Got the chipping stroke down pretty well? Learn the "ripper" shot - the low flying chip shot that stops on a dime just like the tour pros on TV!

Once you've got a good feel for the basic chipping stroke, I'm going to teach you one of the coolest, funnest shots in the book.

And it's shockingly simple once you have the basic mechanics that you've been learning so far in the putting and chipping shot.

So what you're going to If you've ever seen pros hit these shots where they fly really, really low and then like, check up really quick, that shot is really easy, you're going to be shocked at how easy it is.

So first, let me just hit one shot here to show you the contrast, to show you what it looks like.

If just a reminder of when we're hitting our basic chipping shot.

Some ball off my back toe for right now, and I'm going to hold the face.

Set the face very square, trail hand only, and you can see that ball.

Land flew about in eight feet and rolled out about 15 feet.

These greens roll at about a 12.

so there's a fair bit of roll out there and this has got a little downhill a little left to right so that shot is a basic 60 degree chip shot now what if i need to put a lot of spin on that well you probably think you got to do something crazy with your hands or what have you but with the chipping mechanics that you just learned in the chipping video all you have to do is open the face and you're going to be able to hit unbelievably cool shots with just one simple setup change so watch here so now you saw that ball fly you know five ten feet five eight feet whatever it was and then roll out another 15 feet to the flag there now i'm going to take the exact same setup not going to change anything for right now now you can start to play with this and ball position and all of these things all i'm going to do though is open the face so now instead of my face being square to the target all i've done is just open it wide open lay it on its on the flange here basically so now everything else the same watch what happens to the shot just by changing the face angle that ball landed and barely trickled out this is downhill running away but you could see it try to bite immediately compared to the other one that trickled out and ran a long ways same length of my backstroke but because the face angle is different the ball comes out completely different let's do another one so again i'm going to leave everything else exactly the same just to show you the contrast and what the spin rate is going to be just by changing the face angle but keeping everything else the same i see how the ball wanted to bite there it doesn't want to roll out it flew twice as far as the first ball but still checked up short of it all that is is face angle and once you learn how to control the face with your trail hand and how you're releasing not like this but keeping that toe from ever releasing so you're maintaining that goat delivery position as you're coming through the strike and keeping your palm essentially facing the target so that the club face is you know the leading edge instead of being rotated over and the toe released you're feeling let's doing this that's what's going to give you that crazy amount of spin just by changing the face angle but keeping everything else exactly the same now if you hit behind it like that i was a little bit too far on my back foot because i was talking i wasn't thinking you're going to see the ball fly a little bit higher you want this to fly really low that's your aim and the trick to doing that is keeping the face feeling like this as long as you can if it bounces into the ball you're probably too far on your back foot like i was there and that's going to cause the ball to go up a little bit you want to feel like the club's coming out low and left with as maximum amount of loft that you can leave on there so now let's try one more and i'm going to swing a little bit more left you'll get the idea here so i'm going to move the ball just slightly up in my stance and i'll show you this face on just a moment and then get the same exact stroke you can see the ball landed and it's immediately kicked back and bit that's all just due to face angle you make the exact same chipping stroke exact same setup and you can hit those cool little rippers like the pros now let's take a look at this face on so here's my basic chipping stroke where i've got the shaft the club face very square with a little bit of shaft lean all i'm going to do now is just lay that puppy wide open and everything else stays exactly the same that ball came out super low and spun right back now let's take a look at how you can expect the ball to behave so first i'm going to fly it into the slope to show you how quickly it can stop i'm going to show you another view of the same shot and fly into the slope and you can kill the ball very quickly now it's obviously going to take much more control for your distance and spin so i'm going to make a longer swing here and fly it all the way to the hole or closer to the hole but you can see how quickly the ball that even landed on a down slope and still bit very hard but you can see i'm not swinging hard i'm not swinging fast this one's going to rip here this is all just the exact same chipping stroke and getting a feel botched that one not gonna do them all perfect especially one handed they're very challenging at first but you'll get a feel for getting that club to release under here's the basic chipping shot that we learned first you can see how much that ball rolls out it's you know 70 roll and now you're going to contrast that with a spinner here so now i'm going to hit the exact same setup same ball position same everything but i'm going to let the club face be more open address that one was too good you can see if you make the same shot or the same amount of power it's not going to go anywhere so you've got to swing a little bit harder with these because you can see how quickly they're going to bite so if you make the exact same distance of a backswing that you did with the first shot it's not going to go anywhere so you're going to have to learn how to hit it a little bit further a little bit firmer just by making a little bit longer of a backstroke so here again to contrast it here's another set i like to go back and forth to make my brain work to have to feel like okay here's my basic chip shot and now here's the ripper so this way i get the feel for how long i've got to make that same stroke going to the same pin so there's two totally different shots with similar results again i'm hitting the spinner and then i'll go back and forth i'll hit the first one as a you know low spin shot and then i'll go back and hit one with a high spin shot and just make my brain have to adjust so here's one here i'm hitting again just a little roller just a bump and run basically and you know again do it with a 60 so you can still get the same effect that you would with like a seven iron with a 60 but then you also have that option to hit that little ripper there that stops really quick and again this is only a you know a 10 yard shot so you have to be able to get the ball to stop that quickly without having to do anything fancy with your hands is a super valuable shot once you learn this basic chipping stroke mechanics and then you're going to have just be able to open the face make a little bit longer of a back swing and you will be able to hit these cool shots just as easy just as like the pros

I'm using a 60 degree wedge with a fair amout of bounce and I am popping the ball up a lot. Could this be due to the bounce on the club? Should I use my 55 degree that does not have bounce? Thank you!

Hello Bob. It may be due to excessive bounce, or you are pushing with the trail arm causing it to bounce off the turf too soon.

Hi Chuck, thanks for last reply, it helped. Should the clubface point to the target with the trail hand ripper or just open the face while feet are on a 30° angle to targetline? Best wishes, Jayden.

Hello Jayden. Just open the face. You can start to play around with different setup characteristics as you get proficient. But, for now the same with open face.

my current wedge does not have a grind on it. My older wedges looked pretty wild with how much was removed off the heel.

Chuck, I currently have Vokey SM9 60 with 10 degree bounce and S grind. I can get the ball to check up but I'm thinking I have to much bounce. What are your thoughts and recommendations?

Would 4 degrees be to little bounce for around the greens?? Also what grinds do you prefer? Thanks

Chuck
Hi Kent, I prefer as little bounce as possible most of the time unless I'm in really spongy Bermuda grass. In general 4-6* is perfect and I grind the heel of the sole down so that I can open the face and keep the leading edge close to the ground still.

Hey Chuck, Just wanted to follow up since I picked up a new 60 degree wedge with 4 degree bounce and T grind. Night and day difference keeping my trajectory low compared to the 10 degree bounce. Thanks for the suggestion.

when I lose it on chipping I always have to go back to this. I notice that if I swing with one hand there is no way I can hit the ball unless it goes through all the right positions in clockwise rotation. It's not a matter of trying to do it that way. I cant hit the ball unless I do. Then I get a feeling for it and take that feeling into my two hand swing. And then I forget and somehow the left hand takes over and I lose the feeling, chunk it and have to go back to one hand.

Hi Chuck Nearly 500 reps on this. What do you think? Good: balls going always around same spot. Bad: often I "shank" the ball, going 80 deg from target line, in front of me. Feeling: obtain better "sound" hitting the ball if I keep the wrist set as long as I can, moving my body instead of my arm through the shot. Correct? Thanks

Really good but too much weight on back foot. If you go back and look at some of the chipping videos I did. I talked about how the head and pressure actually move forward because of the short stroke in the back swing. Your shanks are coming because your body is not getting out of the way because you have too much weight on the back foot too late in the downswing and so you’re going to not have any room for your arm to come into the ball cause your right hip will be in the way.

Do you need to do 3000 rippers before you progress. Is the ripper a bonus to full around with before adding the lead hand drills?

Yes, it's more of a bonus for those that want to learn the shot.

This is a shot I would really like to have, and it foxes me completely! In this video you give concise instructions as to how to play it, and your results are clearly evident. But when I try, and believe me I’ve tried hard and often, I cannot achieve the desired result. Instead my shots go higher and shorter. How do you manage a low ball flight despite opening the club so much Chuck? Could you please provide additional clarification regarding the comment “angle of attack and and how shallow of a bottom of a swing arc you create by reducing wrist set” in your answer to the related question from Piet below. Thanks, Gordon

You're likely simply setting your wrists too much. Practice with a really short stroke first, like hitting it a foot and slide the blade under the ball with minimal to no wrist set or release. That will change the AoA

so to stop it going really high in the air you need to reduce wrist hinge? Would it be comparable to the amount of wrist hinge in the putter stroke?
January 17, 2025
64x64
Chuck
There is definitely more than in a putter stroke, but not a ton part of the reason the ball can go high. Is your bottom of your swing arc is too far back behind the ball because you’re not getting far enough onto your lead side.

Piet, Question about the mechanics. Watching the bunker play in the British Open, players opened the clubface quite a bit and came out almost vertical. What is the difference with the open clubface playing the ripper an d the ball flying much lower instead?
October 3, 2024

Chuck
It’s mostly angle of attack and and how shallow of a bottom of a swing arc you create by reducing wrist set. You can’t really compare this to a bunker shot since you don’t actually make contact with the ball and you’re moving sand in a bunker

Compared to your ball flight and spin in this video, what might I expect for ball performance from a 54° sand wedge with 13° bounce? It’s the most lofted club I have right now. Should I be looking to add a 58 with 8-10 bounce?
September 30, 2024
64x64
Chuck
You definitely need a more lofted club, 58 minimum, 60 would be better. That's a ton of bounce and very little loft which would make this shot not nearly as effective.

You can, they are related but that was really helping you shallow the club, whereas that's not needed here.

When I open the club face, because of the high bounce of the club, my club bounces of the turf (tight lies) and catch the ball thin. How do we address this
September 9, 2024
64x64
Chuck
How much bounce do you have on your 60? If you have 8* or less you should be fine depending on the grind, but if you have more and are playing on tight lies you won't be able to open the face as much.

Thanks Chuck. My 60 wedge had 10 degree bounce. I am getting a new one with 6 deg bounce which should solve my issue.

When I practice these with my Lob wedge, they are going quite a bit higher than the standard chip. I am trying to keep everything the same -- just opening the face. What might be causing this? Thanks!
