Do you need to do 3000 rippers before you progress. Is the ripper a bonus to full around with before adding the lead hand drills?

Yes, it's more of a bonus for those that want to learn the shot.

This is a shot I would really like to have, and it foxes me completely! In this video you give concise instructions as to how to play it, and your results are clearly evident. But when I try, and believe me I’ve tried hard and often, I cannot achieve the desired result. Instead my shots go higher and shorter. How do you manage a low ball flight despite opening the club so much Chuck? Could you please provide additional clarification regarding the comment “angle of attack and and how shallow of a bottom of a swing arc you create by reducing wrist set” in your answer to the related question from Piet below. Thanks, Gordon

You're likely simply setting your wrists too much. Practice with a really short stroke first, like hitting it a foot and slide the blade under the ball with minimal to no wrist set or release. That will change the AoA

Piet, Question about the mechanics. Watching the bunker play in the British Open, players opened the clubface quite a bit and came out almost vertical. What is the difference with the open clubface playing the ripper an d the ball flying much lower instead?

It’s mostly angle of attack and and how shallow of a bottom of a swing arc you create by reducing wrist set. You can’t really compare this to a bunker shot since you don’t actually make contact with the ball and you’re moving sand in a bunker

Compared to your ball flight and spin in this video, what might I expect for ball performance from a 54° sand wedge with 13° bounce? It’s the most lofted club I have right now. Should I be looking to add a 58 with 8-10 bounce?

You definitely need a more lofted club, 58 minimum, 60 would be better. That's a ton of bounce and very little loft which would make this shot not nearly as effective.

This is still done with Axiom in mind correct ?

You can, they are related but that was really helping you shallow the club, whereas that's not needed here.

When I open the club face, because of the high bounce of the club, my club bounces of the turf (tight lies) and catch the ball thin. How do we address this

How much bounce do you have on your 60? If you have 8* or less you should be fine depending on the grind, but if you have more and are playing on tight lies you won't be able to open the face as much.

Thanks Chuck. My 60 wedge had 10 degree bounce. I am getting a new one with 6 deg bounce which should solve my issue.

When I practice these with my Lob wedge, they are going quite a bit higher than the standard chip. I am trying to keep everything the same -- just opening the face. What might be causing this? Thanks!

Ahhh, it's your grip! WAY too weak and extended at setup.

Thanks Chuck! Back into the garage to work on this. I never realized how weak my grip was until I started going through the GOAT series.
