COIL BREAKTHROUGH

I am posting this here as well because people are here COIL BREAKTHROUGH I have had what I think is a breakthrough in the coil. This is in the form of a dialogue. Between Myself and ME MS: What is this coil thing anyway? What is it for? Me: Chuck told me that it’s a good thing to do. MS Ok. but what is it for? Me: Maybe you dont know that much about Chuck. 40 years ago he was sent down to earth by the Golf Gods, in order to help wretched human beings like myself who have never scored lower than 94. ( 100 if we are perfectly honest.) MS Ok. I get it about Chuck. But why do you do the Coil? Me : This is probably beyond you, but think of it like a spring. . Or a drawn bow. There is tremendous energy in the coiled spring when it springs back. MS: So how does that help you? Me: Isnt it obvious? Right now I am lucky if my drive goes 150 yards. With that kind of power it will go 180 yards at least! MS : So you let the spring go and you hit the ball with all that energy? Me: Right. MS: How is that working for you? Me; Not very good. Usually goes into the bush. Or into the lake. It will always go in the lake if there is one. Why is that? I am releasing the coiled spring perfectly ! I think it’s because the golf gods dont like me. They hate me. BREAKTHROUGH Today working with Mr. Goaty and struggling over and over, I have come to a breakthrough! The Coil is Not about unleashing a spring to hit the ball!! It has one purpose, and one purpose only. I coil around pulling the lead shoulder out of the rib cage, by the hip going back, and the belly button going into the pocket and create the coil. The coil has one purpose only. When I let go of the spring it pulls my arms and club down into the compact position. Once my coil has achieved this, it is over. The spring has done its work. This is a breakthrough for me. Until today I knew I had to do the coil but had absolutely no idea why. When I was thinking that it was about hitting the ball, thats when all the body rotation chasing the ball comes in. It is actually really simple. Coil so that the hands and club drop into that first position just before GDP happens.

That's a solid realization. You nailed it: the coil's job is to create the geometry that lets your arms and club fall into the compact position naturally. Once they're there, the coil has done its work. The mistake a lot of golfers make is thinking the coil itself is the power source—like they need to "unleash" it at the ball. But that's backwards. The coil sets up the positions and sequencing that allow the downswing to work. The power comes from the stretch and the proper sequence, not from trying to manually release stored energy. Keep working with GOATY on this. Reps with real feedback will lock in whether your coil is actually pulling your arms down into compact or if you're still chasing rotation. That's where you'll see the difference between understanding it and owning it.
