In the GOAT Code, curing your over the top is super simple, simply Drop, Extend and Pivot (DEP) and you'll instantly and permanently cure your over the top golf swing.
I imagine many of you can relate to this move right here.
Look at how over the top this golfer is.
Has no power, straight over the top, a big pull.
How do I take him from that to this in just under an hour?
Let me show you.
So Jim here is an 80-year-old golfer who said he wants to hit the ball a lot farther, doesn't have any power, And let's see what's happening and see if you can relate to some of these moves because they're pretty common.
The first thing you're going to see is very little wrist set.
In fact, when we go to the top, that's the top of his swing.
So there's no wrist set.
So of course, you're going to have a very hard time having any power in your swing at all.
And then as he comes down, his lower body doesn't really do anything.
You can see that by his swing centers here on the right, not moving toward the target at all.
They're just kind of moving up and down.
And so then as he comes down, he's got no choice.
He's swinging nine degrees out to in.
And of course, that's going to lead to a dreaded over the top pull, cut, pull, slice drill, dreaded pull, hook, depending on the club face angle.
And most golfers can relate to this, but they don't know how to fix it.
Let me show you what I did to to completely change Jim's path with a one really simple drill that is simply drop, extend, and pivot drill.
So I got him, first of all, get into the club in a little bit better position at the top.
Helping him focus on how to move his right arm and hand.
And then from here, what I had him focus on is dropping the right arm, extending the right arm, and then pivoting to pull the club around.
If you're not using your arms.
And I'm going to show you in a moment him using this drill here, so you're going to see him.
He's already dropped his arm at this point, now he's extending and now from here you're done.
And then all it is is the pivot to bring the club back around.
You can see that's going to lead to the club path being way from the inside here, which is the goal to overcorrect this move.
That's what you need to feel.
Now in part two of this video, let me show you how to do it.
So you've probably swung over the top your whole life like most golfers have.
In the next few minutes, I'm going to make it stupidly simple to give you the drill to help you understand what's really happening in the GOAT code, to swing like the greats, to understand what your arm, your trail arm specifically, is really doing in the golf swing.
Because if you're like the golfer you saw at the beginning, who's swinging way over the top and way outside and swinging across the ball.
This is a really simple fix, but it feels very bizarre at first.
But think about it for a moment.
If you're swinging way over the top and you need to swing from the inside or at least more square, it's going to feel radically different.
And the more over the top you are, the more extreme it's going to feel.
So if you're really over the top, like you saw Jim was there, to get him to feel this, we spent an hour or really about 45 minutes walking on, working through these simple basic movements to help him understand how to put it all together.
And that's what I want to do for you here.
This is the quickest, simplest, and permanent over-the-top fix.
So the first thing to understand is your trail arm, all it's really doing is going back like this and like this.
Anything more than that, and you've added way too much.
Because what I had Jim do from here is simply drop his arm, let it extend, and pivot.
That's the whole golf swing in the goat code.
It's that simple.
So if I take my club back, I'm holding it with my right hand, going to the top.
Now I'm going to let my arm drop, extend, and pivot.
That's what brings the club back to the ball, not your arms.
If you're trying to do anything more than that, what I just showed you with your arms, you're making your golf swing way too complicated.
Now, one trick to this is it's not yanking your arm down.
There's an arm movement is involved, of course, but your leg drive, your lateral drive off your trail foot is making room for this arm to drop.
So what I really want is for gravity to help pull my arm down into my side while it's extending, while I'm pivoting.
If you can put these two moves together, go to the top, drop it, extend it.
Now lock it in here.
It's going to feel like it's way back behind you.
If you look at this from down the line, I'm kind of exaggerating the club kind of being way back here.
If you're used to being over the top, it's going to feel like this is going to feel very different.
Your right wrist has got to be bent back.
But now I'm going to drive off my right leg, continue driving off my right leg, Push my left hip back now, that is how I pivot, and now that's what's bringing the club down into the ball, drop, extend, pivot, and you'll never swing over the top again.
Now, real quick, we'll take a look at this in my swings, it's just a little warm-up eight iron.
Here, you'll see that my right arm is doing these exact motions that I just talked about.
But one key point is you have to move laterally.
If you look at my swing center, this orange circle here, this dynamically representing where my swing center is at the center of my pelvis.
As I start down, it's driving laterally significantly to make room for my arm, and that's what allows my right arm to get pulled down into my side.
Then my right arm is going to continue extending and I'm just going to keep pivoting, which you can see if you look on the left from the down the line view.
If you look at these two little circles here, those are representing my hip sockets.
And it's showing that.
As I am coming through that, my hips are turning and you can see my swing center moving forward and up, while my hips are pivoting through, and that's what brings the club through.
Your arms are not really that involved in the golf swing, not actively per se.
I'm using my whole body, my core, my legs, my trunk, Everything to bring the arms down for me and that pivot move is what allows me to maintain leverage.
Because I'm not trying to, you know, push against the shaft to extend the club out.
I'm simply letting my right arm drop down to my body, extend and pivot.
Let my left leg snap straight into the ball.
And that is a guaranteed foolproof way to never ever swing over the top.
