Kids and golf question for the brain trust- Since my renewed interest in golf.

Kids and golf question for the brain trust- Since my renewed interest in golf, my kids have gotten curious. They are 12,9, and 5. The last thing I want to do is fill their heads with swing thoughts or mechanics (the way I learned, and am trying to unlearn) and the first thing I want to do is instill a love for the game. The older kids are very athletic and coachable (competitive gymnasts) and the youngest is just having fun with dad and getting treats at the course. So, how would you keep a kid interested and improving? I know this isn’t the usual question, but you guys aren’t the usual coaches either ;) Thanks, Warren

Hello Warren. The main thing is keeping it fun. Tough to do with all the mechanics of golf in world out there. The younger they are try to have them focus a little on speed. If they develop a good kinetic sequence to for speed. Worry about clean up later. I would try for good setup fundamentals, but not bog them down with positions. They are young enough to develop speed and then start polishing off positions at a later date when more interested in improvement. Try to play games with them at the range. Closest to the pin, change shoots distance, try to shape, etc... Or, chipping and putting games. How many can you make in a row, chip within 5 foot radius. I seem to have success when I make it a game, but also providing a challenge.
