What's the biggest hurdle for amateur golfers and how do you fix it?

Hey guys it's Chuck Quinton here and I want to talk to you about a couple things that I see all the time and are a huge cause of why people don't improve on average and for the most part honestly it's kind of the same thing over and over again so I kind of feel like Groundhog Day sometimes because really golf isn't that hard when you follow a couple really simple things and focus on just those things and that's what I'm gonna talk about in this video the first one is you can't just watch the videos on the site I know that'd be great if you didn't have to actually get up and do anything and you just learn kind of through osmosis but it doesn't work that way you actually have to get up and do drills and so what are those drills well let's take a look at them so here on the left I want to walk you through this guy it's got a great golf set up as a member of the site he's been doing the drills but he's missed a couple big picture things and again they're the same things I see over and over and over again every day and so you can learn from his struggles by following what I'm going to have you do and make huge huge changes in your golf swim very quickly so let's see what's going on here I'm going to walk you through this as we go and I want you to pay close attention to what happens with his right arm now you'll notice right away if you focus just on his right arm that you can see that it's starting to fold just a little bit right here not as wide as he could be here now when I see this bells start going off in my head that I am expecting the golfer to start to collapse that right arm as they keep going up because they're already starting to load it up so let's see if that happens here keeps going up still pretty narrow still making a good turn though so so far we're not that bad a couple other little issues we're not going to focus on weight shift and stuff in this video obviously it's extremely important but we're going to target something else and so now I want you to look at that right arm and notice how it starts to disappear behind the billows cap a little bit so as this right arm starts getting really deep like this I know that you're going to tend to want to really use that right arm because you've loaded it up too aggressively and so you're going to rely on that for all of the power in your swing and not use your wrists and your wrists provide about two-thirds of the club head speed so now look at the angle that the club shaft is in in between the relationship here and his arms and watch as he goes back that wrist angle doesn't really change much at all in fact it's pretty much still kind of where it was halfway back and so as that happens the wrists aren't going to be able to provide any kind of speed because we're not really getting much wrist cock and or any down cock as we come down so once we get halfway down and clear these lines here notice a couple things one we've lost a tremendous amount of lag here this angle has become very wide and this angle is the most important one of the golf swing this is where the majority of your speed comes from second thing is you can see his right shoulder has popped out behind his head right away these are the two most common swing faults that amateur golfers struggle with and these two things kill your golf swing now let's take a look at on the right hand side here you'll notice first of all that as we start down watch what happens to the wrist angle now we'll put it about the same spot where his left arm is about where it is on the left side of the screen and now draw a couple little lines here slightly different angles here so now the golfer on the right has a tremendous amount more leverage in the swing which is again all of your speed and now look at his right shoulder these two things alone completely transform your golf swing the right shoulder not popping out from behind your head like you see over here on the left and the left wrist maintaining that angle is the difference between a scratch golfer and a 15 handicap golfer it's literally these two things and you can see some other things here obviously his back is still facing the target here on the right right so we still have this angle and notice he's not pushing off his right knee like he is over here because i took his right hand off the club he's not using the right side of his body not overusing the right side of his body i like to think of the right arm as somewhat of a passive conduit yes you can start to use it to throw a little bit to add speed to it but that's graduate level stuff we want to get the big picture stuff first and if we don't have that then we're going to be in mega trouble and these two things if you look at these and we've got a bunch of lines here let's clear those out a little bit this is all the difference between a really good golfer and a high handicap golfer that's it if we keep going down you're going to see a ton more lag and he's not doing anything to try and create or maintain this lag you're just not throwing it away by overusing the right side so you can see now obviously on the left he's got nothing left to hit with here there's no angle imagine hitting a nail with a hammer with no wrist angle obviously it's not going to work out really well this golfer on the left same guy obviously no right arm notice his shoulders are chilled out still his arms relaxed and he's got leverage to then release at the ball so how do we get to this point in the golf swing well it's going through this this sequence of drills in the rst five step system you add the right arm as the last phase of your golf swing so what are you going to feel well you're going to feel like you're not using your right arm in the golf swing i promise you you're using it way more than you think everyone does and when i tell them that they're using it too much and they think oh i didn't use it at all they're still convinced that they're not using it when in fact they're using it 10 times more than they realize everybody falls into this conundrum because you use your right arm and everything you do in daily life you don't feel it you have to trust that you're going to not feel that you're actively using your right arm in the swing until you get all of the stuff mastered which is going to be by that time you're going to be hitting the ball so far that you're not going to you're still going to feel like you don't even need it there my goal for you as you go through the rst five step system is that you get to the point where you almost forget to put your right hand on the club at a dress i mean that literally you're going to ingrain by doing so many reps not watching so many videos following along with me doing the repetitions and the rst five step drills that is how you're actually going to change your golf swing so if you're struggling with your swing and you see that you look like the golf on the left with the right elbow popping up right excuse me right shoulder popping out behind your head loading up that right arm losing lag at the top take that right arm off go through the rst five step drills and i promise you you'll see huge changes in your golf swing

Thanks, for me I think the right hand/arm is the biggest swing wrecker on my backswing. Pulling the club into a flying elbow. When I do the mirror drill my right arm folds into a nice elbow down position. So I really need to do the drills with no right hand to groove that movement. Mirror drill is great!

Sounds like you have a good game plan.

I liked this video, stumbled across it. My right hand arm is very dominant. I use it to pull the club on the back swing into a flying elbow. In that position my right hand pushes on the club on the downswing. If I mirror the left with my right the right elbow points down and I can start a good downswing without coming over the top. I even backswing with the left hand and start the right arm in a bent 90 degree and rotate into it, from that position I can hit balls. Question, how do I go about training the right hand/arm so it is automatic? Mirror drill swings 100 times a day?

Hi Eric, That's a good game plan for sure. You can slowly introduce the right hand into the swing by hanging onto the club into the backswing and letting go of it before impact, checking to make sure you are getting into the same positions with just the left hand on it. Then you can work to hang onto the club longer and longer the more proficient you become, always back-checking for quality in the movements. Hope that helps.

HI, watching the video , I have a question. I have a good lag with the club but my right shoulder turns too early. Have I to master my backswing rotation or I have to create more separation from upper body and lower body? I really appreciate your way of teaching, is news and based on biomechanical knoledge!!

Hello Gisella. You need to work on not spinning the trail shoulder through. Take a look at the Step 2 - Core Rotation Video. This will help with upper/lower separation. Also, if you tend to get steep take a look at How to Fix Plane and Path Video and Stop Coming Over the Top.

Chris mentions specific drills to get your trail hand back on the club. What specific sequence of drills is he referring to? I don't see a lot of one handed drills rolling into adding the trail hand. What the RST 5 step drills?

Hello Mitchell. Step 4 - Add the Club and Step 5 - Add the Trailing Arm is what Chuck is referring too.

I have a problem with what Chuck says about the right shoulder movement at the initiation of the downswing in this video and what Patrick Reed does in Chuck's Patrick Reed video. Reed's right shoulder becomes visible very early in his downswing. How does he get away with it? I've done my reps but as soon as my lead hip shifts to the left, my lead shoulder also moves laterally left. As the hips begin to open, the shoulders open (and this occurs when I'm practicing core rotation drills ... long before adding the lead arm or club).

Hello Joseph. Some of that is camera angle with Reed. But, he gets away with it because he doesn't rush the arms down allows them to work in front progressively. The shoulders will have to follow the lower body. It is okay to let them rotate as a function of lead side work. The feeling of holding the shut to the target helps you not spin them too early or come over the top. It is impossible though to hold them shut all the way to the ball.

Follow up question ... observe the student in the right screen as he starts his downswing (~4 min into the video) ... seems the hands/arms move a long way down before any shoulder movement. How is that accomplished? Coordinated hip bump and left arm pull? Also does he perform enough lateral weight shift? Thanks

Hello Joseph. Yes, he could've had a little more shift to the lead side. It's coordination of weight, lead arm and gravity. I think one of the big keys your missing is to hold the arm up there too long forcing your self to have to rotate more. You need to allow for lead side pull and tension free arms (that will allow for some gravity) to take place. Take a look at Re-Shaping Your Swing for Lag. Listen when Chuck talks about turning the muscles off and gravity.

Craig, I would like to follow up on your comment " I think one of the big keys your missing is to hold the arm up there too long forcing your self to have to rotate more." Question #1 : Will I hit pull hooks or flip hooks as a result (which is what is happening)? I hit balls today with the goal of getting the hands/clubhead quicker to the ball in relation to the weight shift (at this point don't ask me how I'm doing it.). Contact is more solid and flight is straighter. Am I on the right path? Thanks.

Hello Joseph. If you don't allow the lead arm to work down and then at the last moment try to flip or catch up with the club face. It can easily lead to a pull hook or flip hook. Yes, a better blend with weight shift and allowing the arms and club to swing down/through the shot sound correct.

What drill? It is something and "5 step" drill but you are saying it so quickly I'm unable to understand what you've said.

Hi William. Basically Chuck is saying the biggest hurdle for the amateur is to stop pushing with the right side and start pulling with the left. The entire 5 step process with help with this but primarily the "add lead arm" video or the "9 to 3 drill"
