or before I got into the shower. That would help with reps as well. I had a full length mirror on the door. Also, believe it or not, mental repetitions are almost as good as physical ones. Because we're actually trying to train the brain, not necessarily the muscles themselves as they don't actually remember anything. This is more tricky, but if you can imagine your drills from the view point of yourself and imagine yourself doing them properly before you go to bed, this can actually help reinforce your new movement patterns. I used to use it as a way to help myself fall asleep when I had insomnia problems. I would think of my favorite golf course and imagine myself playing a round of golf, one shot at a time with practice swings of whatever drill I was working on and imagined myself having a picture perfect rotary swing. I never made it to the back 9. It was good for taking my mind off the anxiety of not being able to fall asleep and it helped my golf game in many ways. So you don't necessarily have to bust out all 100 reps at once, just find time in your schedule where you might be waiting on something where you could be bustin' out some moves. If you cook in your household, you can get a lot of reps in while waiting for water to boil.

Hi RJ - The one you are recommending to focus on is the one that involves set up and weight shift combined, right? Not the one that involves "jumping" from foot to foot. Assuming so, I assume no harm in continuing to soak up further videos and watching them somewhat repetitively as time allows. Hi Paul, glad you enjoyed the review. Use the video called the necktie drill in conjunction with the shift/push of the heel to learn how to maintain the tilt. You may not even need to use that video if you turn properly after you shift. Drill the stuff we talked about first and then compare it to the model. If you are more upright, search necktie drill on the site. Hope that helps

Hello Edward. A proper shift from trail to lead. The above drill has you go through sequences of stepping. Big, or little count as a rep. The fact that you get comfortable moving from trail to lead is the goal. Not staying stagnant. You will clean up the finer pieces with the body in Step 2.

Do I need to worry about how far my right shoulder is going back? I’ve always had an arms swing and have long arms. Done enough reps now and read enough that the mind instantly thinks better posture, weight over ankles. Just wondering if I should be doing a fuller shoulder rotation.

Hi Craig, I’m not sure I understand the differences between the “Weight Shift - Drill Only”, “Weight Shift Sweep Drills”, and the “Weight Shift Tempo Drill”. I want to make sure that I’m recording reps correctly, so it would be helpful to understand the differences; or more specifically which reps count for which. Also, on I’m noticing that I find myself thinking about my lead arm when doing these drills, but I haven’t gotten to that section of the training yet. Should I be focused on the lead arm at all right now? I find myself worrying that I’m building bad habits with the lead arm, and next thing I know I’ve done several reps without really focusing on weight shift. Any advice/clarification is appreciated.

Hello Alexander. The goal for weight shift is to solely start getting comfortable moving weight. Once you get to Step 2 you will start buttoning up the move. The Sweep Drills and Step 1 are very similar. Perfectly fine to record your reps working on those drills. For right now, just allow the lead arm to stay relaxed and react to your body movements. Odds are you aren't doing anything detrimental with it that you will have to undo in the future.

At the driving range, I have found that I hit my 7 iron straighter, farther, and more consistently using my left arm only, than I do 2-handed. (btw, I am right handed.) Hello Charles. Sure. Until the lead arm gets mastered you don't have to add the trail. The trail in the end will help with speed, but only if it doesn't overtake the lead arm motion. Which should be your primary goal of ingraining right now.

I am confused as how to progress through the 5 step system, or if I am supposed to use the RST videos etc. For example, it says 3-5k reps to master a move. At 100ish reps a day, that is about a full month for one move. That’s 5 months total of you progress sequentially, and that’s not even including the basic setup and axis title videos which are each another 3-5k of reps. That seems like an awful long time. I assume I am misunderstanding something about how to chain the moves together because one at a time seems like it would take a looooong time to completely. I’m all for getting the reps in but want to make sure I am following this program correctly so I don’t waste my training time. Thanks for the help. I know I asked a similar question in forum a few days back so sorry for being repetitive.

Hello Christopher. Stack as many moves as you can while doing them properly. Here's my suggestion. Do the full proper setup with axis tilt at least 1k times correctly. As you work on other moves you have to have proper setup which will let you to continue ingraining the correct position. From there you can use the 5 Step System to start overhauling the swing. Once, you get proficient at a move. Say Step 2. You can stack Step 3 into it if you can maintain correct movements. If not, then go back and rep further until you can without thought. It takes about a 1k to start being proficient and 3k-5k to master. You just have to be disciplined enough to know what parts need more time a proper repping before stacking.

I have a question regarding the difference between the RST Drill and RST 5 Step Drills. Should I focus on one set rather than the other if I'm just starting out. I see they all appear on the Rep Tracker (Great tool by the way). I have 950 reps for the setup and wanted to start to incorporate the weight shift while I continue to work towards the 3000 reps. Second question when would I look to work through the Full Swing Course via Rotary Swing University? Do I approach that after completing all videos and drills from the dashboard. Hello Jon. The RST 5 Step System is a quick start too a great swing. Some players don't want all the nuts and bolts. The 5 Step breaks the swing down into very simple parts/motion for a great overall swing. If you want all the nuts and bolts with a complete rebuild. Go ahead a start the University with your setup work and rebuild piece by piece.

Craig, thanks for the response. With regards to the University at the end of each chapter I'm suppose to submit a swing for review to determine if I pass. Is this done with a club striking a ball? I know the club is not added until later in the course. Thanks again for your assistance.

Hello JonDerek. Ideally, with a club to make sure you have completed, or transferred said move to the swing. However, some players use the review as a checkpoint to make sure their drill is being done 100% correctly which is fine as well. This to ensure they aren't ingraining an improper drill.

Hello David. Proper shifting of the weight to the trail side will cause a very slight amount loss in tilt. Sounds like you are breaking the trail hip line though. Take a look at the Weight Shift Video Part 2 and maintain your hip.

Hi Frederic, whatever leads to success is fine. Just make sure you get the feedback from a mirror and / or video while doing the reps to know that you're on track. From face on, you want to see your trail hip in contact with the "hip line" - watch the video "right hip line". From the down the line perspective, want to make sure your trail knee stays flexed and does not straighten. Thanks

Hello Mark. The goal is a minimum of 100 per session and 3000-5000 to master. You may start counting with the basic drill, but really start honing in once you can get it without to much foot movement.

just started program a few days and a loving it!! I have 500 reps in on this video and 100 on rotation and already noticing difference-wow. I notice a lot throughout the site you mention left side and right side dominance and to learn how to use the left arm more and think about "pulling the truck" instead of pushing. a lot of your advice is more geared for right handed players. My situation is that I am left handed person who play golf right handed (right handed clubs). I write, bowl, throw balls etc. with my left hand but have always golfed and baseball swing with my right side (don't know why, just seemed more sense to pull with dominant side i suppose). it seems like really want to pull hard with my left side by nature as that is were my power is (in my mind). Anyway i notice i can do the left hand only swing/weight shift drill like a champ and it comes very easy to me and i have been adding a bit of posting drills with it-i feel i could easily hit balls with only my left had. do you have any advice for a left side dominant person who plays right handed? i am 53, 20 handicap, and used to slice all my life by coming over the top. thanks.

Hello William. In your instance, the key would be to master the body movements first. And, then let one of our instructors figure out how lead side dominant you are. If you tend to come over the top, or lose lag in the downswing. You still need to some lead side dominance training. You can get to pulling too much. When that happens we have plenty of videos to help correct the issue.

Thanks Craig for replying to both of my posts. Regarding my other post I will send a video of the "left hand" tempo drill and rotation drill I am working on. If I have enough video time (30 seconds max, I know) should I send a full swing example? Thanks for all your support! Lastly, in the rotation drill, you show that it ends with hips slightly open and shoulders square. how much weight should be transferred to the left side at this point? when I end the move and check my position, I still feel some pressure in my left quads and am focusing on getting my weight back more on my heel to activate the gluts (?). I tend sometimes to over extend the drill into more of a "post" or stacked feel -so I am trying to end the drill in the same position as you show in the video. what percentage of weight transfer should I have? do you want the right foot down, or slightly rolling in? Hello William. If you have the time availability adding a full example perfectly fine. At least 80% should be transferred at that point (impact). The whole leg will be helping with stability. But, the glutes should be the primary focus point. If you start getting a lot of quad pressure. Make sure your weight isn't more towards the ball of the foot, or on your toes. The right foot should always be rolled in at impact. I'm a little confused about the ending drill weight question. At impact 80% lead side. Into the follow thru 90%. And, fully once the swing is completed.

I have a hard time doing this drill without pushing from the leg that is left on the ground. As I see it I have two options: pushing with the back leg och moving the cog by "throwing" the lead leg. I cannot practice pulling with the lead leg because it is up in the air. What should I do and what proper movement am I ingraining with this drill?

Hello Magnus. For this drill, I definitely don't want you training a ton of push. However, this drill is merely for getting the feel of weight transfer. If you are moving from right to left and getting comfortable with the notion of shifting weight. You are doing fine. You should be able to feel just a type of rocking back and forth (Weight Shift Sweep Drills). Once, you stabilize moving the feet. You will gain more awareness of the pull (Preventing Hip Pain Drill).

Little by little, went to the range for the first time since starting and worked of weight shift. All went well for most and am happy with progress and know I am in this for the long haul. I have to play tomorrow so I did hot a few 7 irons 9-3 drill and that also went good, Hit a few full shots and was to worried about the ball but rather the weight shift and shoulder turn etc. I was hitting the 7 iron 20 yards farther than I ever have with no effort at all and never felt the ball when I hit it. I am so excited to continue the journey of building a new swing

Hello Andrew. Your wrist isn't setting? Take out the tension for right now. Don't worry so much about perfect placement. More that you are shifting weight from trail to lead side letting the club swing and wrist be soft. However, I would check to make sure your lead hand grip isn't too strong. Continued with my weight shift drills, but needed to go to range. Golf league starts this week and I must attend. I am fully aware that it is not the best to play during the 5 step drills. But .... I need to. But something interesting happened at the range. My previous instructor was at the range and he made a visit and advised on what I was doing. He commented on that my lead arm is too dominate. In my head, I was said excellent! the RST Drills are working. He also stated my hips are shifting too much....or my lower half is noisy. Which could be true, but for me I was happy to hear cuz I used to be all arms....but for me this indicates I'm doing the weight shift..... funny he did not pick up that I am different from last season. But the things I realized at the range: With my swing, i am ending up on my toes. Even when i try to post up. (I watch the videos, but I will start the rotation drills after completion of 3000 reps of weight shift, unless you think it acceptable to stack the rotation with shift at this stage) And I am not releasing the club or in other words the club face remains open at impact. I watched the video on the towel snap and that has good results when I am really concentrating that. So....is there something you can tell me i can be mindful when I am playing for these items. I know this stuff will correct this stuff, as I progress in the RST drills. Thanks....I know there is a lot.

Hello Michael. If you are shifting the weight with relative ease these days. Feel free to stack Step 2. It will continue to reinforce weight shift and button down the lower half without getting on the toes. Step 2 will also help you release the club (snap the towel) because positing up will help you slam on the brakes and allow the club to release. The main thing for playing is just be mindful you are changing you swing. Stay focused on achieving at least one of your goals no matter what happens with ball contact/shot result. Glad to hear the swing is changing!

Performed 550 reps, during the reps, I am paying attention to what muscle are being used and what are not. With the wide stance weight shifting and even with the smaller stance, it remind me of ice skating, but instead of a fwd CG...more out on the toes, I should be more back sitting and a force pressing on my heals with weight on the inside. I should not be rolling out of my shoes . Am I understanding this properly.

Thank you. I do feel in it my glutes, but I feel it in my I.T. bands (i think that's what they are called) running down from top of my glute/hip to the outside of my knee with most of the tension being at the outside of my knee.... Does that seem correct or is this indicating I am doing something wrong. Also; it is not uncomfortable, just that I can tell I am working them. I am not in the best of shape, I sit at a desk 60+ hours a week. Again thank you for your time.

Hello Jason. Ideally, the lead heel should stay on the ground. It is okay to lift while training to help feel weight transfer (Weight Shift Sweep Drills). If you are experiencing strain. Something must be a miss. Try allowing for a little more hip turn on the backswing and make sure you have axis tilt. If you can upload a swing for review. Let one of our instructors take a look at the issue.

The weather has been so poor here it's been difficult to get outside for any length of time. You're welcome Anthony. FYI: You can upload a model swing for comparison anytime when using the swing analyzer tool. The models are on the right hand side of the screen. Let's stick to body movements first. When we are ready to add the club, it will be necessary to keep your right hand off the club. In the meantime, yes, you can work on weight shift indoors. I recommend starting with "5 minute set up with weight shift". Learn to shift weight into the right leg as your first move. When that is mastered, move up to the drill in the "core rotation" video in the 5 step program.

Confused again! I want to start working on Weight Shift, stacking it on the Setup work that I've completed. This video, No. 9 in this series, is the Sweep Drill and is the one that has the Rep Tracker. Video 14 (5 Minute Golf Setup w/ Weight Shift) has the 50 reps per day requirement and the old pdf tracker. These two videos are significantly different. From reading the comments below, it seems as if one is for a new process, and the other was for the old process. 1. Which drill will produce the best results? 2. Should I do both in any particular order?

Hello Barry. They are both adequate processes to have a great swing. One is geared to more of a quick start guide versus overall rebuild. I would use Step 1 to get the feel of moving weight. If you are good at moving the weight. Then, use Step 2 and Perfecting Lower Body Stability to hone it in. If you struggle with the weight move especially from setup. Use the 5 Setup/Weight. My overall suggestion would be a swing review. Let us tell you exactly the drills you need to be working on right now because I know it can be confusing at times.

I have been working on this drill for three weeks, about 1500 reps. i am noticing my hands are moving away from me causing me to hit the ball on the heel and sometimes shanking the ball. This is probably true Craig as I don't use much hinge cock in my swing and rely only on my strong legs and core muscles to generate speed.I`m not a short hitter now with a 100mph driver speed. I'm working through the 3000 reps. When I've been playing I've also deliberately focused on getting a full weight shift onto my trail foot as early as possible in my backswing (and keeping it there) and onto my lead foot as early as possible on my downswing (and keeping it there). Is there any way to know when the benefit of the first step has kicked in? I don't mind doing the reps, but I'd like to know what changes I should be seeing or feeling when I play. Are there any signs I should look for to make sure that what I do on the course isn't destroying the benefit of the drills?

Hello Ross. The benefit you should see is a little more power and fluid motion. Using the legs and momentum to help swing the club freely and with less effort. More than likely you will need to check a camera to see if the course is matching the practice work.

I've started the RST program and am working through the Weight Shift module now. I see some improvement in my iron shots. This is my question: I've struggled for a long time now following through on shots especially when I play a round. I tend to punch at the ball or not have a complete, fluid swing. ok, so Im just wondering how to go about this. I've done 100 reps, and I see 3000 is the ultimate goal. Should I just do 100 every day? Can I continue to do them without hitting balls, or should I only focus on hitting balls with the drill once Ive started to feel comfortable? I have the ability to hit foam balls indoors, but I'd rather not drive all the way to the golf course to hit real balls with one arm. It might be too tempting to take full swings

Regarding reps, what are the pros and cons of doing the reps over a shorter or longer period of time. Does the myelination process depend only on number of repetitions or is there also an elapsed time element?

Hello James. It depends on the difference in elapsed time. The main goal when training is a minimum of 100 perfect repetitions. Doing less doesn't provide enough for the brain to start thinking to itself "hmm, maybe this is how he or she wants me to do this from now on." 100 perfect reps per training session and 3000-5000 to make it permanent.

Where does the progression end here? Weight shift with steps then weight shift without steps then weight shift with club in one hand then weight shift with club in both hands then ... do we go to full swings at full speed? What stage do we need before moving on to the second video?

Hello Ross. You were pretty spot on with your progression. You may add some weight shift steps with a club if you need it for feel. But, I didn't have any issue with the game plan. You don't need to go max speed, but up to a point that would be stock speed for your full swing. Once, you have completed around 3000-5000 you should be pretty efficient at shifting you weight and to start buttoning things up with Step 2.

Like the site and philosophy. Just getting started and had a question. In these reps I am really focusing on weight shift. I haven't watched ahead to the other steps. In repeating movements focused on weight shift, its it possible I'm engraining other bad habits not related to weight shift? If so, is it expected that future reps will undo any damage there and stack on top of the good weight shift?

Hello Phillip. I don't think you would be ingraining something poor. The whole purpose of the above video is to start getting comfortable with weight movement. If you are achieving that goal. All is well. The follow up steps will start to button up all the pieces into a sound swing.

I am a high school golfer who is already a 3 handicap. Despite this, I have a very long backswing, using my shoulder and hands a lot and coming over the top (which I figure Chuck would say is because I have a lot of tension in my wrists/arms/shoulders in the backswing.) I am a pretty good ball-striker who hits about 12 greens per round. Despite this, I rarely hit a draw, or straight ball, and my ball flight is high because I lose lag into a scooped impact position. I have just become a member so that I can work on my swing for the next 6 months before my season starts. I have looked at my swing in slow motion and know that while there are serious flaws, but I think I shift my weight well and get a (slight more than) full shoulder turn. How should I proceed with this training program? And how should I approach these first two steps in the 5 step system?

Hello Harry. Ideally, if you have 6 months to retool I would send in a swing review. Let one of our instructors, or myself tailor a game plan for you over the off season. Therefore, you hit the high points and most pertinent area of need. If you don't have a camera or smart phone device capable. It sounds like you need to button up the top (5 Minutes to the Perfect Backswing) and then start working on Step 2 to tighten up how you shift and post (without shoulder spinning - main cause of OTT).

In the setup drill, Chuck was very specific about what constituted a "Rep". That is 5 times with the eyes open and five with the eyes closed in each part of the setup and repeating all of those parts twice, is one rep. With the weight shift drill and others, what constitutes a repetition?

Hi James, when you stack in a new piece like this and you go into a proper setup position, then shift the weight properly, that would constitute as one completed rep. Same for when you stack in any new pieces moving forward. Just make sure you keep the quality of the movements in check when stacking in a new piece.

Hi. I just started the program this week. I've learned more about the golf swing in one week then I have in years. I'm currently playing to about a 20 hcp and have the goal of getting into the single digits. I'm really going to commit to this training program and want to be one of the success stories! So, I understand and fully appreciate the importance of going through the drills one at a time before proceeding, but is there any harm in looking ahead and starting to incorporate some of the moves like the backswing? Hello Scott. Love the enthusiasm. You amy incorporate some backswing. However, don't overload yourself. Training the new movement patterns is very taxing on the brain. You don't want your "computer" losing focus on the goal. It is very easy to get side tracked when stacking to many components at once.

Regarding the rep tracker: In my dashboard, when I click on the video "Step 1- Weight Shift - Drill Only", I can add my rep count for the drill online. Additionally, there is the PDF rep tracking sheet for "5 Minute Setup Plus Weight Shift" which correlates with a DIFFERENT weight shift video and drill entirely. I am trying to reconcile the functionality of having an online rep tracker for one drill, and a PDF rep tracker for a different drill- both drills are proposed as IMPORTANT, so why wouldn't the tracking for both be available online and in the same column of "my dashboard"? We all know these drills can be boring, but why not streamline the rep tracking into one place? I have one place (online) to track one drill, and another place (the PDF) to track another drill for the SAME RST STEP! Can I just ignore one of these drills? If so, which one is more "important", the PDF drill or the "rep tracker" drill? For me, it's an added frustration- my apologies for the rant, I'm going to do both drills but it is cumbersome and confusing to try and track them in different venues. - Chris

I am 1800 reps into this. I just got my swing review back from Chris. I was doing the weight shift drill for the review. Chris told me that I was not getting enough of a backswing body turn during the drills and that I needed to focus on that until my next swing review. I thought the primary purpose of this drill was to shift weight but now I can clearly see that chuck is getting a good body turn in this video. Should I try to get a good turn for the last 1000 since we technically have not yet learned about rotation in this step or should I start over at zero and don't count them until I'm getting weight shifted and body turned? Chris mentioned that I was pushing my club back from the lead side but with only the lead arm on the club, isn't that kind-of inevitable? Should I do this drill and somehow not let my arm go across my body?

Hi Rob, Weight shift and body rotation are the 2 main components of a good backswing. The arms will be just slightly elevating, flexion of the trail arm and some wrist rotation. Now since you were working on weight shift and it looked like it was in place, then I added in the part of you creating a good turn with it. You can continue on with just reps of weight shift or you can start over counting weight shift and body turn together. Whatever you are most comfortable with.

I am 50 and have only been playing golf for 3 years, I have had RST for a couple of years but only been browsing videos. I got sick of continuos frustration on the course so have started the 5 step program. I have already learned so much, I have had lessons before but no one has ever told me the aim of weight shift is to have all of your weight on the front foot at impact - seems obvious now but no one has mentioned it. - I have done 500 reps on the first weight shift drill and already it feels more natural. Can't wait to get 3000 reps up and move on. Hopefully my 19 handicap will start to fall.

Hello Shulei. The goal of the drill above is solely weight shift. If you aren't striking the ground every time with it. That doesn't necessarily mean you are making an error. Just get down the feeling and movement of weight.

I am a serial over the top swinger. I started at Step 0 and worked through the takeaway/backswing. Now that I'm starting the downswing, I've noticed that even if I shift my weight to the left side/left heel, I STILL can come over the top or if I dont my hands will start to fall into the slot but then I pull the ball (improper release?) My first thought was that my weight shift was off, so I went to this drill. In my practice swings, everything feels okay/arms are loose, but when I put a ball in front of me, I steepen way down on the ball and hit it with a severely closed face. I'm only using one arm (left arm) and a 6 iron (even choking down on it), but I cannot get a solid strike in this drill. I'm almost convinced that it has to be something with my arms being too active as I have been doing weight shift drills until my glutes are sore and nothing seems to be changing in the downswing. This drill also takes away the right arm so I'm really confused as to what is happening.

Hello Benjamin. Sounds like you get very active with the upper half when adding the ball back. I would work on smaller drills and motions. Then, build yourself back up. Make sure you can perform weight, post and release in a smaller motion before trying it in a full version. Start with Perfecting Your Golf Impact 1 of 4 and work your way through the series (located in the Video Menu - Bonus Series).

Are the printable worksheets up to date for the 5 step program? The sheet says 5 minute setup plus weight shift but this video is weight shift drill only. Obviously this is what you want us to be doing since it has a rep tracker right? I would appreciate some clarification before I get to involved and do the wrong thing or things in the wrong order. I have been going through the first three vids at varing stages and as Chuck repeatly says been stacking them together to keep my reps up.In addition to this each tip has been incorporated into my game.My reps also take in the neck tie drill.I have been playing go.f since the age of 18.Started RST at age 59 and moved from 27 HC to 22HC in approx 12mths.Will be hopefully spending so time in Chicago for my 60th with a couple of games at Tim Overmans place.YES Ken you have to get of ones rear end to practice RST

Hi, question regarding moving on from step 1 to step 2 - how do I know when I've mastered weight shift? In a drill session I quickly get to a point where I'm aware of the weight shift and it feels good when swinging with lead arm only (including the golf club), but I struggle to hit balls with any consistency or accuracy. I'm happy to keep working on this drill, but I don't really understand how I know when to move on. Thanks!

Hello Nathaniel. The ball strike won't be your best aid in knowing whether you have mastered this drill. If you use a mirror and/or camera and with a ball in front it is showing you have the movement of weight. You may move on to Step 2 to button it up.

Hello Stephen. The key is feeling the weight transfer from the proper muscle group. Some players will do continuous. But, you have to be conscious that you are letting the club produce the movement and that your shifting is swinging the club.

Played first round of year after practicing RST for a few months. Two questions. 1. After the round I feel like my ankles are quite tired and stretched. I take that as a good sign that I was shifting my weight. Am I correct? 2. My miss with irons is a low shot that starts slightly right and drops off to the right even more. I corrected it on the range my trying to shift weight onto right (back) heel on backswing. Am I on track. Overall I was getting effortless power off the tee and several very good fairway shots. I think RST is working well for me.

Hello Martin. 1) Could be from proper shifting or an error of getting on the outside of the feet (Anchor to the Ground Video). 2) Proper weight transfer to the trail side is a must for tons of items (lag, path, etc.). But, it also helps with not getting ahead of the ball too quickly which may lead to low and right.

Yes. I think you got it. For the first time in my life I was really shifting my weight so I felt it in my ankles. ANd I wasn't loading my trailing side because my set uP put my weight too far forward so I wasn't loading on my trail side heel. I was watching Players today and saw how they were loading on their trail sides .

I had practiced the first 1500 weight shift drills in the garage and driveway. After the first 1000 I stacked core rotation. Finally, I added 200 reps today stacking the squat move, at my clubs practice facility. I stacked, weight shift, core rotation and squat and swung with my lead arm only for 10 reps. Then I dropped 1 ball and tried the new swing with great success. I repeated this process a couple of times for each club SW - 5hy and driver. Significant improvement over my old swing. I know that we want the shoulders square at impact, but what about the hips? Should they be slightly open as we pull to the left using the hip abductor muscles? It seems that if the feet are slightly flared, this would be the natural outcome. Is this correct, or am I missing something.

This may seem like an elementary question, but I'm wondering if I can use a weighted club to do this drill. I.e. Momentous swing trainer. Hello Eddie. The only issue with the weight club is the club can start guiding you around versus the body dictating where the club is swinging. You can start to create tension and moving the club. You may use something like an Orange Whip. Where the weight isn't so much you feel you need to use strength to get it to move.

Hello Caleb. Typically, for every 1 day of playing it will set you back 2 days of range sessions. If you are committed to changing the swing it will be hard to reboot while playing a lot. However, I don't think Step 1 or 2 would hurt you to start mastering and feeling good weight shift/post.

I just started the program, 1st day completed 400 reps of the weight shift drill using lead (left) hand only, noticed that the point of contact with the ground is further than I would expect, almost even with the lead foot. Is this because the right hand in off the club.

Thank you Craig makes sense, just started day 2, first 100 reps today of weight shift drill, for these reps I had both hands on the club and the point of contact with the ground moved back a little, slightly ahead of ball position, right where I would expect it to be. Lag and release with two hands on club vs. one hand is a little different, but with some work I sure that will come around. So far it feels pretty good.

Hi just had my 1st session with Step 1 drill and felt that it went reasonably well. I am using an 8 iron and surprised my self that I was hitting reasonable shots with both hands on the club even with the wide steps however when i tried with lead (left) hand only, the ball contact was variable to say the least. What type of contact should i expect with one hand (hand hand) drill? Is contact and ball flight important on this drill and if so should the ball flight be straight and is this something I should concentrate on?

Hello Ian. For the specific drill above I wouldn't worry much about the ball contact. You would need to have a proper lead hand release for the shot execution to be on par (typically, a little lower-straight to slight draw flight). The big picture goal is to have a proper weight transfer and feel that the lead side is starting to be the dominant motion.

Thanks Craig just had my second session with 200 range balls and much improved contact typically 80 -100 yards with a 8 iron (left hand only) was becoming worried that I was becoming more focussed on the contact than the weight shift. Is the wide step (1st part of the drill essential) as i find this tougher to do from a co-ordination perspective that the heal lifts that we are supposed to train towards later on ?

Hello Ian. You may certainly minimize the wide step. Some players have never transferred weight. The bigger step gives an exaggeration or easier perspective. The better you get. The less likely hood of needing a larger step.

Hi Craig. I have some questions on the drills. Do you think that doing the drills only under the RST 5 step is sufficient to learn the rotary swing technique or do you need to do also the RST drills. The second question is on the drill reps. You recommended 3000 reps for each drill. Do you recommend that we complete the 3000 reps for the first drill before moving on to the next drill? Hello Thiraphong. Working on the 5 Step will give you a great downswing. You might need to supplement with some release drills to polish the downswing move off. You may start stacking pieces as you described. But, if you lose a step you need to back down to a smaller drill and get more reps in.

Hi Craig. The weight shift drill - only video is very useful. When Chuck demonstrated the drill in the video I noticed that he is standing pretty straight. Do you think that this drill can be performed by adopting a normal posture for an actual golf shot. In performing this drill should you feel that the weight shift is swinging your left arm upwards rather than trying to feel that you are swinging the left arm itself?

Hello Thiraphong. You should allow momentum help from the weight shift/rotation to swing the lead arm to the top. This drill is mainly used for learning the feel of a weight transfer. But, you could apply normal setup. Similar to the RST Tempo Drill.

Hi Craig, on rock forward and back, what i want to feel balance is when my weight is on my ankle or my heel? I am not sure I understand why I shrug shoulders and depress shoulders. When I hinge from the hip, how do i know or feel at what angle from the hip joint? When I lean inside ankles, Do I lean on both right and left ankles; and I should feel pressure on the inside of my right thight when I am at the top of my back swing. When I lean inside ankle and hip bump/axis tilt, I feel that more weight is on my left feet; that is it is hard or unnatural for me to maintain 50/50 wt. distribution. Do I do it correctly? On your width stance, I need to move 2" from NJA from left and right leg? Thank you.

Hello George. You want to feel balance directly over the ankle joints at setup. The amount of forward hinge will be determined by the proper distance from the ball (How Far to Stand from the Ball Video). You want to keep pressure towards the inside of the feet to help you not sway to the outer edge of the foot. You will feel inner thigh and trail glute at the top of the swing. If you cannot maintain 50/50 you are either adding too much tilt or hip bump. They both should counter balance each other. Yes, 2 inches from trail and lead leg.

Hi Craig, Yesterday, I made a lot of good contact with my left hand. Today, I did not. I chunked. I slowed down and still chunked. I tried big steps, small steps, and tempo drill. However, when I did with two hands, I transferred weight really well. I did with balls. May be I was tired with two days in a row. I don't want to skip around. I will not go to the next step until I got at least 3000 reps. Is this the right approach? and How would I stop chunked it? Thanks.

Hello George. Yes, it is the right approach. More than likely you were tired. It can sneak up on you fast when training new movement patterns. Sounds like the lead arm got a little tired and you started firing your lag a little too soon.

Hi Craig, On 2/21/17, Using three fingers on left hand and tranfer wt. to left by landing on left heel, pivoting, and release made better contact with ball in this section. Still not very smooth from transfering to right to load up on right heel at the hip line, and transferring wt. back to the left. There is one drill for weight shift. In the deeper learning of wt. shift to the left, I understand much better each movement described in the video, why don't you have a drill for this? Or am I supposed to incorporate these movements in the only wt. shift drill? Master Chuck Quinton briefly mentions about stacking these movements in the wt. shift drill. Could you elaborate so that I know what I need to do. I really enjoy the practices of hitting ball with only my left hand. Thanks.

Hello George. The 5 Step System was created as quick start to kick into gear a quality downswing. Even though elements of it are used in a full swing rebuild. Sometimes it doesn't contain all the nuts in bolts for a player. Hence the deeper learning when one becomes confused. Are you looking for more drills to help with weight transfer other than Step 1 - Weight Shift? I would be happy to leave a list.

Hello George. For the 5 Step System I recommend the Rep Tracker. If you look to the top/middle of the video bar on your left you will see Rep Tracker. We do not have any printable sheets. I apologize. For most of our drills we usually recommend anything from a 9 to 7 iron.

I have been doing this drill with both hands and then taking off my index fingers and thumbs to keep light touch, is it ok? With left hand only it is much easier to swing the club upside down. While the purpose of this drill is to learn proper weight shift (only), do I need to touch or hit the carpet / ground with my club? I also tried this drill like lefties do (I'm right handed player like most of us) and I was amazed how easy it was to shift weight, it came naturally.

Hello Enni. You can hit the carpet or ground if you want. But, if you start chunking it or not hitting it at all. Don't blame the weight. It could be a lag and release problem. Taking of the thumb/index is perfectly fine. Yes, weight shift will come more naturally when using your dominant arm. But, it will be harder to get the proper impact.

I'm doing this drill with the orange whip and left hand only. I've noticed as I get tired, around my 3rd set of 25, my left thumb begins pushing on the shaft and that's a bad habit to pick up. After doing thesee I pick up a golf club for release drills and my left thumb is extremely active. I have two thoughts, the first being keep using the whip to build core strength and tempo or do I go to a lighter weight, choked up 8i to focus on the release?

Hello Nick. Sounds like the tension and push come from being tired. You might be trying guide the whip too much causing exhaustion. I would keep using the whip, but the more tension that starts to creep in. Take the lead thumb off. Relax and get back to allowing the body to create the positions versus guiding the hand.

I tried this drill and it put a lot of pressure on my left elbow. It is still sore an hour later after only 40 reps are so. I also had a hard time making decent contact. What should we look for as far as ball flight?

Hello Marcus. I wouldn't add too much of hitting balls until you work through the series. Focus more on getting comfortable with the weight shifting from one side to the other. Ball flight will typically be lower. Sounds like more of a release issue with the lead arm and elbow. But, you will learn more about that as the series progresses.

Hello Marcus. You don't want to use the ball too much as your predictor of weight shift. At impact the trail foot should be very light and through the release you shouldn't have any issue with allowing momentum to carry you to a full follow through. If you must work on impact and add weight to feel if you are correct or not. I would focus on the first few videos of the Perfecting Your Golf Impact Series. You will start at impact and then add weight shift.

I have noticed that my contact point on the mat in this drill without a ball is further forward than when I use a plastic indoor ball. Is it that I am not transferring my weight completely or releasing earlier and hitting down at the ball (also increased divot/force)?

I have found that the spot where my club hits the mat has been very inconsistent and feel that I have not been doing full weight transfer before I start releasing the club. The last reps, I have waited until I feel that I am fully posted up on my left leg and use that as a signal to release the club. I have used a plastic ball (indoors) in these last reps and this post up seems to be resulting in consistent contact and good trajectory. Makes sense?

I know that this is not a grip drill video per se, however, I have a weak left grip problem and want to make sure I am setting it properly. When Chuck immediately starts his weight transfer back, either his grip gets really strong or it is the beginning of his tarting to turn the club over. Can you tell me which that is? Thank you.

Ok to do this drill with no club? Ask because with weight of club I seem more focused on getting swing right and also the struggle with my grip makes swinging left hand only a chore right now. Should you not pay attention to other aspects of the swing with this drill and just make sure feeling a weight shift? Maybe you shed light on how to know you're doing this drill correctly?? Ask my grip question here if ok. When get to top of swing with this drill (because this magnifies my left hand grip issue), is your thumb bracing hard to hold the club, is there a gap between your thumb, pad of your hand under the handle of the club? With mine there is.

Hello Paul. It's fine to perform the drill without the club. You can always drill body movements first. To know you are drilling correctly would be by the time you reach impact and finish that your trail leg has little to zero weight bearing on it. This drill isn't to polish off tilt, club position, etc. It is to get you comfortable with weight transfer back and forth. You will feel some pressure or bracing of the lead thumb against the grip. You do however want to shy away from pushing the thumb too hard against the club when transitioning. Yes, there will be a little gap below the thumb and pad.

You can use the tour temp for this drill for sure, but I would recommend using it after you become more proficient with the movements. Start slow and then when you get enough reps in and feel more comfortable with the movements, set the tour tempo to your desired speed and perform the movements. Great question and good luck.

Really seeing the benefit of the Weight Shift Drills. I have no doubt in my mind now that the weight shift is so important and is the base for everything else to follow. Basically without a good shift, forget a good result. I am finding it really helpful when I focus on shifting to the left before I finish my backswing. And making sure I bump my left hip before I take the club away is so so helpful. before this I kinda felt like the hips just floated with no real snap. Happy Days!

I have just over 1000 reps done and went out to play a round and struggled so much to hit the ball off the turf let alone hit it well. Would starting this drill cause that? I was constantly topping the ball with most of the longer clubs

Hello Gavin. Using solely the weight shift drill shouldn't cause that. If you were topping the ball with the longer clubs. The usual culprit is lack of shift back to the lead side and not hitting down on the ball.

Hello Brian. Slowing down on playing would be preferred. I understand it would be difficult to quit playing. But, remember for about every 1 day of playing it takes you about 2 practice sessions to get back on the horse correctly. I am a "closed hip slider" on my downswing and for the life of me I struggle to get my hips even a little bit open at impact. With a short swing there isn't much rotation of the hips and moving the weight is pretty simple. When Chuck does his two handed swing near the end of the video his hip rotation is very noticeable. Is it enough for this drill just to get weight shift happening with a short swing or should we be working in hip rotation as well?

About 50 reps from doing 3000. When I practice taking regular full swings (either in slow motion or up to full speed) I can't seem to keep my lead foot from rolling towards the outer edge. If I force it to remain flat, I can't seem to be able to rotate around my lead hip to finish the swing. I don't have any injuries or limitations to movement that I'm aware of. I've paid attention to shifting my weight over to the lead side and push up through the lead heel and still have the same problem. Second issue that is related: I've definitely suffered through the last couple of years not being able to keep from losing the tush line. I never feel that I'm getting any power hitting balls while keeping my tush back. I've posted reviews and Aaron is awesome, but I can't seem to get over these 2 issues. I've watched and practiced all the videos relating to the tush line but to no avail. Should I completely stop playing any rounds until I've completed a minimum of 5000 or more reps? That will be very difficult but willing to do what it takes. Thank you!

Use the You hit the Golf Ball with Your Legs and the Chair Drill in combo. Also, take a look at the Anchor to the Ground Video to help you feel staying on the inside and centered part of the lead foot when posting. Also, make sure the lead knee isn't pushing beyond NJA when posting to keep the lead foot from rolling outside.

A couple of things. First, when refining the drill, after the weight shifts to the left should the left leg be in neutral joint alignment and after the the weight shifts to the right should the right leg be about 1 inch inside neutral joint alignment? Second and thinking about a down the line view, in terms of stacking drills, should the drill start with an upright posture and then stack on starting in a golf posture? Or do these refinements come later in the 5 step program?

Hello Ross. After the shift to the lead side the hip/knee/ankle should be in alignment. Yes, the trail shift will appear to be close to 1 inch inside NJA. As you move into Step 2 you will start to be in more of a golf posture setting. This video (even with Chuck close to golf posture) is more of getting the feeling of weight moving back and forth.

In one of the weight shift videos, the instructor gives a visual(for a right handed golfer) of creasing the right pant leg at the pelvic muscle to keep the weight from getting on the outside of the foot during the backswing. Would it be a good swing thought to crease the right pant leg on the backswing and to crease the left pant leg at the pelvic muscle coming down to keep the weight on the inside of the left foot in the downswing??

Hello David. For the backswing the crease would be a good thought. You could possibly think that way coming down, but it might be a little cumbersome and cause a little too early hip rotation. I would focus more on the sit. Like the Sitting Into the Left Side Video or even the pull from the inner thigh in the Fixing Your Weight Transfer Video.

What iron would you recommend using. Having just discovered that I have not used my left side much at all this drill with a 7 iron has fatigued my forearm and wrists. Or, am I better off just sticking with it to develop the needed strength? I probably answered my own queztion.

It really seems to me that since this drill promotes a lateral movement, that the "Squat" element of the swing is eliminated. I am working hard on the squat/dump concept, but don't want to train in the wrong direction by undoing what I have accomplished by overdoing a lateral movement. Your thoughts

I submitted a swing review of me doing this drill because I'd like to work through the 5 step system and Craig noticed that in doing the drill my knee and hip were stacked pretty well but my upper body was hanging back and I was pushing off my trail foot a bit. In my actual swing I believe my knee and hip get fairly close but are a little short of neutral and open at impact and my upper body definitely hangs back. The thing I love about this drill is how simple it makes the weight shift to feel, and my question is, is there a simple feel to adjust this drill for my specific problem?

I know hip spinners usually have a high spinny one and I probably don't fall into the better player category yet but my good shots have a great penetrating ballflight but it's usually too low for 5 or 6 iron on up to driver

Regarding the weight shift... Rory McElroy (and Tiber Woods, I believe) really 'squat' during the weight shift and then post up. What's the purpose of the squat? Is it simply to increase the vertical movement of the post up (lead leg going from squat to extension) in order to increase the "whip" of the club through the hitting area? (Chuck says that the post up is what causes the 'whip' of the club through the hitting area, I believe.)

Have done lots of weight shift reps, but finding this is putting strain on my hips (esp. when I added in the club). I assume I am not shifting over far enough to get into neutral joint alignment as I push up with the left glute. If I do shift my weight over that far, I feel like I am way off centre and my head is all over the place. Should I be shifting my belt-buckle 1 inch right of setup position and then 3 inch left of setup position? Or should I shift as far as necessary to get into neutral joint alignment? Should I keep my head centred when I'm doing the weight-shift?

Hello David. The head will have to move a little in the golf swing. The head is connected to the body and will have to react. The shift is a 1 inch movement away and 3 inches back towards the target from setup. You shouldn't have to go more because the stance width should still be 2 inches outside of NJA. Make sure you are shifting properly. Take a look at How to Swing From the Ground Up.

In his 2012 book Mike Bender says that the weight shift is a result of a correct setup. In other words the weight shift is a result of the swing. In person he has told me to never "try " to shift my weight .

Hello Richard. It sounds like the outside moving the inside versus the inside moving the out. You want the body to be the origin of movement. Some athletic players may adapt to naturally shifting their weight while swinging a club. But, I have found far more players do not shift their weight allowing them to have a more fluid and balanced swing. Weight shift helps create lag, shallower downswing plane and is roughly 14.4% or more of your power in the swing. Take a look at How to Swing from the Ground Up.

Hello Jarek. Take a look at the Perfect Practice Makes Perfect Video for better information on how to practice. In the meantime, once you get the practice swing perfected on camera. Start with lead arm only hits. You can work your way up from a 9 to 3 length and so forth. Take a look on film. Figure out which feeling you need to exaggerate when correcting with a lead arm only hit in front of a ball.

Hello, Should the student always be "moving" back and forth with this drill or setup normally and then do the drill, then setup again, do the drill, etc.? If you were trying to hit balls eventually with this drill you would have to setup/address each time? Thanks.

You can do either, the goal is to get comfortable shifting your weight. At first, it helps many golfers to always be moving around, then slowly make it less "sloppy" by starting from a normal address position.

Chuck, if I break down your instruction into only the four discrete weight shift drills as you demonstrated; (and I understand that there could be more than four but bear with me for this hypothetical), how many reps of each drill should I complete before I can expect that there would be a sufficient amount of myelin wrapped around that drill's nerve circuit to enable me to confidently move on to the next drill?

Hello Stephen. Any given session you want to have at least 100 quality reps to start the process. Once, you get to a 1000 reps you will start to be pretty proficient at performing the new move. 3000-5000 to master.

Hello Terry. You want 3000-5000 of shifting the weight properly. You may move from wider to smaller depending on your proficiency of doing the move. After about a 1000 of the wide you will be pretty good a getting the weight transfer. Start to narrow the step. If you notice you lose the proper motion, then revert back up to a wide motion. If you can retain the proper shift, then keep narrowing until you master.

When I try and push my weight into my right heel my weight shifts past neutral joint alignment. ls the weight shift something you should consciously do before the club moves at all or when should you shift your weight in the sequence. Does it follow the take away or when? When I just focus on pushing my right heel in my hands drag into the backswing.Is it something that comes naturally or do you actually try and push your weight into your right heel? Thx

Hey Les, try rolling your trail ankle in a little bit at address. Weight shift will need to be a conscious movement until you master it and it should be the first movement off the ball for sure. Once you become more proficient, you can start shifting and rotating simultaneously, thus getting you away from the hands dragging back as you say. Shifting the weight to start the swing is critical. Hope that helps.

No problem. The hips are moving dynamically in the swing. They are shifting and rotating just slightly into the takeaway, 5-10 degrees or so, which will start rotating the torso with it. At this point you are completing the body rotation on a stable trail leg to the top.

I could post this anywhere but I'm currently working on this drill, so here goes: could you put up a terminology page? I find some of your terms confusing and not always used as defined in on-line golf dictionaries. E.g., "lag" is used frequently is ways that have nothing to do with "a shot that is purposively dropped short of the cup." "Wrist cock" in this video doesn't appear on the PGA golf term site. And so on. Thanks for considering this.

Hello Gary. You can allow for a soft left elbow. You don't want it overly adding flexion though. You struggle with the left arm bending in the drill or normal full swing?

Both...always have done. I've been to many teachers and they just told me to live with it because my timing is so good most of the time. My first move on the downswing is to straighten the left arm but then I have no lag which is how I found your site. I'm very encouraged by your videos so I'm determined to do this right. I uploaded a couple of swings for analysis so you will see the bend.

Not sure what stepping closed means? Closing the hips or turning the lead foot inward? I wouldn't suggest either one really. I would focus on what is causing the hip spinning and then work on training the correct movements at slow speed at first and then ramp the speed up as you become more comfortable with the movements.

How much head movement is "permitted"? I've developed a reverse pivot - in part because I try to keep my head motionless. When I do this drill, it feels like my head is really moving back and forward a lot. Chris

Hello Christopher. The head needs to move in the swing. Keeping it overly still can cause a reverse pivot. Usually about a inch or so swinging back and a couple inches down. Don't lock the head.

Great drill... When I start the swing with my feet together on left and then step right and swing, I kill the ball straight down the middle. When I start from the normal stance and do the weight shift, I lose considerable power. Am I not shifting to the left side enough? Actually thinking of using the "step" seeing during a live right of golf. Thanks, Bill

Hello Bill. More than likely you are using the momentum and better hip turn to help you gain a little more power and it is creating a more athletic flow into the strike while stepping. Starting with Step 2 you should gain back what you lose when you don't step.

Steve M recommended this weight shift drill to me because, rightfully so, he saw I was not shifting my weight from my lower body. Instead, I was attempting to shift my weight with my upper body and my stance was too wide to allow a proper weight shift. As I mentioned in my profile I have numb feet (peripheral neuropathy) which results in a balance problem. Thus, a previous instructor recommended a wider stance and shifting my weight with the upper body. So, I am confused. It seems I am getting contradictory instruction. I am willing to work on this drill but am concerned about what I should do if loss of balance becomes an issue as in the past. Is there an alternative drill I should review to ensure I shift my weight and maintain my balance?

Who told you to shift with your upper body and a wider stance?? An RST instructor???? If it wasn't an RST instructor then you should probably disregard everything you heard from that person as they have no clue what's really going on with shifting your weight in the golf swing, the basics of rotation, your proprioception or anything else for that matter. This drill is one of the best as it's simple and gets you moving as so many people stay frozen over the ball with their lower body. As for your loss of balance due to neuropathy, that's a bit outside of our realm and sounds like someone in the physical therapy world would be the better person to help you work through those issues.

2 quick questions. First, if I do this in slow motion, I notice my "at impact" the club face is shut when my wrist is pointing to target. I am assuming my grip is too strong? Also, I have a tendency to do the opposite of the "over the top" which is I drop the club(flatten) and need to flip to square club. Any recommendations?

You need some secondary axis tilt at impact to help shallow the swing out or the club would be coming straight down into the ground. The spine needs to be pointed just outside the lead knee. I asked about the shaft lean for a different reason...it will tell me what you are doing with the club on the way down to get the club shut. Thanks

I'm going to start this drill, but had a question regarding where to apply the weight. My instructor mentioned shifting my weight to the inside of my feet; however, in Chuck's videos here, it looks like when he's doing his steps he's shifting to the outside of his feet (you can see the inside of his foot lift off a little when his stride reaches its peak). I believe that's just from exaggerating things. So, when doing these stepping drills, should we try to be conscious of leaving the weight on the inside of our feet?

Hey Kevin, Just make sure that you are not rolled out onto the trail foot. If you have been battling with lower body stability issues, then yes, focus on the weight staying to the inside portion of the heel/ankle area.

Chuck, It all makes sense. However, I'm 80 years old and my ability to turn back is a bit limited. However, if I lift my right heel on the back swing I can make it to almost 90 degrees. Would you have a problem with me lifting my heel as I practice this drill...with the anticipation that I will continue to do so when hitting balls?

Hello. I decided to try hitting balls while lifting my lead leg heel, to shift to the trail side and slamming it down and lifting the trail leg heel while shifting to the lead side. Never ever produced such beautiful ball flight in my life! Combined with very relaxed arms to hit at the ball from the 6 week series, the ball starts low with a tour pro like trajectory and the distance is amazing. Is there anything wrong with staying with this heel lift technique like Ben Hogan or Sam Snead?

Hey James, Glad to hear that you are getting some good results. You are fine to lift the lead foot like this as long as its not moving your head off the ball too much and is not allowing your pelvis to become unstable and over rotate going into the backswing. Keep up the good work.

Hello Loan. Your toes will help with a little stability, but you should be balanced over your lead ankle joint and not by the "balls of the feet." Use a camera and mirror to check positions. Also, when relying on feel make sure you feel the lead heel centered and pressed into the ground after you shift your weight.

Hello Loan. Yes, the trail side will do little to nothing. You can take the focus off of it when transferring the weight back to the lead side. The trail side when shifting will move due to the reaction of pulling from your lead side. It will respond in kind to proper lead side movements.
