Bryan begins Phase 2 of The GOAT Code with his first chipping submission. See if you can find the "hidden" errors in his technique before seeing Craigs review! Make Sure You're Getting Your Swing Reviewed Here!

all right rotary swing members brian zimmerman back with the uh next edition of the goat code journey and uh in the last video obviously we passed the putting assessment so now we're on to chipping so what you're gonna see here is some basically me just getting a baseline so i can send it into craig and let him take a look at it so just doing some really short uh chips here well not really short probably should have been a lot shorter to be honest but it's probably 25 35 feet somewhere in there i'm just trying to get a feel for it hit a few decent chip shots making sure i'm turning my my chest and not just using my arms in that view of it right there just trying to focus on solid contact keeping the face square down the line not letting it turn over so that's pretty much what's going on there now as we get to the down the line version you can kind of get a better idea of how far away the chip is it's probably 25 30 feet probably a little bit longer than what i should have been doing but it was just a good spot to chip from that day so you can see the same thing just trying to make sure the face isn't shutting down or rolling over um the grouping is pretty solid most of those are you know way less than three foot so not going to complain about the results as to what was going on but again just trying to get a baseline focusing on making sure that face is not rolling over that i'm using my my chest you know my my cord to basically take the club back and bring it through and then let's turn it into craig and see what he's got to say hello brian rotary swing tour instructor craig morrow here hope all is well today all right submitting first trail hand only chipping reps fantastic and i'm glad that you sent these my way because it's very important before you start heavy repping that we get these movement patterns cleaned up because this trail hand chipping motion is going to bleed into the rest of your golf swing what we do with pitching and wedge play and nine to three and full swing it all starts right here and if you get this movement down if you start to rep this one correctly then you're already taking a big step forward because even though it may not seem like it they're all interconnected and it all starts with this simple basic trail hand chipping motion so let's talk about it got you on the right hand side of the screen i got chuck on the left hand side of the screen and when i look at your swing or when i look at your chipping motion it's not really that bad but i do have a couple things that i want to talk about as you move throughout the motion the first thing is i'd like a little bit more kind of fascial stretch to start the swing and i'll show you with chuck here in a second because that's going to make you want to work with your core a little bit more versus wanting to get a little bit shouldery or get a little bit more army in the motion because as you go back right here and back down you're kind of losing your lean all right you're kind of returning it almost right back to the initial setup point and then as you're going through you'll kind of see how your shoulders and your head are really rotating a lot early on through the shot so you're trying to get those shoulders a little bit involved to get that ball chipping in the right direction and i really want to dial in the movement to the core kind of making all the magic happen and i want to have a little bit more shaffling at impact i want to maintain a little bit more extension in that trail wrist and you'll see that you're kind of helping it just a little bit you'll see that the shoulders the eyes the head everybody's just kind of rotating through a lot right here and if you look at the moment of truth right here there isn't any shaffling okay and we want to make sure that we maintain some extension in that wrist so that the handle's out ahead and so that we de-lock the club a little bit and get a nice clean strike on it get that good compression on it and you can see you're just trying to help it out just a little bit too much right here see how even on this one you can see your eyes watch your eyes on this one you'll see how your eyes are moving even before the putter or excuse me the wedge gets down to the ball and so you just end up trying to help it too much with your upper half okay so if we look at this with chuck over here on the left hand side of the screen what i want you to notice first is how he kind of starts off you're going to see that his stance is a tiny bit more narrow than yours and you see how he starts off with just kind of pressing just a little bit into the lead side now he's not adding like a massive forward press or anything like that what he's doing he's kind of rocking his body into his left side just to awaken his muscles just to get everything to start firing so he doesn't just swing his arm and hand independently then as he goes back right here he really gets that core engaged to move that trail arm and hand back and now the cores being the main driver of the stroke into the ball what i want you to notice is impact right here and let me wind you to just one of yours what are the couple differences we see right here one it looks like chuck has a little bit more of the weight on his lead side which i think if we narrow up the stance a little bit be a little bit more lead side biased with our weight we'll be in a better position two look at the trail wrist you see how he's got a little bit more extension in his trail wrist and that's just a fancy word for saying he still has a little bit of covering there so you'll see that he's got a little bit more extension here which is giving him a little bit more leaning and if you notice yours right here you'll see how vertical you are right here now i know the camera angle's a little bit off but your trail arm and hand is going to be a little bit too far behind your lead thigh right here and let's look at where he's making impact right here so you can see that sitting back a little bit with the weight on the trail foot losing a little bit of the section on the way through a little bit of the eyes that's what's causing the inconsistencies okay and you'll see the same thing as chuck starts to work through right here you can still see how he still has some extension in that wrist and yours is pretty flat right there okay that's going to be a big one to get this strike where we want it to get the ball flying as consistently as we want it to and when we look at the down the lawn we get set up here same thing with the stance yours tends to get a little bit wide right there as you start to go back right here you can see a little bit of core right there getting you going but same thing you're trying to help it you can see how your hips your eyes your whole body's trying to help this shot on the way through you're just working too hard you're just moving too many things it's not that you're hitting a poor chip but when we think about wanting to get the consistency out of it really controlling the spin really getting we want to make sure that we're doing less now the good news is you can see just like with your putting you're not really adding a ton of pronation right here which is good you can see that that face that toe isn't really rotating around too much so you're not trying to help it out as much with your hand but you can see everybody's kind of firing right here and that's what we got to tone down if you look at chuck over here on the left hand side of the screen you'll see he's got that little press into the lead just to kind of get things going it's kind of a little trigger to start making the backstroke and you'll see the core winding the arm and hand back and you'll see that as he comes through you can really see that extension that he's maintaining in the wrist but you see how he's just moving less i know your chip looks a little bit longer than his but you see how he's just moving less through here the shoulders aren't trying to help as much and the weight's on the lead side so your homework okay the first thing that we need to do is we need to button up the stance with the second thing that we need to do once you get that let's put a little bit of weight and just press a little bit of motion into the lead side just to kind of get things moving get things activated as we go back we're going to do the same thing we're going to use our core to take the trail arm and hand back and stroke just as you did in your putting as we come through i really want you to focus on this core movement bringing the arm and hand down and i want you to feel maintaining the extension and the trail wrist longer okay as you maintain the extension of the trail wrist longer letting the core not the shoulders not anything else letting the core really drive this in i want you to stabilize a little bit of your eyes and your head okay because i don't want you chasing it with your trail side as you come through and then when you start to move through the shot over here i want you to check your weight i want you to make sure that your weight is still on your lead side right now you're kind of almost rocking the shoulders and pivoting off that back trail foot we want to make sure that that weights on that lead side so i'm going to give you a couple drills on your review to watch let's get the setup we use a little bit of the fascial stress to trigger it trigger the backswing as we come down we're going to maintain a little bit more extension we're going to make sure that the core is doing it that the shoulders the eyes the head are really quiet the core is going to be leading the trail arm into impact as we maintain that extension so we can get a little bit more shaffling at the moment of truth and we'll be able to get this trail chipping more consistent all right so there we have the first review from craig and again i can't stress this enough how important these reviews are because if you look at the videos that i did and if i'm out just practicing myself the grouping that i had on the ones that i turned in obviously during the practice session there was more but it's pretty good and i would look at the results so to speak and think they were perfectly fine that i was doing most things correct but if you listen to craig's review we have multiple issues going on which is great to get a baseline going into it so basically i'm not wasting my time practicing so stance obviously needs to be a little bit more narrow since mine's too wide work on the shaft lean at impact you saw in the the video where chuck was versus where i was you could also clearly see that my head and my shoulders are kind of like trying to follow the ball so we need to work on that extension in the wrist that's you know again goes along with shaft lean my extension in the wrist stays more stable the shaft lean will be there and the weight on my lead side so these are all things that i honestly wouldn't have picked up on my own i look at these videos prior to turning them in to see if i can think of anything that's off base but again the results were there as far as what the chips looked like and where they finished and at the end of the day we're keeping score so i would think that the technique was pretty solid but again going through the program i wanted to make sure that i'm doing it right especially in the very beginning for the foundations as we moved into bigger swings getting into wedges and pitches and eventually full swing so uh these reviews are priceless in my opinion so if you're not getting reviews and whatnot i highly suggest you you do it even if it's just one here and there i would i would get them to make sure you're on the right path so okay well we know what to work on and i'll start doing that and do the next one and turn it in and we'll see what craig has to say about that
