Anthony another quick question regarding my recent swing review as I’m a bit.

Hi Anthony another quick question regarding my recent swing review as I’m a bit confused of when to add my arms to the backswing and downswing. I’ve been practising today and I’ve been working on starting the backswing with my right scapula and the using my arms to finish the job and take my arms to the top of my swing , I also like to push with my left thumb pushing it back towards my forearm keeping my left arm straight and helping me to hold lag on the downswing. I’m starting to keep my arms more in front of me which takes the load out of my shoulders and I start to feel my left lat muscle load instead. From there I switch my weight to my left and there is a very slight pull with the left arm it’s like a back hand tennis shot definitely not starting with pulling the club to start the swing but it’s still there the sensation feels like arms are behind or sometimes I have the sensation that I bring down the arms as slow as I can and then the lag catches me and the club releases and pulls me through that method is harder than the slight pull with the left hand. I have just watched the refining the backswing video which I think could work for me but would it activate mr arms? How does that sound because I kinda don’t know what to do with arms as no arms as no arms at all don’t seem right.

Hey Ronald, First step in the process is the DEAD drill. Getting your legs and core more activated in the swing. We need to become more aware of the bigger muscles first. You are describing too much tension in your arms in the loading and unloading phase. We do not try to "hold" lag, lag is a bi-product of good sequencing. When you are using your arms to manipulate lag, you are creating tension in the arms, and therefore taking focus off the bigger muscles. Think of throwing a ball. How much tension to you keep in your hands and arms once you have the ball in your hand? Your arms stay soft and supple and respond to your sequencing of stepping into your throw and using the legs as a brake which snaps your arm into a powerful throw.
