Should i think of turning my left fingers under on backswing so i have the image of getting into a Dustin Johnson left wrist at top. When i try this move i feel like the face angle is slightly closed at waist height and my left wrist is flat on top. It seems like my grip really matters too.

Hello Martin. Seems like that would lead to a closed club face and bowed position at the top. If your grip is super strong. It may be why it is working for you. But, I wouldn't add more variables to have the correction. I would just weaken the grip slightly.
