Sharing my findings today, please let me know if I am on the right track. This was a result of following the "Widen your lead wrist" video. Summary: the single-hand swings helped me understand how the weight distribution and hip rotation dictate the low point of the swing arc. 1. I started with square hips and a 50/50 weight distribution on the feet. Then I swung the club single-handedly to learn how to do the "weightless downswing" and the wrist rotation at the bottom of the arc. Once I felt comfortable with one hand, I switched to another. I practiced back and forth. I noticed that the low points were pretty much in front of the shoulder on the club-hand side. 2. Then I repeated the same single-hand swings but shifted 90% of the weight to the lead side. I found the low point shifted accordingly to the lead side. When swinging with the lead hand, the low point was almost directly in front of the lead foot. When swinging with the trail hand, the low point was in the middle. 3. Then I turned the hips to be 35-45 degrees open to the target, but shoulders less so (10-20 degrees). At one point I found the low point was almost at the same location regardless which hand I used to swing the club. This “discovery” helped me understand why the weight should be mostly on the lead side, the hips need to be 35-45 degrees open, and shoulders should be squared (in reality they are pulled a little open to 10-20 degrees) - because the set-up results in an ideal ball striking position. After I developed some muscle memory with this setup, I practiced the release with both hands gripping the club. Surprisingly it became very natural to enter the GOAT position to start the release and execute the hand/wrist rotation. Today is definitely a significant day for my learning.
