What should you be looking for to see how you're improving from one practice session to the next? Craig shows you what to check and how much progress you should achieve from one day to the next.
Hello everyone RST swing instructor Craig Morrow here and today what I want to do on my day one versus day two recap is I want to talk about my finished position as you know you're going to be going down your checklist looking at your checkpoints after you make the strike and the follow-through or the finish position is something that I use every day to gather valuable information it it doesn't tell me everything but it can give me a little bit of a window of what happened either correctly or incorrectly during the swing as you'll see on the left hand side I have day one on the right hand side day two and so let's kind of talk about this from the ground up the first thing that I'm sure that you'll notice is that my trail foot is rolled onto the instep on day one and on day two it's not as aggressive now my weight still on the instep right here but I'm not as aggressive with the pushing off my trail foot you'll see the byproducts of that as we start to work our way up look at my lead knee and my lead hip on day two they're starting to become much more stacked compared to the slidey position that I had in day one now this doesn't mean that I'm not getting off my trail foot I'm just not pushing so hard which is allowing me to stay in much more of a stacked position as we continue to work our way up from the hip I want you to take a look at my shoulders the second day of practice I had a much easier time stopping maintaining that impact position feel through the strike as I was pushing just a little bit too much with my trail side on day one I felt that I needed to catch up with my trail hand and as I started to catch up with my trail hand I would add a little bit more shoulder spin these two things is where we saw on day one that sometimes I'd hit it a little bit fat or sometimes I'd hit a little bit thin but on day two starting to delete the excessive push it was much easier for me to calm down my shoulders and stay in the shot and you'll notice a couple little miniature byproducts look at my glove hand on both swings you can see a lot more of my glove on this side versus the left hand side because right now we're not focused on having a big drawn -out powerful release trying to maintain that lead wrist and bowed position and you'll see that my face has much more rotation on the left hand side versus the right hand side it's much easier for me to maintain that impact position because my hips clearing back behind me better and with that I'm starting to get a better deceleration instead of kind of still accelerating through the shot I'm able to get my hip work done get my lead wrist into impact and not feel like I have to chase it I know some players at home feel like oh I've got it the club's never gonna get there and they feel like they have to keep chasing it well the cleaner post up on the right hand side of the screen has allowed me to really kind of calm some of the upper half items down really start to turn off the shoulders a little bit more turn off a little bit excessive trail hand so there's not a lot of information there hasn't been a ton of change to this point we can see some improvement but what I want you to do as you're progressing on your checkpoints make sure you're going about it from the ground up that you're kind of noticing some of these sometimes can be a little bit nitpicky but that you're kind of noticing these items how much is your trail foot really rolling on to the instep how stacked are the hip knee and ankle joint how are your shoulders doing are your shoulders ending up wide open or are they still relatively straight with your club right here how's the club face are you tending to flip it over can we still see a little bit of glove hand here because our focus is on impact so make sure as you're going through your checklist look at this finish position you can you know compare to your prior swings as I'm doing here or just really analyze what's going on from the ground up and typically that's the way that I look at swings because that's where I'm going to start to see problems first
