I recently had a swing review which clearly identified my head was moving away.

I recently had a swing review which clearly identified my head was moving away from the target and my arms were folding across my chest during the back swing (thank you for that review). I was recommended “Play the best golf of your life in 6 weeks | 1 of 6”, “How to fix a flat shoulder turn “, DEAD drill step 1 – The back swing “ among others. I diligently completed the reps and when viewing myself in front of mirror (without a club) I have had some success but moving to the golf simulator with a club and filming myself the head movement and arms folding across my chest are once again present. Frustrated, I began looking for alternative solutions and came across instructional videos explaining that the rotation piece in the back swing seems to be out pacing the spinal extension piece. The recommendation was that I should feel like my head/spine extends towards the target while rotating. A second instruction video and recommendation was that the chest (pecs) should not remain level during the back swing (the trail pecs should be higher than the lead pec at the top of the back swing). A third video explained that spinal flexion at address in tour players is replaced by side bend through a sequence of moves (rotation-side bend-extension, and again rotation-side bend-extension, etc, etc, to the top of the back swing) I’ve seem to have progressed with these three recommendations, but prior to continuing down this path and submitting my own video for review, I wanted your opinon from an injury prevention standpoint as well as any consequences to what we are trying to achieve from a positional standpoint at the top of the back swing. You can refer to these instructional videos on you tube “TURNING AROUND YOUR CENTER | Feel vs Real”,“Golf Back swing Extension: Your Key to Better Golf”, “How you should extend your spine in the golf swing”, if your not clear as to the point I’m trying to convey. Thank you.

Hi Don, There is obviously a LOT of golf instruction content on the internet and there is a really good and really bad stuff all at the same time. The thing to remember is that not all instruction has a good understanding of how to keep the body safe while swinging the club. So, if you find a video, that allow you to shift your weight, and turn your body properly (90 degrees while maintaining axis tilt) without your head moving off the ball any further than 1 1/2 inches off the ball, WHILE swinging the club, then by all means, you can certainly work on the drill videos mentioned. My question back to you is... You did the reps without the club, then went directly to the simulator, started swinging the club with the ball present and you saw it things breakdown correct. When doing the movements from the other videos mentioned, while in the simulator, do you see your body moving better??? I would always suggest doing reps without the club as a start BUT you need to introduce the club back to the practice sessions away from the ball and simulator, back check the movements to make sure they are correct and then doing a large amount of reps with the arms and club in the mix before you head back to the simulator. Reps without the club don't always turn into the correct golf swing right away. You need to challenge yourself very gradually, to bring the ball and the distractions of the simulator or golf course.
