Hello Ali. If you are spinning your shoulders with release you will tend to pull. Take a look at Keep Your Rear Shoulder Back Video. Also, slice would be open face with typically out to in path. Take a look at How to Fix Plane and Path and Stop Slicing Start Releasing Video.

I’m a right handed player, I notice that when I practicing impact drills and hitting balls at 1/4 or 1/2 speed, my balls tend to go a little left. The club face is slowly rotating close but at impact it is a facing a little left event though my left hand is flat at impact. How do I rectify this? do I use a weaker grip? When I grip the club with my left hand I can see 2-/12 knuckles. May be I should try a neutral grip. I I started using a somewhat stronger grip when my swing was wonky, prior to joining Rotary Swing. Now that it has improved so much, I’m wondering if a neutral grip will cure the club face pointed slightly left at impact.

Hello Rayan. You may have a slightly strong grip, but it shouldn't be causing pulls unless overly strong. Sounds like you maybe adding a little shoulder spin, or flipping the hand over. Take a look at Moving the Fulcrum and Flip vs. Release Video.

Hello Charles. Yes. You said you "can reach 90 degrees when I cross my arms and turn. But when I have a club in hand I can’t seem to get to 90 degrees. And I’m not pushing my left arm." On my end, I took that as meaning when you have both arms on the club like a normal swing you can't reach 90 and you don't think you are pushing with the left. I apologize for taking that in error. My goal with the recommendation was to see if you could do a full shoulder rotation lead arm only with a club. This would help diagnose if it is a trail arm issue why you don't reach the full 90 degrees. And, if you couldn't reach it lead arm only with a club then dial it back to lead arm without a club to figure out the issue. If you add any component lead arm, lead arm club, or both arms with club and you still can't hit 90 degrees. You may need to check that you are loading into the trail glute properly (Weight Shift Video Part 2). And, put a lot of work into (Play The Best Golf Of Your Life in 6 weeks | 1 of 6 Video) making sure all your check points are correct as you add successive components.

Mark. I am still working through the drills in the number 4 video. However, I have listened and viewed ahead to the bonus video and find that the three swing faults identified in relation to the drills in the earlier videos affected me as well. Therefore, as I finish the 1000 reps for video number four I plan to work in Preliminay reps with the drills included in the bonus video as warm-ups to my # 4 rep routine. Do you have any warning? Also as someone else said in comments in the bonus video, I like this package approach you are using because I have had a lot of lessons and played a lot of golf and found the task of going through sequentially all of the videos too burdensome to think about. After I finish the series, I will check out the related videos you mention in each step to see what they add or if confused at a step I will check them before I proceed. I am about done with this series and have done the winter series and the 6 weeks to a perfect swing series. After a review of all and the related videos I will send videos and ask where to go from here. I expect you will help me focus in on key videos at that point. I have a sometimes playing partner who really needs to start over and for him I would recommend he go through the 5 step series in order, though he probably would resist. Thanks for the help. My scores are lower yet but going through the swing change is arduous and one ends up being in between old and new swing on the golf course. The tv golf commentaries say the pros go through the same thing.

I was under the impression that the initial move on the RST downswing (and other approaches) was a slight lateral move forward followed by a left hip turn. I found the video to be helpful because when I start the downswing with left hip rotation, for the first time I found my arms inherently dropping down without trying to pull the arms down. Is the left hip rotation a sudden burst movement to maximize speed (which sometimes triggers an over rotation/off balance rotation) or a gradual, deliberate move. At what point in the downswing should the weight be transferred to left heel? It seems that the sooner the weight is on the left heel the better (for stability purposes). I am still a bit confused about the precise sequence of motion. Will the left hip rotation without any other lateral shift inherently result in providing the appropriate sequencing in part since the downswing starting from the ground up and the rotation produces the necessary forward shift to the left? Hello Mark. The movement isn't solely lateral, nor rotational as you start down. It is a blend of the lead knee externally rotating, pull of the weight (lead hip adduction), and oblique pull to square the hips (Fixing Your Weight Transfer Video or Step 2 - Core Rotation). You should get approx 80% of your weight on the lead side before you enter the release phase of the swing. If you solely just rotate the hip from the top. It won't shift the weight for you. Usually, you would then spin the hip with the weight on the trail side.

An interesting comment on the drills above is the advice to keep the right foot from rotating, similar what Grout used to do to Nicklaus. My worst miss (2 to 4 times per round) is a weak push fade off the driver. It rarely happens with any other club, and I wonder if early rotation isn't the culprit?

Great video, Chris. At the top of the backswing, I am keeping the right glute engaged and keeping the knee pointed forward (laser beam and backswing videos). You mention the first part is left leg femur rotation before the hip turn. Is it at the point that I stop engaging the right glute? And is this more abrupt or gradual?

It seems like the avoidance of a closed hip slide in this video and the advice with the belt buckle drill, with trying to keep the hips closed during the downswing conflict each other. My biggest problem is early extension and the belt buckle drill seems to help. Should I be worrying about not trying to rotate my hips during the downswing?

Hello David. The belt buckle drill is designed for players that have a big hip spin problem from the top. However, you are still shifting your weight properly. To avoid the closed hip slide and shift the weight to the lead side. The lead knee has to externally rotate and stack over the lead ankle joint. By working on the belt buckle drill you aren't fighting the first initial move that takes place. Just taking care of hip spin and making sure the hips have a chance to decelerate.

This video addresses two things I am struggling with, shifting weight w/o hip opening, and early extension, spot on video Chris! I understand to keep the right butt cheek towards the chair at impact as a drill, but I find in the swing when my hips open up and my left leg straightens at impact it would be very strange to keep the right butt cheek unmoved. Rather it would be better to focus on keeping the left butt cheek against the chair? When watching Chuck's swing this is what I see, his left stays on the tush line and the right one as an opposing force comes forward slightly. Am I right or am I missing something?

Hello Johan. Most players lose the tush line by pushing with the trail side and cheek. By using the trail glute to stabilize the hips. It not only helps proper stalling of the body, but maintaing the tush. I agree. It would be hard at impact to keep the trail cheek against the chair. But, the feeling of that will help. It can leave and will start to. Just like the belt buckle drill. You feel that the hips won't move to exaggerate, but they need too and still will.

I saw Matt's post below but not sure the response answered the Q. There doesn't seem to be any video (beyond the 20 secs in this video) describing how to use the lead knee to trigger the shift back. I checked out Craig's response but those videos describe the hip bump as first move, not lead leg rotation to get weight to shift. Or is this simply a matter of two different approaches to get to same outcome--- getting back to lead side?

Hey David- we need to in a sense combine the two and involve a squat movement. What the squat does is rotates the lead leg and shift the weight into the lead leg. What should happen is a little bit of a lateral slide (NOT a ton though, just a "bump" into the lead leg) and then rotate with the left leg external rotation. Hope that helps.

Steven - when I externally rotate the left leg after the hip bump the upper body also rotates. I get to impact with the shoulders open. Should the shoulders follow the left leg rotation? If not what could cause that? Not properly getting to the left side in the first place perhaps? If the shoulders do in fact follow the left leg rotation, what then is the cause? Shoulders opening too soon in the downswing? One last question. At the limit of the left leg rotation will the leg naturally straighten (post up?). I notice it does straighten and accompanied by a sensation of pushing against the ground. Thanks.

Hey, Chris I followed along with the video series b/c I got the shanks. The series worked wonders for me. I started to hit the ball better than I ever have. I was w/n a few feet of my target line every time. I even felt comfortable enough to start trying to draw the ball, and I started to hit a draw for the first time ever! However, while trying to get good at hitting a draw, I got the shanks again. It's beyond frustrating. Do I need to start completely over again? I tried to perform the first 2 videos of the series, and I shanked those half the time. Any suggestions?

Hey Cody, sounds like a classic case of either trying to pull the arm down from the top really hard to help rotate the clubface more or, you getting the club coming too far from the inside. What does it look like on camera from hitting it awesome to hitting it back into the bad word?

Check out trace the plane line video and make sure that you are keeping your hips back and your tilt to your spine is not drastic at impact.

Thanks Chris. I have the opposite problem (outside in) when I hit pure its a baby fade, when i don't it's shank. This happens no matter how much or little speed I'm putting into the swing. My latest review pointed out that from a DTL view the clubshaft was outside my hands just passed the release point in the hitting area

So, if I gave this correctly, I'm keeping my trail foot, right foot, on the ground on the downswing while having the internal femur rotation to bring my hips to neutral position and allowing my shoulders/arms to fire through. Is that right?

Chris: I just had my right knee replaced. Still doing knee rehab. When in the videos, does the right knee start to turn. When you say don't lift the right foot after impact? I must be doing something wrong. Because if I keep my foot down then my knee starts hurting on both sides. Thanks Then it begins swelling.

Hey RI -- You can allow the right leg/foot to become more relaxed to make sure it has it's natural mobility. We want the club to pull us up into a finish post impact, and chances are you are trying to over cook this move and causing stress on your knee.

I tend to get confused on the problem of early extension versus the need to post up on the left leg at impact. Can you explain how to properly post up at impact without contributing to early extension. Thanks.

Hello Dave. When you post up you are pulling leverage from the ground. The lead oblique opens the hips, but the lead hip is going behind you. Pulling will allow the trail side to follow. If you push with the trail hip the hips will go towards the ball. Take a look at Losing the Tush Line and Perfecting Lower Body Stability.

Chris: Again, your videos are epic. Thank you. Would it be safe to say: 1. The father the hands are from the left knee at the start of the downswing, the farther one will hit the ball? 2. As you say the right foot/knee acts as a "brake" on the downswing to prevent hip over-roation, does the left knee act as a "brake" in the backswing to also prevent over-rotation?

Hello Rob. Not necessarily. I wouldn't use the distance of the hands from the lead knee as a key determinant on your distance. Yes, the lead knee staying in a more stable position going back helps with over rotation.

Thank u again for a great work! Highly appreciated. I just have a quick question, Chris: i worked very hard at home on my lower body and It's very stable during my backswing (also in my transition, which is a problem) so my left knee at the top of the swing is almost in neutral. I find quite difficult to interally rotate my lead femur some extra degrees and for this reason my weight shift is not properly done. Any suggestion is always more than welcome. Thank u again, Chris!

Hello Nacho. If the lead knee is near neutral it won't have to travel that far. Only a little will be necessary for you. Take a look at Should You Splay Your Feet at Address. You might need a little to help.

Hi there. Ive been on RST for almost a year now and I still learn something new every week. Up until now I was under the impression that we should have a closed hip slide. Ie in the Downsing video and the sitting into the left side it appears as if Chuck first sits left, (stompdrill) and then only externally rotates the left leg while extending the left leg. Is there a video with more information on opening the hips and moving the left knee to shift the weight. I think this might a key to being more consistent.

Chris: If the left knee laser drill keeps the left knee essentially where it was at address, is the external rotation of the lead thigh a "feel" or an actual necessary motion in addition to the left knee laser concept. Explained differently, the right "cheek" stays against the lawn chair and the external rotation of the left thigh moves the left "cheek" against the lawn chair as well?

Thank you, Craig.I understand what you say but Weight Shift Part 3 shows zero external rotation of Al Consoli's lead knee on the downswing or do I just not see it? To me, external rotation results in a distinct separation of the knees or movement of the lead knee away from the trail knee at the start of the downswing.

Hello Rob. It will move a little away from the trail knee. But, the goal isn't to try and create a massive separation. If you start about 5 minutes into the How to Swing from the Ground Up Video. As Chuck stomps you can a slight motion where the lead knee rotates towards the target to get stacked over the ankle joint allowing him to post up.

Chris, I highly recommend that this series be added to the full swing series. The way the full swing series is arranged is that you learn the swing starting from set up, to impact. So by the time you "graduate" and practice by hitting balls, you have to move through moves 1, 2, and 3 in their entirety before you even strike the ball---that's a lot that you have to get right to have a successful ball strike. THIS series starts with impact and moves back, piece by piece, so you can gradually stack small pieces of the swing. Breaking up the swing into these smaller, built up pieces has helped me isolate two faults that were difficult to see when doing full swings, even when doing them slowly and on camera. There is no other video or set of videos in the full swing series that builds (stacks) like this one. The 9-to-3 drill doesn't count because it doesn't stack. I would still have students go through the full swing series as they are arranged now so they learn the theory of the set up and each move. But because, as Chuck says, at the end of the day, it's all about impact, I would add this series at the end. I would also recommend adding a 5th video to the series to take the club all they way to the end of move 2.

From the bonus video have realised that I have been losing my axis tilt and will try working on improving it with the help of a chair. a little off topic from this series but still an issue--> can you help me reconcile: in Chuck's takeaway videos, he shows one drill with the club in the belly button at address to get the concept of rotation. on the other hand, when I see Chris from face on, it looks like you turn the left shoulder down more than the belly button drill would have. is there a more correct way? I feel to much left oblique side bend if I try to rotate the left shoulder down which I why I have though the belly button drill was more on line to what I am to be doing. thx

Hey Jason, my shoulder rotation might be a fraction on the steep side but I work to make sure the shoulder line is rotating perpendicular to the spine as it is supposed to do. That would give you the appearance the lead shoulder going down as the right shoulder is pulled behind the head.

Chris, the problem I am having is when I shift my weight I loose my axis tilt and my right shoulder goes out towards the ball and forward and I loose my lag and have no snap at impact.. I have been trying to emphasize the post up which stretches my lead side and bends my trail side which helps keep my right shoulder back. Do you think I'm on the right track to solve the right shoulder problem. Also, when I do this I feel a kind of vertical power not just rotary power. Thanks

Sounds like you need to try to keep the shoulders more wound in transition but it also sounds like you are on the right track. I am not sure what you mean when you say you lose axis tilt when you shift? Do you mean you spine leans more towards the target when making this shift?
