Could one set up mistake, make it seem impossible to make a good golf swing?

Could one set up mistake, make it seem impossible to make a good golf swing? I made a discovery in my own set up and swing this fall that has changed my entire outlook on my golf game. I've struggled for at least 20 years on not being able to flight wedges, or irons for that matter, but mostly wedges. I ran across a video of someone giving a wedge fitting and the fitter told the golfer that his face was shut on his wedge, he said hold it straight out at eye level and tell me what you see, he replies it's closed. The fitter said, it's easy to do with these wedges today that have high toes on them. With that being said, I grabbed a wedge and held it up in front of me after addressing a ball and sure enough it was closed. I grabbed several other irons and tried it, and sure enough I address the ball with a slightly closed clubface. So, as awkward as it felt, I began addressing the ball with what I thought looked to be an open club face.....oh was I amazed at the results. For years I've never felt what it was like to "release" the club, even after many reps of working on the release. The only thing I can think of is that my subconscious would not let me swing the club properly, knowing it would go left of the world if I would swing correctly and release the club with that closed clubface. I've watched the video of Chuck talking about controlling the trajectory of your shot with your left wrist and I would try and try and try, but couldn't for anything get the feeling of that happening. Is this because when hitting balls, my subconscious would not allow me to hit it that far left because my club face was closed?? I don't know maybe I'm just a head case?? I don't feel like I slide into the ball anymore, I feel like I can work the clam shell better, all because I'm able to release the club now??

Might be the case. With the club preset, subconsciously you knew that a released-closed club face would entail poor strikes. I have seen this with some students and the light bulb moment was after correcting the face they felt the club could freely rotate without extra need for manipulation. They stopped fighting the design and physics.
I think most people will be shocked to realize just how much one little simple set up mistake control off the entire Swing
