Intro to Lead vs. Trail Side Dominance

There is an art to letting the pieces of the golf swing fall into place, this is the most important key to avoiding fighting against yourself.


As you begin this journey to discovering which side of the body is best for your natural golf swing, it's important that you remember and think about the golf swing in terms of polarity.

What I mean by that is all things in life tend to work in opposite pairs, just like two sides of a magnet, two sides of our brain, our bodies, left versus right, light versus dark.

Polarity is the most natural thing in the world, in the universe, really.

Just like two sides of a coin, they are linked intrinsically, but they are opposites by their very nature.

And in the body, The exact same thing is true when we're looking at the left versus the right, or lead side versus trail side patterns in the golf swing.

Just like binary code on a computer where zero means off and one means on, You need to think of your golf swing as you're going through this learning process in the exact same way.

So if you're going to be a trail side dominant player, that means that the trail side is on and the lead side is off.

That's because this is the most quick way to learn how to feel.

The proper movements in the golf swing is having one side be dominant and the other side be submissive during the learning process.

And this will keep you from fighting against yourself and feel like you're always wrestling against your golf swing.

And trying to make it so that you're trying to learn two different things at the same time.

What you want to learn is the one dominant thing you're wanting to do, and the other side is going to listen to that side.

It's going to be submissive to that.

You'll actually find that it's much more natural to turn one side off, figuratively speaking, of course, and learn how to feel the whichever side it is.

If you're going to be lead side dominant, that's going to be lead arm, lead side of the body.

If you're going to be trail side dominant, it's going to be trail arm and trail side of the body.

Whichever side that you're working on, you want to feel that that is the dominant motion.

This will help you feel so much more fluid and dynamic.

99% of the time when golfers struggle, it's because they're trying to teach both sides to do something similar at the same time.

You can't use the lead side for power and the trail side for power at the same time.

Very easily until you learn how to feel one more dominant than the other.

And it's no different than when you're walking.

We do this in every single aspect of our life.

If you're walking, one side is swinging forward while the opposite leg is swinging forward.

And then when you reverse it, the lead side, the left arm is swinging forward while the right leg is swinging forward.

Our brains work in the same way.

The right hemisphere of the brain is controlling the left side of the body.

The left hemisphere is controlling the right side of the body.

When you think about the golf swing in the exact same terms of everything else that operates in the universe, two sides of a coin, light versus dark, yin and yang, It makes the golf swing start to feel so much more fluid and dynamic because one side is responding to what the other side is doing.

So then rather than trying to coordinate two sides wrestling with each other, you are learning to coordinate one side while the other side simply follows along.

Once you feel this for the first time, you'll feel instead of fighting against yourself and wrestling your golf swing, you'll feel that these both sides fit together like pieces of a puzzle.

When you're trail, if you're trail side dominant and you're adding force to apply speed to the shaft, this arm can't be trying to pull at the same time.

It'll throw everything into a battle and you want again, one side to be in control while the other side listens.

And in the learning process, this makes it so much simpler.

When you're trying to teach both sides of the body to do something at the same time, and you don't know which one's really supposed to do what, it's like putting two opposing magnets together.

They repel each other, and that's what your golf swing will feel like when you're trying to train them in an incorrect way.

When you make one side the dominant and one side the submissive, it makes everything fit together truly like a piece of a puzzle.

And then of course, once you have the feeling of the overall swing pattern, as you get more proficient, then you can start to add back in that lead sides or trail side or whichever side you're working on.

That will allow you to control the club face more, to de-loft it more, to control spin rates, etc.

But get the basic pattern first, and you'll know when you're ready.

To start adding more of the other side, to start manipulating the club for control and to change ball flight.

So if at any time you feel stuck in your journey, Realize that probably you're trying to get both sides to do something at the same time when really they have to work in opposites.

Chuck ... watched video "How to Sync Your Arms and Body in the Backswing". You start back by releasing tension in Left side. Is this part of the Trail Side Dominant ???? What other lessons (in addition to Vankatesh are appropriate for Right Side Dominant??

Is it fair to say the whole trail side dominance vs lead-side dominance is relevant to the release portion of the swing? In short you still pull with the left side to delivery with trail side dominance but then u throw using the wrists etc ? With lead side dominance you pull with the left side to delivery position but u rotate ur body through impact? Because at the end of the day u have to get to the left side with both swings and u have to get to the same delivery position with both swings. At least that’s what I am picking up ????‍♀️

Umm, not exactly. The hip drive off the trail leg is driving the trail hip forward and in the same direction of the club, but the lead hip is being move opposite. So one side is moving opposite, and one side is moving in the same direction.

Hi Chuck, hope all is well! Thanks for this video and I see on the website that you also changed the "chapters" into the 2 groups trail side dominance and lead side dominance. Maybe this is still "work in progress" but I want to ask anyway. I see that all GOAT serie information is in the trail side dominance group now and nothing from the GOAT serie is in the lead side dominance serie. Does this mean that GOAT technique is only for trail side dominant golfers? Thanks for helping! Friendly greetings, Marcel

There is crossover on both sides, but when it comes to the sides of the body, I have always held the belief that you train those independently first.
