Ready to chip like a tour pro? Rip the cover off the ball and make those impossible spinning chip shots look easy!

once you've got this basic chipping stroke pattern down where you can be really consistent and your body movements are matching what you're seeing on the screen with the details that i've given you and what you see from tiger now you want to start having a little bit of fun with it with both hands on there we can hit that two-handed ripper and the two -handed ripper is no different than what you learned in the first part with the one hand all you now have to have is the left hand learning how to help out with that the biggest thing that you're going to do with the lead hand is it needs to be able to release this is key because you need that club face to be able to work under instead of working around like this if you're working the club face under you're keeping loft through the strike and that is super important to be able to hit this shot and what you're going to use now with the left hand is allowing it to break down and allowing it to help you swing a little bit more left and what i mean by that from face on it's kind of easier to see this same thing for the basic chipping stroke everything's the same you're going to start to be able to play with ball position a little bit but you're going to have your weight on your lead side more and then as you're going back what you want to be able to do is feel the club almost wiping across the ball diagonally to the left and the lead side will help with that and it's going to help you maintain more loft as you take the club through the strike the other thing that you can start to play with now that you have both hands on there is you can start to open the face more and as you begin to open the face it's going to allow you to come through with even more loft and then you can start hitting some really crazy nippy shots that bite really quick and obviously the further you hit it though you know the more that you're going to have speed with it so you can start putting more and more spin on there so what you want to start getting used to is the feeling of as you're going back starting to open the face with both hands and that's going to get that the leading edge instead of matching the spine angle more upright and then as you start to come through you want to feel like you're releasing like this and that's going to get the club face open that's going to get you more loft and then you're working it around to swing left and that's what's going to put a lot of side spin and cut spin on the ball so still feeling everything exactly the same but you're going to start to get the hands to work like this that's what you want to feel now we don't want to be very handsy with this at first as you learned from the uh basic the one-handed uh ripper shot there's really you don't need a lot of hand action but once both hands are on there you're going to start to be able to play with it a little bit more and have a little bit more spin on the ball than you could before so let me get set up here so i'm going to have the ball more on my front of my instead of having the ball off my back big toe which again you can play that shot i'm going to start to move it up just a little bit once i have both hands on there because that's going to help balance out the bottom of my swing arc now that both hands are on there when you have just your trail hand on there it's going to be a lot more typical for the club to bottom out a little bit back as you start moving with both hands it's going to move your bottom of your swing arc a little bit more forward and then as i go back i'm going to open it just a little bit and then i'm going to swing left and hold that loft on that club face so i'm going to hit just a really short one here and we'll get the seat get to see how much spin i'm going to put on it so i'm going to open the face the face is pointing you know white well to the right my stance is going to be a smidge open i don't like to play too open because i am swinging more left it's the ball wants to kind of come out a little bit left obviously the club face angle is going to balance that out but you will find that you don't need to set up as open as you might think because as you're swinging left the path is going to help move the starting line a little bit more left so you can play with square to a little bit open to get the the basics of this shot so now setting up ball off my front toe face open i'm going to open a little bit going back and a really low little cut spin there so now when you look at it from face on all i did there is i'm letting this wrist start to rehinge a little bit on the other side that's helping me maintain loft through the shot that's all you have to feel it's the only difference between what we did before where have it all of our back toe and trail hand only holding that face open now you can see as i come through that lead wrist needs to be able to break down a little bit to maintain that loft on there and you've got that two-handed cutter shot that's super fun to hit

Hi Chuck and Craig. Working on the ripper here, I feel like I’m hitting the check points, but the ball isn’t really shooting out low or with extra spin. Is it time for a new wedge, or is there something obvious that I’m not doing? Thank you

Hello Hyogo. Looks like your trail hand stays on top a bit too much going back. You need the feel more in your trail the opening of the face and shape of swing better to utilize. Face is open back but trail stays on top limiting the movement.

Hi Craig, This was decent, but not the one hop and check action I’m looking for. Honestly struggling to get this one correctly. Do you notice anything?

With both hands on the club now I think you need more the under motion. Go to around the 2:20 times stamp.

Hi Craig, I think I was over complicating things. How’s that look?

There ya go. That was pretty salty right there. It's the problem with the spinner. There are mechanics but very feel based. It's a movement and not a positional shot. Loved the conviction thru impact.

Thx Craig for the feedback. It seems like the less I try to involve the hands, the better it gets. The real good ones, I can physically feel the club sliding under and spinning the ball. But I can see how much you need club face awareness to pull it off, so it makes sense why it’s part of the program.

Correct. This starts to provide the awareness you need. Have to get that feedback to start connecting the dots.

Standard chip vs Sauce. Time to move onto longer pitch shots.

Looking good. I think the only thing I could complain about would be the standard chip make sure the arms don't get too loose. The trail arm you want to stay stable and shy away from too wobbly/loose.

What am I looking for when my 60 or 54 degrees hits and rolls out.

Hello David. If your ball is rolling out you may be rolling the face over instead of sliding under to grab more grooves for spin.

I’ve always chipped the way Chuck demonstrates by keeping the face open. I will look at little closer at it. What Chuck doesn’t say, unless I missed it, where is his landing target-say, with the 60 degree. Is it right at the hole?

Landing target was pretty much right at the hole. But, you will have to gauge speed of greens/firmness. Ball position the big toe trail foot.

Hi Chuck, After I put some effort into the normal chip stroke, I have produced very consistent results. However, with the ripper, it sometimes spins or goes high in the air. It would be awesome if you could give me any pointers on how I can consistently rip the ball. Best wishes, Jayden.

Hello Jayden. Looks like you need it a bit more open at setup (club). You need to develop the feel in the wrists motion. Looks pretty stiff. Let the face open up a bit more as you take it back.

Hi Chuck, I'm using a 60-degree lob wedge and working on the ripper shot. I’m opening the clubface and trying to chip it while keeping my wrists quiet—no loading or cocking—to get the ball rolling like a chip. As I descend, I’m focusing on more action with my lead arm. However, my shots are launching too high and not running or stopping the way they do in your videos. Any idea what I might be doing wrong? Thanks! Alex

Hello, Becaise in the video you said to get the lead arm to be more wristy and help keep it open. But now the ball is going very high

The wrists dont do much at all on this shot it is the same as the regular shot just with an open face

Hey chuck, how should the grip pressure be with each the right and the left hand?

You want to hold the club firm enough to feel you have control without locking up the wrists. I tend to hold it slightly more firm with my trail hand than lead hand.

Hi Chuck Did my 500+ reps. Kept my right foot behind on purpose, to have all my weight on left one. How is it? Thanks

This needs to be a little more dynamic and you got it. By that I mean your head will move forward as will your hips slightly during the backswing because we don't have time to shift. Then you will shift even a little further in the downswing. You can see your left leg/hip stays pretty much in place throughout. Once you shift more, you will move the low point further forward and get more crisp contact.

Hey Chuck! Does this hand action work for bunker shots? Have you thought about adding a “GOAT bunker video” in the program? Bunkers are my worst nightmare lol.

Yep, very much the same move. I have thought about adding it in, probably will in the future

Great stuff as always Chuck! My question is: is this shot probable with a high bounce wedge? I play a 60/12 wedge. (Conditions in the NE are rarely firm) Thank you for all your hard work!

You're welcome! If you've got a soft enough lie where the club won't bounce back into the ball you could play it the same way.

You do generate a lot of spin, yet not that much height, like a flop shot would produce. What loft is the wedge and with the face open the apparent loft at impact? I’m still inclined to chip those with a delofted 7 iron, if I have enough room for a proper run out, which is usually 1 to 3 or 4 depending on the slope.

Chuck
All shots in the series are filmed with a 60° wedge so the loft is probably somewhere around 80° at impact
