Over the Top Stick Drill

Are you tired of yelling “Fore!” when you hit big, nasty slices off the tee? If so, here's a drill that will prevent you from slicing the ball...I guarantee it! You’ll hit more fairways, and less “who knows where it will land” shots. This drill will teach you: 1) How to hit from the inside so you can watch your shots draw, and 2) How to roll over your release and square up your club face.
- Place Stick on Target Line
- Swing to Right of Stick in Follow Through
- Focus on Shoulders Closed
- Swing to Right Field in Baseball
All right, So today I have a great drill for you guys that's going to help you to stop coming over the top and stop hitting those big slices once and for all.
I guarantee you that this will definitely work if you follow this step-by-step process.
But I do want to warn you, if you're not coming over the top, if you already hit a draw or a hook, you don't want to watch this video.
This would be the exact opposite of what you want to do, because we're going to train you to come more from the inside, how to hit a draw, and how to get those hands to roll over.
So if you're already hitting a hook or a draw, don't watch this video.
This is not for you.
If you're coming over the top, swinging to the left, or hitting a big slice, you're going to want to watch this video.
Okay, so as I mentioned, in this video, we're going to teach you to swing to the right.
Now we already mentioned that when we hit, when we come over the top, this is mostly a right side dominant motion.
So our right arm's trying to overtake the swing, and we're swinging over the top.
So the first thing we want to do is make some swings with the left hand only.
So what I want you to do before we start doing that is to set this up correctly.
I want you to put a stick about waist high, and I want it to be far enough out in front of you to where, as you're coming through the shot, you could hit this stick.
So I don't want to be standing back here and not be able to reach that stick.
I want to be able to reach this in my club to hit it if I do this incorrectly.
Then I'm going to set up to a ball that is in this line.
I'm going to put my ball right here in the line, so if I hit this ball dead straight, it would hit the stick if it's going right toward the target.
And now I'm going to start out with a parallel line, a line that's going the same direction where my feet would be.
And the idea is that I'm going to make some swings with just my left arm only, and I'm going to swing well out to the right as if I was trying to hit a giant hook.
My path is now going to be well to the right, and I'm going to miss that stick.
So let's get rid of the ball at first, and now I'm going to set up.
I'm going to feel like my shoulders are very closed, and my club is swinging 45 degrees to the right.
That's the feeling I'm having here, and that's probably about accurate.
So my club is way too far to the right.
We're exaggerating the opposite of an over-the-top for now.
So I want you to do about 50 or 60 of these swings, making sure that your shoulders are very, very closed.
So at impact, my shoulders are going to be pointing way over here to the right, and my club is going to be swinging to the right.
So we're going to do about 50 or 60 of those.
And then what we're going to do is we're going to hit a couple shots as we begin to add the right arm.
So we've done the one with just left arm only, and then we're going to add the right arm nice and soft, still swinging way too far to the right.
We're going to practice that for a little bit, and then we're going to hit a shot.
Once we hit the shot, then we're going to start to tone this down and get more of a square path.
So let me go ahead and hit one shot for you, show you what that would look like.
Shoulders are very closed.
I feel like my shirt buttons are pointing back here somewhere, and I'm swinging well out to the right.
So I barely nicked that stick.
That's okay.
You can see that my ball was way to the right, which is what I'm wanting.
So keep on practicing this until you can do a few of these without hitting any of the the stick, or maybe just barely grazing the stick on the ones that are wrong.
This is pretty tough to do because this path is way too far to the right.
So if you barely tap the stick for now, that's okay.
When we start to tone it down, we're not going to want to hit that stick at all.
Okay.
So now you've hit some shots way too far to the right.
We're going to start toning this drill down.
So we started out with this ball in line with the stick, and I'm gradually going to start to move this ball farther and farther out and my, my feet line or my toe line farther and farther forward.
So eventually my toe line is going to be in line with this stick.
So I'm going to go ahead and hit a few shots with the ball here, and I'm going to swing farther and farther to the right.
So this time, the first time I had to swing well out to the right, almost 45 degrees to the right.
Feeling like I'm keeping my shoulders closed, feeling like I'm using more of my left arm.
And then gradually I'm going to start getting closer and closer to this line.
I'm going to hit some shots from here.
So now my club's out, out there.
It's not as far to the right, but it's still pretty exaggerated.
And then eventually, I'm going to work the ball to where I can set up and my feet are going to be in line with this stick.
And I can go ahead and make some swings down the target line and miss this rod out here.
Now, One thing you're going to have to do when you're exaggerating is maybe put the ball a little bit farther back just for those initial drills.
So if my ball is normally here under my left ear or my shirt logo, I'm going to have to move it a little farther back at first.
But after we get all the way to where my feet are now in line with this stick, very similar, exactly the exact same thing we're doing with the chicken wing long arms drill.
This is where we're ending up with this.
Now my ball position is going to be normal.
So I'm going to be swinging to the right.
I'm going to be practicing, practicing extending those arms out and not hitting that stick.
And I should be able to make a normal swing, hit this ball and not hit into this stick in the fall through.
There you go.
So that's going to teach you how to start out by exaggerating, getting rid of that over the top, using some more left arm, closing the shoulders, And then gradually working that back into a normal shot by scooting closer and closer as you're hitting balls, until eventually, your toes are in line with the stick.
