Chuck, I have been watching a lot of of the videos you have been posting on Instagram, with this idea that the shoulders need to tilt while the hips open. You appear to be going into much greater detail in the Instagram posts on that topic than what appears to be covered here in any of the GOAT code videos, unless I have missed something. Will the content from those Instagram videos be posted on the members webpage anytime soon? It appears that you are doing an extended lesson with a student and it would be a boon to be able to watch the whole lesson from beginning to end. If not, will you be posting any new member videos here in the future diving into more detail on the idea of side bend and shoulder tilt in the downswing?

Great! The particular problem that I'm having is this: when I pivot on my trail leg to get my hips open, my shoulders want to turn with my core rather than tilt at a 45 degree angle into side bend... I am not sure if this is a flexibility issue or just a matter of me doing it incorrectly… I'm hoping that the new video has some treatment of this topic. If not, is there something you can recommend for me?

This new video should help as it sounds like you are loading up to push too hard off the trail leg. You need to feel that you are loading up your lead hip more which this new video covers

Chuck I think this is one of your best video to date, they’re all great but this one really stood out for me. I played Saturday after 3 weeks off and I just focused on this backswing move. I hit my driver the better than I have for some time. However I was inconsistent with my iron play and need to work on this with Craig.

Thank you Richard! I aim to beat it with the new one being released this week on the downswing!

Chuck, we have a lot in common: two first names, same age and we both have done too many spontaneous gravity checks on two wheeled rockets resulting in spinal fusions. I have the same fusion as Tiger, L5-S1. My rotation to the right is fine but I have limited mobility to the left. Do you think this movement is safe for me too?

Yes, there's really not that much turning when done correctly. The next video I'm releasing on the downswing will talk about this

Chuck: I’ve been working on this drill “GOAT Backswing,” which is so helpful. When I get my rt shoulder behind my neck, my hands “seem” so be too far behind me. I’m trying to get higher hands. I’ll practice later and send you a video. Any suggestions without seeing me first? Something I can try in the mirror and then send it to you?

If your hands are getting deep, this is most commonly caused by pushing the club back with the lead arm and lead side of body which makes it tough to get into side bend. Imagine you are picking the club up with the trail hand to throw the clubhead at the ball and you'll see it doesn't make much sense to swing the club deep around behind you

Another question please, In the 1.4 set-up video , the instruction is for the lead side to retract in the shoulder socket, and the trail side is slightly protracted. Are both sides retracted the same amount however the trial side appears lower from taking the grip? I'm a bit confused relating to this video and the right shoulder role/feel in the backswing...

Chuck
No they are not the same because of the grip. The lead shoulder will be more retracted than the trail

Hi Chuck, Love your shirt, very nice "out of the box" thinking. For me it gave a great visual what you also explain to us. Looking foward to the downswing video with the same shirt! Friendly greetings, Marcel

I thought recalled in one video you wanted a little curvature in the setup but I probably was interpreting that wrong. One question, I was trying to really focus on that shoulder blade to be going up to get that extension, and you haven't really done it consistently and focusing hard on it, do you feel like you are getting a workout on that those muscles and lats when getting to the end of backswing to hold it?

Hi Matt Re: I thought recalled in one video you wanted a little curvature in the setup but I probably was interpreting that wrong. I still think this is the case - however, we don’t try to maintain this ‘flat back’, but rather allow the lower back to go into lordosis, which allows the thoracic/upper back go into extension. This is what I have been trying to do/feel. I’m sure Chuck will correct me if I’m wrong.

in the real swing that should happen so fast that it needs to be fluid and relaxed, not like a workout

I tend to mean when going slow to try and focus on the feeling of the shoulder blade versus just shrugging or having the rounded shoulders.

Sure, if you're going slow it will feel very different and more like an exercise

This is the GOAT of golf instruction. Other instructors from Percy Boomer to Martin Hall to Adam Bazelgette have touched on these movement pattern ideas. But you have completed the puzzle. Wonderfully creative and clear "bare bones" explanation. Million Thanks Mr. Quinton! IMHO this is the greatest contribution to golf instruction since Ben's 5 Fundamentals.

Chuck, Another GEM of NEW GOAT instruction! This latest video is Genius, SIMPLY GENIUS!!! This is the best explanation I've ever heard on how to get into the proper backswing position to LOAD for EFFORTLESS POWER. The skeleton explanation of how to move your spine properly around your COG coupled with the shadow top down view provides the exact sequence that needs to take place that is very easy to follow. I have to admit I didn't completely understand how to use extension and side bend combined. It now makes total sense how to properly move and load in a very balanced and powerful way! I have never come across any other golf swing instruction as AWESOME as the GOAT Code! Your instruction is so easy to watch, learn and immediately begin to put into our golf practice and play. Simply AMAZING!!!

Hi, Chuck. Great explanation on how to properly turn/rotate. I had instant success trying it out today. However, I am bit confused how you lateral load / shift to the trail side without moving to the right in the shadow drill? If rotating around your CG wouldn’t that keep you from shifting laterally in the take away? Thanks, Eric

Chuck
The lateral shift if you’re going to have one generally happens before the Takeaway really even begins and then you can focus on rotating around your COG from there

I know you are describing the upper body movements here in this video, but I struggle to combined everything that you are describing here with pivoting off the right foot as per the squished the bug video. Do you have a recommendation on how to combined and blend it all together?

I've just practiced this in the living room but the side bend part seems to push your arms out into the perfect takeaway/backswing position. I really don't have to do anything with the arms besides folding the right arm to complete the swing. This might be the simplest way to complete a full shoulder turn that I have seen. I have way more tilt at the top with my right shoulder much higher than the left. I'm excited to keep working on this. Thanks Chuck!

Amazing video! Amazing! Ok--not the 1st time I've said that after viewing one of your new vids on the site. You are really creating an amazing blueprint for how to get it done! I've always thought that getting the right dynamics in the bswing was a puzzle that I just wasn't solving. I realize that my upperbody was in flexion and I wanted to move into extension but just couldn't make it happen. I also wanted to feel like my trailside was higher at the top of the swing. I now see how a change in setup with the scaps engaged can make that happen. Some great things to work on as Spring is just around the corner in the Northeast! Thanks!

Thanks Dennis! The scapula on the trail side is such an important part of the golf swing. I don’t think it can be overstated.

Hi I’m looking for some clarification/help. First of all - I’ve said before….I am loving the journey I am on with the goat code…and I am almost finishing the putting and about to start the chipping section. I watched this because I definitely have issues in my backswing and the faults you mention in this video - that is me. My question: in my set up I have been engaging my core, to flatten my lumber spine and I have been trying to maintain this angle throughout the swing - but this video suggests I should allow my lower back to go into lordosis during the backswing. Am I understanding this correctly: in that we start with the flat lower back (For lack of a better phrase) and during the back swing, allow it to go into lordosis as a result of the side bend and extension? Thanks
February 28, 2025
64x64
Chuck
Yes you must go into extension

Thank you (again). I’ve been deliberately trying to keep my lower back flat - so not going into lordosis/extension - until now. This might be (another) game changer for me.
