You hit the ball with your legs, specifically your lead leg, not your hands in RST. Learn how the long hitters on the PGA Tour and Long Drive Association get the power in their golf swings.
We've all snapped our buddies in the locker room with the towel at one point or another, right? Now, how do we get that towel to snap? If you're really good at it, you know that as you're going forward, in order to transfer that energy from this soft towel to the tip of it to snap your buddy, your hand actually stops going forward and actually moves backwards.
And that accelerates the tip of the towel.
What happens if I just keep pulling it through? Well, it doesn't work very well.
Snapping a towel is a really good analogy for how you release the golf club.
Most golfers, they want to do one of two things.
They either want to take their right side and keep pushing the club through, which of course there's no snap.
The club doesn't release until the ball's long gone, or they keep, as they start working and training the lead side to move correctly in the swing, they keep pulling the left arm.
And so when we do that with the golf club, it kind of creates the same thing as just dragging the towel.
We want these wrists to snap and release with great speed, but if you're continuing to pull really hard with your left arm, you're delaying the release of the club and dragging the towel.
And the same thing is true if you're trying to rotate your rib cage and push through, you're never getting the snap of the release.
So now in the golf swing, we don't take our hand forward and then pull them back.
That's not going to work very well.
So how do we get that same snapping acceleration that we get in the towel? I'm going to give you a little secret that is the key to one of the questions I get asked all the time is how do you hit the ball so far? I hit the ball with my legs and specifically I hit the ball and release the club with my left leg.
That is the snapping motion creates a snapping motion that releases my wrist for me.
My wrists in the swing are essentially passive hinges.
I'm not doing anything active with my hands per se.
I'm not trying to release the club or snap the towel.
I'm trying to keep my hands and wrists very, very soft.
People are shocked how if I grab their forearms, I tell them how lightly I hold the club because the softer these muscles are, the faster they can release.
But if you have a lot of tension in your hands, you'll never ever be able to release the club with any speed.
Try snapping a towel and holding on to it as tight as you can and being as rigid as you can.
It's not going to work.
But as you get soft, all of a sudden your wrist can release very quickly and you want your wrist to be able to be released by your legs.
This is key.
So one of the things, if you watch golf on TV at all, especially if you watch the long drive association guys, what you should notice, I want you to focus on this as you start watching this.
Look at their lead leg when they're hitting drivers and watch what happens at impact.
What you'll see is that their lead foot actually kind of jumps up in the air and will kind of land like this because they're pushing off the ground, using the ground for leverage so hard that it's actually lifting them up in the air.
You can see this with Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, the Fanow brothers, Bubba Watson.
These guys on the tour, when they're really trying to go after one, they're pushing off the ground so hard that their foot literally leaves the ground.
And you'll see this a lot in the long drive guys.
Why is that happening? Well, think about it.
One of the things I've talked about conceptually a lot is that your body should always be moving in the opposite direction of the golf club.
If you're trying to move in the same direction, you're always trying to move the force of movement in the same direction.
The club never gets to release.
You don't take advantage of the centripetal and centrifugal force that you're creating while rotating.
So when you're rotating, you, your body, is trying to create the centripetal force which will then, as a result, create centrifugal force which acts on the club.
Which means you don't have to try and move the club.
The forces of physics are going to release the club for you and accelerate the club for you as long as you're focused on moving, creating that centripetal force.
So one of the things that you've understood as I talk about the hip rotation is that my hips are rotating this way.
In order to get the club to move that way.
So I'm moving in the opposite direction.
My hip moves back this way, that moves the club this way.
What about on the takeaway? What direction did I tell you to move? In towards your spine, right? Move your shoulder blade in towards your spine.
But what direction is the club moving? Well, it's moving that way, but your spine is closer to the target.
You're moving toward the target and the club's moving away from the target.
In the downswing, your hips moving this way away from the target to move away from the ball to move the club toward the ball.
Well, that's all good, well, and simple in 2D space.
But the swing is happening in three dimensions, of course.
So the club is not only moving out toward the ball, but it's also moving down, right? There's a downward component because the ball is on the dirt.
So as we start coming down, we've got this angle to go down.
Well, how do I get the club to move down? We need to move up.
If I'm pushing against the ground for leverage, that's moving my body up, which will force the club to move down much more quickly.
That's why you see the long drive guys pushing off the ground as hard as they can.
They're using the muscles, much more powerful legs than what they've got in their forearms, your glutes, your hamstrings, your quads.
And so as you push against the ground very hard, that snaps the club, snaps the release.
And that's how you get the snap of the towel in your golf swing.
You hit the ball with your legs, not your arms and hands.
So as you start working through this, one of the questions I get asked all the time is this up and down movement seems like it adds a lot of timing and so on and so forth.
It's a critical part for power in the swing, period.
Now, as far as the timing goes, there's timing in everything.
And I certainly want to reduce timing as much as humanly possible.
But the difference is you're not relying on the timing of your finicky hands and arms, which are moving very, very quickly.
They're relatively soft and staying out of the picture.
You're just learning to post up on this left leg.
Now, you don't have to do it like a long drive guy.
You don't have to push that hard off the ground.
You're not trying to produce that much power with every shot anyway.
That's when you're really trying to get something extra out of it.
But on a normal shot, you still want to be pushing up, but it just might be much more subtle to where you're pushing up like this versus pushing up to the point that you're jumping up and down in the air.
So that movement is still going to move your hips up.
Now, here's the second question I get.
Well, if I move up and down, isn't my head going to be moving and I'm going to be losing my spine angle? No.
If you're moving from the left side and you're moving in the opposite direction, if anything, your spine angle will increase.
What do I mean by that? Well, when you lose your spine angle, the most common thing that people see all the time in their swings is they stand up like this, right? So they're losing the tush line.
Their hips are moving in close to the ball.
Well, what creates that? If I was just trying to do this, how would I do it? I'd be pushing off my right leg, of course.
The stuff that you don't want to do in the swing.
If I lose my spine angle, it's because my pelvis is moving in toward the target line and that's all coming from the right side.
Now, watch what happens if I take this right side out of the equation and move from the left side.
Now, as I move back, my spine angle doesn't change at all.
My right leg is no longer doing anything.
So as I'm moving my hip back and posting up, you'll see I actually create side bend and that actually increases my spine angle and allows me to maintain my posture.
If you're moving from the left side, moving up and back, your spine angle will stay the same or increase.
If you're moving from the right side, you'll stand up every time.
So not only are you going to, by learning how to post up on the left side, not only are you going to produce more power with less effort because you're using big muscles to do so, but you're also going to maintain your spine angle rather than lose it.
So as you're working through this, start understanding that as you're shifting into the left side in the downswing, it's really important that you don't just straighten up right away.
There's a timing to this in the sense that you're trying to think about the posting up of the lead leg is what's releasing the club.
So you want to start associating this movement together.
And a good drill for this is exactly what I'm doing.
Don't worry about where the club is going back.
I want you to start just kind of letting your arms and wrists as you rotate back set a little bit.
And then as you come down, Start trying to feel, posting up on this left leg and start seeing if you can get the feeling of that timing of pushing into the ground to get the club to snap.
And the softer you get your hands, the more natural and easy this drill will become.
So start hitting little shots like that, just going back and forth and posting up, posting up, and you'll start to feel how much more power you can get from the ground when you use your legs to create leverage in the golf swing.
