Your chipping strategy is crucial for helping you save par and employs my Compass Drill from my putting series.

We all miss greens, it's a fact of life. But it's what you do and how you do it that dictates whether or not the ugly bogeyman shows up on your score card. Using my Compass Drill from putting strategy video, you can simply THINK your way to lower scores just by employing that strategy to your chipping.

You'll see in this video how pros think their way around a golf course to save par more often, even though it may look like they made a mistake. This little known strategy known only to the best players will help you save 3-5 shots a round just from missed approach shots. You'll no longer be worrying about whether or not you're going to save par, you'll be thinking about how easy it will be to save par when you put the ball in the correct quadrant.

Golf is a numbers game and my Compass Drill gives you the best chance of saving par more often than not and plays the statistics game. You'll be playing much smarter golf, making fewer dumb mistakes, and most important - shooting lower scores.

Why don’t you use left hand low for chipping?

Hello William. Some players do chip that way. But, more often than not students say they lose a lot of touch and feel around the green. Nevertheless, some have success with it.

do I want to be using a left hand strong grip and hammering down at the golf ball the right hand just goes along with the ride as I turn thru with lower body knees have a little flex to the motion

Hello Richard. Some players will weaken the grip for feel. Not necessary though. Take a look at How to Chip a Golf ball - Proper Setup and Master the Golf Chipping Stroke. Both will help you setup properly and explain the motion with the lead hand. The trail will be very quiet for the basic chip.

so are you using your sand wedge instead of a pitching wedge on a 20 yard chip do I want my all running 2/3 or 1/3

Hello Richard. You want more ground time than air time. I suggest getting comfortable with both wedges. Each wedge will give you a different characteristic of run and flight. From a fairly good, or easy lie with a lot of green to cover. I prefer the pitching wedge because I don't have to make a large move to pop it in the air and get a good roll out of it. However, on shorter shots the sand wedge provides me the same small move with less carry and run out.

I struggle with the yips in chipping. What do you think about using a left hand low grip in chipping?

Hello Chuck. I have seen that method used before. I have personally never tried it. I wouldn't feel too comfortable giving you a lot of feedback. However, experiment on the practice green. If you struggle with yipping short chips. It might be a way to get you over the hump.

Chuck, in this quadrant drill why do we not think of the SE quad (up hill R to L) and the SW quad (up hill L to R) equally?

Generally speaking left to right putts are more difficult for right handed golfers. Most golfers make far more putts that break into them, ie right to left than away from them statistically speaking. A lot of it has to do with alignment as they tend to not play enough break on left to right putts.
