Getting just the right amount of shoulder elevation in the backswing is sometimes a bit tricky. Until now. In this video, I’ll show you a simple, step-by-step drill that’ll put you into the perfect position at the top of your swing. This drill will also help stop the pushing motion that often causes your arms to get “out of the box.” Check out this video to develop a silky smooth takeaway and backswing!
- Elevation is a slight upward movement of the arms that helps give the club lift in the backswing
- The hands should be at about the base of the pocket at the completion of the takeaway
- The right elbow will be in line with the bottom of the chest at the top of the backswing
Hi guys, I'm rotary swing instructor Chris Tyler, and today I'm going to show you how a couple of pool noodles can help you with your shoulder elevation in your golf swing.
Alright, let's go ahead and get started with today's video.
I'm going to show you guys how.
A couple of pool noodles are going to help you with your shoulder elevation and your takeaway in your backswing.
And help you set up some reference points that you can use while you're practicing, while you're drilling, or you're out in the driving range.
Okay, the first thing I want to talk to you guys about is what shoulder elevation is.
And if you haven't seen understanding shoulder elevation in the backswing section, go ahead and take a look at that video first.
But shoulder elevation is just best defined as a slight upward movement of the arms, usually about three to four inches.
And it's one of those, one of those two factors that help give the golf club lift in the top part of your backswing.
And it is a variable.
So I want you guys to understand that shoulder elevation is a variable.
Some people are going to require more elevation and they want to use the body less.
Some people are going to use less elevation and want to use the body more.
But in today's video, I'm going to kind of use the middle point.
I'm going to use the elevation point at the top part of my golf swing, right at the bottom of my peck.
So when my arms reach full elevation, my right elbow is going to be right at the bottom of my peck.
All right, So the way I'm going to have you set this reference point up is I'm going to use this first pool noodle as my takeaway noodle.
It's going to be cut right to the base of my pocket.
Okay, so that's the first noodle.
And then the second noodle is going to be right to the base of my chest.
And the way you want to go about this drill is we're not going to do this with a golf club at first.
Okay, we're going to stand probably about six inches just inside this blue noodle.
If we were facing down the line here, six inches, regular setup, we're going to hold our hands about an inch apart here.
And we're just going to start making some rotation.
And if we notice that our hands are hitting this noodle or they're getting inside of this noodle, Then that generally means we don't have enough elevation, or there's some pushing motion going on there in the takeaway.
So what we want to look for is we want to look for this motion right here alone with rotation.
So when I get my completed takeaway, it's going to look something like that.
So you see how my hands are now on top of this blue noodle.
So I'm going to drill that a few times.
Okay, so I'm starting to get the hang of it here.
Then once I get to the top of the blue noodle here, I'm going to go ahead and grab my left thumb of my hand, and I'm going to add right arm flexion.
And I'm going to go to the top part of my golf swing.
Okay, So you can see here.
Now I've got this reference point and this is going to help me build shoulder elevation into the entire golf swing.
Once you drill that enough, you can go ahead and put a golf club back in the mix.
I would recommend that you guys start very light.
I would start by holding the other end of the golf club here, because every time we start to hold the heavy end of the club, we start to screw things up.
We run into not having enough elevation.
We don't hit our reference points.
We really want to focus on the body movements alone and allow the club to react to those body movements.
All right, so same kind of thing here.
We're going to drill.
If you notice I hit the going to start over.
Okay, so I'm starting to get this now.
Okay, I'm going to use those as reference points, so that's a good rep.
All right, So continue this process until you become really comfortable with how shoulder elevation works in your golf swing.
Put it to use and get that perfect backswing every
