Hi Craig, As far as course management. Is there anything on RST that deals with this at all? Any key tips for a 16 handicap? One question for now - On par 5’s, is it important to ensure that you try your best to par these holes by going for it in 2? I’m plenty long, but can get Wiley. Or maybe it’s more a situational risk reward thing. Should I be willing to take more risks on par 5’s?

Hello Matthew. We used to have a section on this, but it is no longer on the site. However, we may develop another one in the future. The last thing you ever need to worry about is going for Par 5's in 2. Always a risk reward situation, but I will give you an example that would be ideal. Zach Johnson one the Masters never going for a Par 5 in 2. Sounds ludicrous for Augusta, but he basically took potential disasters out of play. What he did is trained a yardage he was comfortable with. Let's say 85 yards. He practiced the poop out of his 85 yard wedge shot before the tournament. And, every time on a par 5 he would lay up to that yardage. Since he was so comfortable with that yardage from practice. He birdied every par 5 for the week I think except 1. I think many amateurs should follow that approach.

Thank you Craig! Makes sense. Another question. For contemplating driver off of certain holes or to use an iron/hybrid. My driver can be wild at times. Should I force myself to get comfortable with driver and use it more often, or use hybrid iron on holes where I can still get to a comfortable yardage that I like. So if it’s 375 hole, and I can hit a 4 hybrid 200, I don’t mind 175, so play more conservative, or am I losing something there? Not a black and white rule, but just for some guidance from you.

Hello Matthew. In the long run you should be comfortable enough with the driver to take advantage of a shorter length hole. But, until you have some faith in the club. You are giving up strokes by not getting the ball in play. Bogeys don't kill you. Others do.

Hi Craig, I have found that when I play somewhat fast, I play much better. I keep a better rhythm and do not overthink. This will involve me not taking any practice swings unless a special situation specialty shot. It just keeps me in the flow and turns my brain off and I trust everything so much more. I also do this on putts and chips. I still think strategy and how to play the hole etc etc, I also take my time with alignment. Thoughts on this? Any reason to try to fight this?

Hello Matthew. I don't mind you marching to the beat of your own drum. But, when adding new components to the swing. You may need at least one swing to give the brain a refresher of what you are trying to accomplish.

For this week's tour analysis we're going to be doing something a little different. We've done lots and lots of videos on Jason Day. He's had an excellent couple of years. Rather than focusing on his swing we're going to be talking about the importance of pre-shot visualization.

                Okay guys, if you get to watch any golf this past weekend you probably saw Jason Day pull out another victory and get himself back into the winner circle there. Congratulations to him. Often times we're so focused on the golf swing that we never really spend time talking about the mental aspect of the game. I know we just recently released a video on how to develop laser like focus. This video's going to really start to compound on that.

                If you watch Jason Day, and his pre-shot routine, when he stands in from behind the golf ball he actually closes his eyes. What he's doing there is he's visualizing the golf shot that he wants to execute. He actually has openly said that when he's closing his eyes he's visualizing himself standing in front of him. He can actually see himself swing back. He can see himself swing through. He can also see the golf ball leave at the same time.

                After he gets comfortable with the shot that he's visualizing it's then at that point he starts to pick his target and then he walks into the golf shot. He's seeing the target mostly. He can still see the golf ball out of his periphery. At that point he gets into his shot, gets himself set, and then goes ahead and executes.

                Let's talk about the importance of visualization. Why is this an important aspect for you to handle? Visualization can help you free your mind up from having lots of negative thoughts. It can actually take you away from thinking about mechanics in your golf swing. It's also a great way to get yourself extremely focused. I would strongly suggest, and you'll see a lot of tour players always start their golf shots from back behind the golf ball. You'll see them stand back here. This is the spot where they're staring to pick their target. This is the spot where they're starting to visualize the shot their starting to execute. It's extremely important for the mental side of the game and it allows you to be way more focused when you're on the golf course.

                Try it out. If you've been struggling with possibly thinking too mechanically on the golf course then visualize your shot, allow yourself to see yourself hitting the shot, seeing the golf ball fly through the air, and then go ahead and pick your target, and stay focused, and you'll see that you're going to hit the golf ball closer to the hole much more consistently.
