I’ve really been struggling lately.

I’ve really been struggling lately. I still have a weak slice and I can’t seem to square the face up. I’m about 800 reps in since my latest swing review from Chris. I feel like I’m getting nowhere and I’m just not “getting it” or getting the feeling I’m suppose to feel. I’ve never had this problem this bad and I’m wondering if all the work I’ve done over the winter has just exposed my current weakness. Is there anything else I’m missing here Chris? Or is it simply that I cannot release properly? The good thing is whatever I’ve built right now is incredibly consistent...albeit in a not so good way lol. Just some feedback. 1. When I do the Vijay drill, I can barely even draw the ball left-hand only. Like...maybe 30-40% I can get to draw without the right hand. I remember in the video Chuck saying “you’ll draw the ball immediately after taking the right hand off”. That’s not happening for me. 2. Even swinging hip to hip I can’t seem to draw it. 3. Today I focused on the Axiom drill and it improved a bit, but still wasn’t great. 4. My divots are really deep. I’m not sweeping the grass but rather I’m taking weird deep divots. This includes left hand only. 5. When I get to the course (or any full shot) I’m slapping the ball with a weak slice. Every time. I don’t know if I’ve hit a ball left this entire year hahah. Usually when I get to the 500-700 mark on new changes I start to get it. I’m 800 in and I feel as lost as ever. I’m attaching me doing the Vijay drill (letting the right hand come off during impact). Am I doing this drill correctly? And words of encouragement to keep going? I’m 14k reps in and my swing is probably the worst it’s ever been. The other day I didn’t even break 90. I feel like if I can “get” this last part I’m on the way to some good ball striking. Like you said Chris, my swing is good. But I’m just confused as to how I can have a good swing but still produce such a poor result. Thanks for everything! Brandon

Brandon, Looking at the video from face on a few things to note that are REALLY important when working on a drill of this nature... 1. You ball position is too far back (generally will have the path more right and the face more open) 2. Your grip is really weak in both hands (this will make it harder to square the face without having to work really hard) 3. You don't have a lot of secondary axis tilt at impact (this can steepen the angle of attack) 4. Double check the left thumb is not pushing on the shaft on the way down If you work on the above and do not see any sort of immediate change on how you are hitting the ball both from a contact and directional standpoint, then post up the results of the swings and let us all take a look. Remember, the key is to know where you are at in the process. If you are working on a drill of this nature, then we are probably good with the rest of your movements...So YES your swing is good. Your release (the hardest part of the swing) is a little out of sorts. Sorry to hear you are struggling with the hitting area and your game so much. Obviously I do not take these sorts of notes from our students very lightly, as this is my job to help students of the game. If you'd like to have a different instructor help you moving forward, please let me know and I will do what I can to get you any further assistance. The big thing to remember is to keep yourself disciplined and work on the most impactful thing that your swing needs to hit the ball better and more consistently.
Hi Brandon, I notice no axis tilt at set up and when you start your swing it looks a bit weird on the takeaway. When starting your swing, (takeaway), you seem to slightly rotate the hips open towards the target whilst slightly moving the top portion of your body laterally away from target and similtaneouosly your trail knee actually slightly increases in flex. The trunk does not seem to very loaded at the top of the swing, hips haven't turned much and shoulder turn is far from complete. Chris has made some excellent points and I hope my observations may add some further context with the best of intentions.
My suggestion would be to try and focus on the process, while trying not to get too focused on the time and the number of reps. And also try to not be to focused on the desired outcome. This is of course not easy. But you are trying to build a physical skill, your body and brain does not care that you want to achieve a certain result and that you want to do it in a certain period of time. To me it seems the further I progress the more lost I can feel when I hit obstacles. It can go rather quickly from feeling great to feeling extremely off. But I know that dedicated practice will get me back. I think that in the Talent Code Daniel Coyle says that frustration is part of the process. Think it has do with that for practice to be as efficient as possible you have to be on your limit. Hang in there!
