I believe it would be advantageous to discuss the differences/similarities between weight shift, body mass shift and pressure shift. Any thoughts on doing a video on this topic in detail?

Craig (Certified RST Instructor)
Hello Roy. I can talk to the team about this. The simplest way to think about this is weight shift/body mass is your weight (say for me 185 lbs.). Pressure is the amount of vertical force you are using with the feet.

Hi Craig, When initiating the transition, it feels much more natural to have a little mini squat/ sit action into lead side and then to square hips. Is this ok? I watched some videos of tiger and I see this same action. Sit into lead side Start turning/squatting together to square

Hello Matthew. As you start to sit the hips have to rotate a little to make sure you don't get into a closed hip slide. I just completed your review. Take a look see before we go down this road too much. I thought it looked pretty snazzy.

I am in the process of progressing from RST Instructor review of my Set Up to the practical checkout for Step 1 (Weight Shift). I would be grateful if you could clarify something for me regarding the requirements for the practical checkouts. Since the club is only introduced at Step 4, the practical checkouts for Steps 1-3 assess just the body movements only, but are to be demonstrated at full swing speed without holding a club. Is this correct?

Hello Arthur. Ideally, we would like to see you perform the move/drill without holding a club. This way we can make sure you are drilling correctly. Then, implement into the full swing.

Hi Craig, I’m sure I’ve seen in a note from Chuck that the 5-Step process will continue in parallel with the new ‘One Drill’ Bootcamp tuition programme. Is this correct? If so, I am happy to continue with the 5-Step swing reviews and look forward to my next video submission as a follow-up to your analysis/comments. Kind regards, Arthur.

Hi all. Finding the RSG videos to be awesome and extremely helpful, but still having problems keeping my right shoulder from firing at the top, and resulting in the dreaded Over-The-Top/Outside-In swing path. I am trying to keep my back to the target as long as possible, but is there any other advice to help me overcome this swing-killing defect? Thanks much.

When we shift weight from left to right, at the top of the swing, is it OK to lift the left heel a little bit? Then during the transition when we shift the weight from the right heel back to the left heel, is this the time to do the squat to square move? Thanks!
June 22, 2019
64x64
Mikko-Pekka
Hello Ken. My understanding. It all depends why you feel you should lift your heel. RST claims that everyone can make a full shoulder turn ( I do believe that). If you are pulling and using your obliques (5 min. to perfect rotation) and the heel comes up then I think it is OK. Just look that you are not overturning your hips (problems w/ overturning your hips). In Winter series in the downswing section you can see Chuck doing the stomp drill which is similar what you are describing. The squat should happen automatically if you really hit your heel to the ground. Hope that helps.

No problem mate. If you are just starting with videos then I would recommend that you send your swing for review. Those awesome instructors can give you a detailed plan how to go trough the videos and direct you to the most important videos to help you build a swing of your dreams! If you want to go alone then the 5 step series is a good start. Get steps 1 and 2 down first as they are the most important ones.

How much lateral head movement is excessive? As I shift my weight and look in a mirror, my head is moving more than 1 inch to the right. If I keep my head perfectly still, I do not feel enough weight has shifted on the backswing. My stance width is fine and in NJA.
June 21, 2019
64x64
Craig (Certified RST Instructor)
Hello Joe. Stance should be 2 Inches outside of NJA . Moving more than 1 inch would be excessive. But, the head has to move. It it stays perfectly still/stable. It will be hard to achieve weight transfer. A little movement while making sure you maintain trail hip line (Weight Shift Video Part 2) will be okay.

Hi, just started the 5 step program this week and was working on weight shift today at the simulator and i certainly feel it helped my iron game but was still struggling with the driver. Next time will get a video of it but my swing speed was less with the driver and I was having trouble getting a consistent lift off the tee. Towards the end I tipped my shoulders back a bit which helped but I was much better (swing speed and contact) with a 4 iron and nearly as far as driver , any thoughts or just continue with the program for now ?

Seeing results early in the process can feel like a justification for the process, but positive results early in the process is not always indicative of long term success. You should be looking for results based on how your body looks in comparison to the instructors in the video. You may go through a rough patch at times, but once your swing is complete, I can assure you that you won't be disappointed with where your ball goes. That being said, your shoulders being tilted back more to get more launch out of your driver makes a lot of sense. The driver is a specialty club and there's a setup adjustment that we make to hit the driver better. However, it's best to perfect the standard swing first before we move on to making adjustments to hit your driver further.

Hi, Thank you for the quality of your teaching. I just started the program a week ago to rebuild my swing which was destroyed by a lot of bad advice (weight on the balls of the feet, strong grip, turn the hips fast, position of the ball ...) . It's amazing how I improved my swing only with setup and weight shift lessons. The weight transfer exercises helped me a lot. I was on the range today and it was like a "click" occurred: no need to think about the weight shift. I hit balls (1 ball for 5 drills) and I suddenly felt the downswing starting from the lower body. The upper body was effortlessly lead by the lower body. I did 3/4 swings smooth and easy, I made about 50-60% of very good shots: straight, effortless and constant (15m of dispersion), which is the most important for me at this stage of my reconstruction. I wonder if I can add the next step (core rotation) so quickly and continue with weight shift drills? Thank you for your advice and comment.

Hi, I am really enjoying the step drill and am building up more reps as I go along. I am doing the Big steps at the moment. How many reps do you suggest I do, before I should start doing the smaller steps. ? Also, do you think that I should use the Rotary Connect aid whilst doing this drill. Regards Tmc.

Craig (Certified RST Instructor)
Hello Tony. I don't believe you need the Connect for the above drill. The reps are all up to your movements. If you are moving well you need to challenge yourself and see at what point do you stop moving weight efficiently. Use the point where you lose it as your benchmark and do lots of proper reps at your max point. Then, proceed further.

Interesting the way in which doing this drill while in the proper set-up has actually been a workout for my lower back. It isn't causing nerve pain, but actual muscle workout from requiring my lower back holding up my torso.

Ok, I noticed this was extremely helpful. For some reason I was keeping my head very stable (not shifting) but the my hips weren't turning and my left shoulder would get stopped by my chin leading to a incomplete turn and chicken wing. I was keeping my weight on the inside of my right foot on the backswing. After I do the weight shift drill my hips naturally turn, which turns my head without shifting and I keep the weight on the inside of my right foot. This allows a full turn with elbow in a pointed down position. Make sense?
August 20, 2017
64x64
Craig (Certified RST Instructor)
Hello Eric. Yes. You need to allow for some hip rotation going back. Let the pull of the shoulder blade and the obliques naturally pull the hips back.
August 21, 2017
64x64
Eric
Thanks, I kind of intrigued by the connection. It seems like the weight shift turns the hip (momentum?) but also gets me over my right side with elbow pointed down/loaded. I was just trying to understand the cause and effect? Thanks. Eric
August 22, 2017
64x64
Craig (Certified RST Instructor)
Hello Eric. Not much of a connection with the trail elbow staying point down. But, if you take a look at How to Swing from the Ground Up you will see how the shifting and momentum do aid.

Thank you. Great video that I did not see before. I think you nailed it. Even with the shoulder glide I was getting to tight going back with my shoulders so in couldn't rotate back into a good position at the top (arms start pulling back into chicken wing). I had a very hard pull tendency. Excited to incorporate into my driving range work. Thanks again

I am both a hip spinner and an over the topper, i have a tendency to rip everything open and towards the ball from the top. Have also played some of my best golf ever this year by focusing at different points two things: the first was just keeping my arms loose and letting the club drop what felt like way inside on the downswing. The second is trying to leave my hands back where they were at the end of the backswing. I believe I have figured out that if I swing naturally while feeling like I keep my head in roughly the same spot from the takeaway until after impact, everything else takes care of itself. This also makes sense to me because the eyes are so important to the nervous system and athletic movements in general. Just wondering if this has worked for other people and what you (RST) think of the concept
July 18, 2017
64x64
Craig (Certified RST Instructor)
Hello Ryan. The head will have to move in the golf swing to shift weight properly. Albeit, not very much. But, it won't stay completely static. If you were overly moving off the ball, then your thoughts would make sense. Creating a little stabilization. The feeling of leaving the hands back is good as well. Also, if your drop inside was created a little more by weight shift, pull, and gravity. It would be more repeatable for you (How to Fix Plane and Path Video).

I have seen it posted a couple of times regarding playing a round undoes 2 trips to the range. I'm assuming that means playing the round will ultimately reinforce some bad habits that haven't been worked out and it will take 2 practice sessions to work through those. With the 5 step system we are working on several things before the club itself is introduced. With the line of thinking from above, should I hold off on going to the range until the prescribed # of reps are completed in the pre club drills?

Hi, How does weight shift and shallowing of the club on the downswing reconcile with people who can hit the ball 300 yards on one leg and can hit the ball miles on their knees etc?

Hello Tom. Lag and Release constitute more than 60% of your power. You can load your wrists manually and train how to release it. However, it is much tougher to learn. And, you aren't using biomechanics leading to less efficiency.

I have a good understanding of weight shift requirements but from the top of the backswing, I find it difficult to move the weight completely forward without a certain amount of pushing off with the right foot which I know is incorrect. I see in the comment below you suggest pulling the weight with the left hip. I find this alone is not dynamic enough to get a good weight shift going forward. I'm fit and flexible so this is not the issue. I have been doing the weight shift exercises but if you think about it this requires a certain amount of pushing off with the right foot to make the step. I shall be grateful for your comments to tackle this problem. Ian

Craig (Certified RST Instructor)
Hello Ian. Think if you stood straight up and down. Weight balanced 50/50 in proper golf stance width. If I asked you to rock or put all your weight on your trail leg without lifting your lead leg. Would you push yourself over there or simply rock/settle into trail leg. Now, the same going to the lead leg. If I told you to now put all weight on your lead leg without picking up trail leg. Would you require push to place the weight? You simply would move the weight back to the lead side. Not push or jump of trail leg/foot. Take a look at Preventing Hip Pain to understand how to pull the weight better. But, you shouldn't require push to transfer from side to side.

I am working on getting the club to the top correctly, but than have a question on the start of the downswing. There are a lot of videos on the website (good one) but i am a little confused on the start of the downswing. I have seen, lateral shift to the left, roll the left knee out, set to squat. Hi. I've been using RST for about a year or so, but haven't really followed the drills in order, so now I want to start to set that right. I am starting the 5 step ptogram, and watched the intro to weight shift and the step (side to side) drill. However, that is the only drill on my dashboard list. The next item down is Deeper Learning. 2 questions ... I) why does my dashboard look different to the one I see Chuck explain where the 5 step drills are all arranged down the middle column? 2) I know I've seen a weight shift drill with chuck in the gym, arms folded across his chest etc ... why don't I see that next on my dashboard list? Oh, third question ... how do I start to record my reps? I'm keen to get going for real so pls help! Thanks

Hello David. It sounds like you are pushing the hip against the socket wall. Make sure you load the trail glute and allow for hip rotation (Weight Shift Video Part 2). Take a look at (Preventing Hip Pain) to load the lead glute without pushing. And, finally (Anchor to the Ground) to keep the pressure more on the insteps. I apologize, I don't have any specific stretches for the SI Joint. But, you can find plenty of stretches online.

Question: I live in Southwestern PA, where we constantly deal with uneven lies. So, does every shot necessitate a weight shift? Oftentimes we are faced with a sidehill, uphill or downhill lie, where it is very difficult to shift weight during a swing. On these lies I have had a difficult time trying to shift my weight and make good contact. I end up using more of an arms-only swing. So should I endeavor to inject weight in EVERY shot? Thanks.

Can you please estimate what percentage of my weight should be on my right side at Setup, and at the top of the Take away? And should it be mostly on the inside of my right foot? I tried finding this somewhere else before I asked, but no luck.
January 9, 2017
64x64
Craig (Certified RST Instructor)
Hello Charles. At setup the weight should be balanced 50/50. Approximately 80% of the weight will shift in the takeaway. It should be over the ankle joint trending to be more on the inside of the foot versus allowing it to roll to the outside.

Must I fire my right glute somehow during the backswing or in the end of back swing? I feel that my right knee bends a little in the end of backswing as a result from hip rotation. Is this bending enough or must I sit down a little more to fire my right glute? Or is it all done if I fire my both glutes by going down - sitting down - in the beginning of the downswing?
December 5, 2016
64x64
Craig (Certified RST Instructor)
Hello Antti. If your right glute is engaged that should be sufficient enough. If the right legs bends a touch and you can feel the weight is placed with glute engagement. You don't need to add much more sit or bend to be sufficiently on the right side.

Question: Are you advocating starting the weight-shift to left ankle while completing the shoulder-elevation and rt. arm flexion inorder to allow the wrist to set or does the elevation complete before shifting the weight?
September 9, 2016
64x64
Craig (Certified RST Instructor)
Hello Cullen. Most players start a slight weight shift back to the lead side before the backswing is finished. Wrist set will be gradual in the backswing and shifting back to the lead side will help increase the lag or wrist angle due to the change in momentum. Hello GC. The only way to access the swing would be to upload one of yours into the Self Analysis Section and compare from there.

Is the natural shallowing of the club in this exercise sufficient ?. What position would you expect the hands and arms to be towards the end of the downswing, is parale to the ground in line with feet before firing wrists about correct. Keeping right shoulder back seems critical

Hello Michael. Making sure the trail shoulder doesn't push through is very important. There should be enough shallowing in this drill. The club would be close to the position you describe.

Help! How do you really shit your weight and hold your head in the same spot? Your head weights about 17 pounds. HELP!

Hello Ronald. I think maybe a typo above . While "shifting" the weight the head will have to move a little. You don't want the head staying perfectly stagnant in the swing.

Yes on the typo, shift. What would say is "a Little"?

I don't feel as though as I get the correct weight shift to the rear and lead sides. Without having the Flight Scope technology to see how much pressure I'm putting into each leg, is there a way I know / or a feeling I have put enough weight into each side?

Hello Troy. Without a Boditrak it would be tough to tell. Your only test would be picking up the opposite foot. It should be relatively easy to accomplish because of lack of weight bearing or load.

I still have a problem with weight shift. I have tried to keep back (belt buckle drill) to avoid the hip spin but as soon as soon as I square up and then fire...the right arm..I am so strong from the right that my ball contact is actually fine but find that at finish I have way too much weight on the right leg. an exaggeration of this is the fall back sensation. My should line steepens and I don't stay covered over the ball as I post up. One solution is not to swing so hard but I lose distance.

The explanation on HOW to shift left was a game changer for me. I can tell that I've never posted up quite right before this. Never had a straight left leg at impact. Also, I would often lose the tush line, end with my weight forward, and in extreme cases, a very awkward and abbreviated follow through. Very excited to take this to the course.

Hi. I have been working on the weight shift for almost 4 weeks now but not sure I am getting it right. When I narrow my stance in order to get my weight shifted all the way to my left I find myself blocking my shots (especially driver) to the right. I think this is because I am loosing my balance (numb feet) and swaying left. If I take a wider stance the block shot goes away but the weight is not shifted all the way left. I have been struggling with swaying a long time and only seem to control it with a wider stance. Is there anything else I can try to stop the swaying with a narrower stance? (Note: Please don't tell me I need to see a physical therapist for the balance/numb feet problem (been there; done that; no help - it is something I need to live it!).

Hello Dan. No therapist needed. Few things that may help. 1) Take a look at the Anchor to the Ground Video. 2) Take a look at the Proper Tee Height Video to help with setup adjustments. You can be a touch wider with the driver. 3) Fixing Your Weight Transfer and Preventing Hip Pain Video - Both will help with the proper pulling motion.

Hi guys, new member here. How many repetitions should we be aiming for in a session, then roughly how many sessions before adding the next step.

Craig (Certified RST Instructor)
Hello Dave. A minimum of 100 quality reps per session. It takes 3000-5000 to master, but after about 1000 you should be pretty proficient and can start stacking other pieces.

The videos on the website are protected for premium members only and we have to host them privately through different company away from youtube. You should be able to stream whatever is playing on your laptop screen if you are using a chromecast or something of that nature.

Great videos. How do you know when it's time to move on to the next sequence? It is something visual from the drills that you will see? Is it seeing a breakdown in the fundamentals you engrained in the prior step when you move on to the next?

Hello Leeric. Both. You can start to see the trail foot start to push through and lift up too early. Also, if you move to the next step and the wheels start to fall off. Back down a step to get more quality reps in.

Great drill. I do have trouble shifting weight and have been trying to figure it out , this will help with the sequencing. One thing Mr.Quinton mentions was about the down cock of the wrist and the cocking. I always thought they cocked naturally or you did that when the club was parallel to the ground by elevation of right elbow. I guess the idea or question is do I try to cock them or just shift the weight as I get close the top ? Evan

Craig (Certified RST Instructor)
Hello Evan. The wrists need to gradually cock as you reach the top. Some players will allow this to happen naturally due to the weight of the club head. Others need to train a little wrist cocking or set. When you shift the weight to the lead side you want to allow the wrist set to increase due to the change in momentum or direction back to the lead side.
