Modern driver head design is an exact science with powerful CAD software being used by every manufacturer these days. With these powerful software applications, the center of gravity (COG) can be moved up and down, forward and back to dramatically alter the performance of a golf club. This video focuses on the COG because it impacts where the ball should be struck on the face for maximum performance.

  • Center of gravity (COG) imparts maximum energy transfer, minimum twisting, and less spin than below COG
  • Find and mark COG (not the center of the face) by balancing the driver head on a point
  • Use a loft/lie gauge to determine loft at the COG (generally greater than loft stamped on the club)
  • The point of max COR is the true center of the face - this point imparts greater spin than the COG
  • The higher your swing speed, the more detrimental spin is to your overall distance
  • Reduced spin at the COG more than compensates for the slight loss of ball speed from hitting above the point of max COR

There was no mention of the sweet spot here.

Hello Asle. Look 2 videos above in the menu for discussion of sweet spot. Most drivers have a sweet spot not located where the manufacturer marked it.

I am a couple weeks into RST, and I have an entry level set of top flite clubs that are probably 8+ years old. With a constantly evolving and improving swing, that is getting more in line with RST, I am nervous and unsure about what to do as far as club fitting. My current clubs seem to be a decent length for me at the moment, but as a low skill player, I’m not very informed and I’m not sure if my next club fitting move would be getting my current clubs fitted just to make my current playing more ideal for the moment, OR if I should get brand new clubs that I get fitted for, or even something else that I haven’t considered. What do you guys recommend as far as clubs/club fitting as time goes on with RST?

Hello Jeremy. I would recommend waiting until you become more proficient with the swing movements. The problem with getting fit or new clubs on the earlier side is the swing dynamics will change. Your attack angle, speed, setup length, lie, etc. will all change as your fundamentals improve. in the beginning, no need to change the clubs unless they are overly long which having them cut down is a cheaper and simple fix.

Are there any effects (slice for instance) if the ball is hit rigth or left to te COG?

Hello Antonio. Yes, strikes like that can effect the curvature. But, more importantly hurts energy transfer.

Hi, just restating the demand for a detail video on shafts for your club. Also, does grip have any importance or is it as long as it feels sticky? I ask about grips because I noticed a lot more marketing behind it. Got into golf 3 years ago and I failed tip #10, just bought a driver off the shelf. A detailed video on custom fitting like Cornelius mentioned below would be highly appreciated. Thanks!

Very informative! A video relating to the various ball compressions and those most suitable for the different swing speeds, would be most appreciated.

Hi. I watched the videos and you talk a lot about club heads and nothing about the shaft. Why? I always heard that the shaft is everything when it comes to specs.

Hello Jacques. Yes, the shaft has a great deal to do with specs. I will let the team know that discussion of the shaft is a topic wanting to be covered.

In higher swing speed players, would a 430cc driver head make a bigger difference than a different shaft in lowering then spin rate?

Hello Brandon. Not really. Too many factors with launch angle, angle of attack, and etc.

Excellent video! I join the others members asking for a shaft fitting detailed video as good as this one. We will learn and make better decision that cost lots of many!! You can't argue against a salesman in a store or fitting session if you don't know the theory. So, please Chuck, consider a shaft video for the future!!

I am in the process of re- shafting my titleist 904 driver 9.5 loft. I typically average 101-103mph club head speed. I want to know if you have any drills to increase club head speed.

Hello Pino. Increase Swing Speed by Hip Deceleration in the Advanced Downswing Section. Sledgehammer Video and the Lag and Speed Drills same section.

Hitting it on the Center of Gravity you should hit it further with less spin, even though it is higher on the club face due to the gear effect? Also I noticed that Chuck did not address shafts. I have friends that have spent hundreds of dollars on shaft fittings. Would that help you Bomb Your Driver?

Hitting it on the COG will give you the maximum effect on the ball, even if its higher on the face. Shafts are very important for modern day equipment. They can effect ball speed, launch angle and spin. The proper shaft could have a big difference on bombing your driver.

Can you add a video summary of custom fitting? Why it's not a good idea to buy off the shelf drivers with preset shafts, etc? Advices on how to get best custom fitted?

I also would be very interested in this. I know next to nothing about club fitting, let alone when the best time to get fitted would be, considering my swing is progressively improving through RST

Hello Jeremy. Thanks for the input. Right now with you being so new to the game. I wouldn't worry much until you aren't thinking about the changes to your swing. Don't buy new stick's will correcting movement patterns.
