Rickie Fowler uses his legs in the golf swing for a great amount of power and control. In this video, I'll show you how to start using your lower body like a tour pro.

  • Understand what your impact position is supposed to look like. 
  • Allow the trail side to help get the weight over to the lead side. 
  • Control the body by focusing on the lead side hip being pulled away from the target with the obliques.

Hi - Can you provide the reccomended videos. Cant seem to find them and when I type in 'left leg for stability' I can't seem to find it. I am having difficulty posting up my left leg and continue to get my knee outside my foot. Need some drills!

Hello Chris, great to meet you in Idaho. Can you confirm for me what you mean in the video by "dont let the gap between the legs to get closed up" I am assuming you mean doing the opposite of Rickie - (his bowed "open" leg stance) so you want us to avoid letting the knees get too close together? Correct? This is where I am having trouble transitioning. I grew up with a swing that caused a big reverse C.

Hey Mark -- Great to meet you as well in Idaho. The space that you have between the knees at the address position, is virtually the same amount of space that you want to be able to maintain in the hitting area. The gap can close up a bit of course, but do your best to keep the space that you started with to help avoid some major swing flaws. Hope you are well!

Definitely one of the things I am working hardest on after our lesson. I can do it great in slow motion - it doesn't hold up at full speed yet. Will doing it slowly eventually train the muscles so that they will perform the same movements at higher speeds?

Hey Kyle, yes it is best to start very slow and concentrate on making the body movements perfect. You should start without a club and cross your arms over your shoulders. Then slowly add the club back to the mix and eventually you can start to ramp up your speed.

At the beginning of the downswing, do the hips bump directly forward toward the target or do they go toward the front part of my left foot-which would allow the club to drop to the inside. Making the bump somewhat diagonal then onto the finish. Hopefully, my question makes some sense!

Hey David, You want the hips to shift towards the target and unwind at the same time so that the weight is shifting to the lead foot but is staying in true balance, under the ankle in transition. Its a dynamic move. Check out the true balance video and the weight shift 3 video.

Chris Looks to me like rickie is using external rotation of lead leg to trigger shift to left. How does this match up to your comment above? Still having difficulty understanding the trigger move? Is it a shift left + hip turn or does the external leg rotation get things moving? Thanks

Hi David, The lead leg will externally rotate at the same time the hips are shifting. This allows the hips to move dynamically. It is a good thought to have the lead leg externally rotate to use as a trigger to get things moving over to the lead side.
