When pulling the trail shoulder backward, what type of motion should I expect.

When pulling the trail shoulder backward, what type of motion should I expect to see in the lead knee? When the lead leg is unweighted (because of 85% of weight on the trail foot), there's a lot room for movement in the lead knee - especially if I allow the lead heel to come off the ground. Can you describe in the lead knee should rotate in place/downward, move laterally towards the back foot, move towards/away from target line, or something else?
