Effortless power in the golf swing is a difficult concept for many amateur golfers. In video 2 of the perfecting your impact series, I'll show you how to add some speed with just a bit of weight shift.

  • Start with a narrow base.
  • Gradually widen the base and allow the shift to create momentum in the club.
  • Right heel down on the ground.

Okay guys, so here we are at week number two of perfecting your ball striking and turning you guys into a bunch of ball striking geniuses and I hope everybody had a fantastic week last week and got in their thousand reps and had some really good progress. And felt what it's like to strike the golf ball nice and solidly.

Now this week what we're going to to is, it's still going to seem like we have our training wheels on, but all we're going add small piece of weight shift here. And we're gonna give you a little bit of a check point to look for with these next thousand reps. And then weeks three and four, we're gonna really start to push you. We're gonna really ramp your speed up and by the end of it you'll have your training wheels off and you'll be striking the golf ball really, really well.

Game plan wise, again, it's going to be a thousand reps this week. But we're going to start out by adding a little bit of weight shift but I'm going to do it with a very narrow stance. So you're going to see me stand about six inches apart. And what my goal here is, is just to feel like I'm getting a little bit more pressure in my right side. So you can see my weight's way over here in my right leg. I'm going to swing my arms out to my 9 o'clock position here, you can go a little bit further if you need to. If you feel comfortable with it. Then what I'm going to do, is rather than pulling my arms down, is I'm just going to shift all my weight back over to my lead side. So you can see now I'm just a little bit out past neutral joint alignment and that's just because my golf stance width is narrow at this point.

So again, I'm going to shift over to my right, then I'm going to shift my weight to my left. So now what you can notice is, is that the weight shift, if I'm standing over here on my right side and then I shift my weight, you can see that that's moving my arms. That's helping you create momentum to this. So a lot of people want to get up to their right side and they want to pull their arms down and that's the exact opposite way of how we want to do things. We want to allow the body to pull the arms into the hitting area and allow you to release it with more speed.

So again, we're going to start out slow, shift to the right, shift left, let the club release. Make sure you feel like your wrist and your forearms are really relaxed. You shouldn't have your feet coming up off the ground.

So my goal today is that I'm going to get 200 reps of that in. Then what I'm going to do for my next 200 reps tomorrow, is I'm slowing going to start to widen my stance. So I'm going to go from about six inches to about ten inches. Okay, so now my goal at this point is to make sure when I shift over my right side, is that my right leg is going to go into neutral joint alignment here. Okay? So, shift, swing out to nine, shift, and now you're going to see that my left leg is in neutral. So I'm going to shift back into left and my forearms and writs rotate very relaxed.

Then after I get 200 reps of that, I'm going to widen back up here almost to where I'm in my proper stance width here, about two inches outside of neutral joint alignment. And I'm going to spend the remaining part of my reps. So the next three days are going to be done at normal stance width. So I'm going to make a small shift over to the right, just about a one inch shift here. So you can see I haven't got my right knee all the way in neutral. Just a small shift. Out to nine. Big shift left, so now my left leg is in neutral. And then we're going to let it release.

Now, a very, very important check point for this week is to not allow your right heel to come up off the ground. If your right heel comes up off the ground, you do 100 push-ups to alleviate  this. We do not want this right heel to come up off the ground. That's what can cause the body to rotate. That's what can help bring your hips forward. So when you make your reps, small shift right, big shift left, release, right heel needs to stay down on the ground.

And as another check point for you, when you get out here to the release point, I want both arms really relaxed. Both forearms should feel like they're really relaxed, almost touching each other and the toe of the club should be up to the sky or just slightly left.

So start slow this week. We're just going to start out with our feet close together. We're going to feel our weight start to shift. We're going to see how the weight starts to move the arms. Starts to create some momentum for you. Then you're going to go to a little bit wider, little bit wider, until you're in full stance width. And then you're going to see that you can start to hit it a little more crisp and a little bit further than you did last week. Just by adding a little bit of weight shift. We're not changing anything else. We're not adding a ton of rotation to the body. We're not adding a ton of width. If you feel like you can make the arms go back a little bit further, so be it. Just make sure you're watching your impact positions. Make sure you're still getting that crisp contact. And we'll check in with you guys next week.

So get out there. Get to work. Good luck. We'll see you guys next week when we start to really ramp this speed up. Let's make it a great day.

When doing these reps, should you start each rep from a standing start or is it ok to do it in a fluid motion back and forward? Also, should you pause after each bit, first on backswing, then after shifting forward and again on releasing the club?

Hi James, totally fine to do it fluid and keep the movement from the lower half working when doing this drill. Ideally that is what we are shooting for when it's all said and done. If you need to break it into pieces at first, then do so, then slowly start blending it all together. Hope that helps.

If available, when hitting these impact shots, should I monitor any launch characteristics. I think I am feeling solid impact, but I'd like to know if I am launching the ball at the proper angle. I have had a tendency to launch the ball TOO high.

Hello Merrick. Yes, these should be low to mid with a touch of draw if anything. If it is very high you need to make sure the lead wrist is flat/bowed at impact.

Hello, it looks like Chris does not have secondary tilt on this drill, am I seeing that correctly? I was thinking there should be more, let me know. thanks Chad

I don't see the axis tilt either Chad. It's just a drill that starts with a very narrow stance and Chris even gets out of NJA while doing it and explains why. Looks like a good drill to get the body pulling the club to the lead side instead of using the arms to me. Then you can widen it and get into a proper setup position with axis tilt once you get the motions down.

I'm really enjoying these drills. I have a great set up to do them until I get them right. I'm fighting some old habits. One of them is to grip the club tight along with tensing my wrists and forearms. I know I'm trying to control and direct the club head to and through the ball. I realize now that's the reason I don't get the club speed I should or get that crack sound like a broken baseball bat. Do you maintain the same grip pressure, forearms and wrists tension through out the swing? On a scale of 1 to 10 what kind of pressure and tension should I have throughout my swing to make my most productive swing? Thanks
May 28, 2018
64x64
Craig (Certified RST Instructor)
Hello Dugald. Glad you are enjoying the series. The typical tour pro starts with a grip pressure of 2 at address and ends with an 8 at impact (1-10 Scale with 1 being the lightest). Tension will gradually increase. However, you goal is to maintain light to mid tension to allow for the club to properly release. You want your muscles to stay soft and ready to work. Nothing in the hands-arms should be overly tense.

Hi Craig, I am going through this set of video's slowly and currently part way through No 3 in terms of reps. The one significant problem I have with my full swing is weight shift. My feeling is that I do not have enough time to shift the weight and I presume this is because my arm's are too active and the sequencing does not feel right. On a practice swing I feel the sequence correctly (or so it seems), get a great weight shift so you can appreciate the frustration when I cannot replicate this feeling and move over the ball. I feel that if I could master this move ball striking would improve dramatically and I would be able to play some great golf. Although my handicap is coming down (albeit slowly) I am sure executing this move correctly would really 'open the door'. Any thought's much apopreciated.

Hello David. Have you tried the RST Tempo Drill or Weight Shift Sweep Drills? If you can practice some slow steps to force weight transfer without rushing the other half in a fuller swing it may be easier for you to transfer to a ball strike.

At the second checkpoint, in the 3 o'clock position with the toe up, should the club be pointing directly at the target? Should it be aligned with the toes? I have a tendency for the club to come in too shallow and then to pull hard left to save the shot, so trying to get a better sense for which "direction" the club should be swinging

Hello Joseph. The club is rotating on an arc. It will be slightly inside pointing straight at the target with the arms still in front of the chest. You can see a reverse DTL image in the Arms vs. Body Release Video.

At the normal stance width point and I have 600 reps to go. Have trouble holding back release of the club as I shift left. Watched video 3 and you mentioned that one can shift left and release at same time after one has each of 3 motions down. Can the same be said of the drill in this video 3 or is it important to make 3 separate motions?

Micah (Certified RST Instructor)
Hello Stephen. The point of video 2 is to gain a sensation of allowing your weight shift to pull your arms and club into and through impact. The only difference with video 3 is adding in rotation. Think of video 2 as a lateral movement and 3 as a rotating movement. But even in video 3 you are still using your weight to pull the club into the correct positions by relaxing the arm muscles and shifting into the lead side.

I am confused. You look like You are just shifting laterally in these first two videos. Isn't the properbweightbshift a combination rotation and lateral shift. Your hips only movelaterally. Explain. Maybe Webster's later?

When you shift the weight into the lead heel should the hip bump cause an increase in secondary axis tilt that shallows out the club path and keeps the head back or should we think of shifting the weight and keeping the lead shoulder low not worrying about head position too much yet
April 11, 2017
64x64
Craig (Certified RST Instructor)
Hello Anthony. Don't worry too much about the head position in this drill because you need to get the feeling for moving weight back and forth. The proper shift with passive upper half will allow you to have enough secondary tilt to shallow out for drill.

Why the strong guidance to keep the trail leg heel on ground for this drill? What is wrong with letting the hip turn a bit with this drill?
April 2, 2017
64x64
Craig (Certified RST Instructor)
Hello Robert. The focus of the drill is for weight shift. If the heel rises early the golfer will tend to have early extension and not maintain their spine angle. The trail foot push is commonly overused because players think they need to push to shift. Also, golfers tend to already rotate and push too soon bypassing weight shift. The drill helps reinforce that weight transfer can help create momentum, power and flow to a golf swing.

All the drill show a lateral shift with swing that I don't see in professional golf swings. Also hard to do with shoulder glide you show. Does not the rotation of chest around spine load right hip, and then pulling of left hip release tension from the rotation
January 31, 2016
64x64
Craig (Certified RST Instructor)
Hello Joe. Sometimes the shifting in the video when drilling will look to be exaggerated. However, I can assure you that the professionals shift their weight in the swing. We are only looking a a few inches of movement total. Take a look at the Weight Shift Video Part 2 to see how looks can be deceiving. Rotation of the chest around the spin will make the trail hip turn, but it won't guarantee a load in the glute. If you pull from the lead oblique it will release some tension by pulling the hip open. We aren't endorsing a closed hip slide. The lead leg will have to externally rotate (Perfecting Impact Bonus Video).

joe
I watched video but missing something in the explanation. Are you suggesting glute has to engage before chest turn starts? Sorry but I am confused
February 1, 2016
64x64
Craig (Certified RST Instructor)
Hello Joe. The trail shoulder after the takeaway will start to pull the trail hip open. Some players don't shift or allow for any hip turn. What I wanted you to gather from the video is there is a lateral shift, but with the turn of the hip it will look like the golfer hasn't moved at all. In reference to you not seeing a lateral shift in tour pros.
February 1, 2016
64x64
joe
Ok. Let me try this. The planting of trail foot engages glute and as glute loads trail hip rotates so that net effect is spine angle and base of spine actually move minimally. If just plant foot without glute engagement and turn becomes pure shift back off center to back. If just turn shoulders , opens hip without engaging hip and shift spine in reverse pivot???
February 1, 2016
64x64
Craig (Certified RST Instructor)
Hello Joe. Yes, it sounds like you are gathering it. It might not go all the way in the get go to a reverse pivot, but create a stack and tilt move.

Thanks for getting back to me. Yes I've had 2, basically the instruction was "keep the angle of your shaft on your downswing (as I usually come horrible over the top)". I've been trying to do so, but I am struggling badly in contacting the ball. Hi Craig, when performing these drills with the shift, half of them are a decent impact position. When you turn the lead hand towards the target it releases the club and the right hand then straightens a little because of the release of the club and the club reduces shaft lean. Is this correct? Because I have the feeling that I am barely touching the club with the right hand. If my release is not perfect could this be just cause I am not releasing the club at the correct time.
November 2, 2015
64x64
Craig (Certified RST Instructor)
Hello Stephen. Your description sounds correct. The right hand barely on the club is good at this point in time. I would think that you are losing a little angle soon versus improper rotation of the left wrist. That will be taken care of in successive parts of this series.

I'm going over this drill in parts 1 and 2 and also combining it with the wide narrow wide drill. So in this drill Chris slightly folds his elbow. So if I practice this like he demonstrates its getting me used to folding my elbow early which is contrary to the wide narrow wide drill. It does teach proper release in both parts but I don't want to develop a bad habit. Is it ok to not fold my elbow in these drills?

Chris - do I understand you correctly from this video that we should use our weight shift to move our hands through impact? Does that mean that on a full swing we should keep our weight over the right foot until our hands drop down to around 9:00 o'clock, and then shift left to move our hands through impact? I hope the answer is yes, because I've had some success experimenting with that in the past. But I've always understood (including from other videos on this site) that on a full swing the first move on the downswing is to shift your weight to the left, which is supposed to automatically drop your hands down to the 9:00 position (not my experience). So, do we use weight shift to drop our hands to down to the 9:00 o'clock position, or do we use weight shift to move from 9 to 3?
October 21, 2015
64x64
Craig (Certified RST Instructor)
Hello Steven. The first move from the top is to shift the weight to the lead side. Staying passive with the shoulders and arms the move will help get the club into the correct position coming down. It is a blend of weight shift, gravity and pull. You can see this well in the Re-Shaping Your Swing for Lag and the How to Swing from the Ground Up.

I know that this might be getting ahead of things, I think that this will be covered in parts 3 and 4, but here goes. When I add some real weight shift (basically moving into a full swing while doing the drill), it fells as though my body is moving much slower, and my hands coming into the hitting area are really moving fast. When I really release the club, it seems like the clubhead really moves through the ball. I have seen, however, with the smaller clubs, that I seem to be hitting the ball to the left, and a great deal lower than I usually do (I'm not complaining, seems like the trajectory is more pro like!). I'm wondering if that could be because I've played with a closed clubface in order to hit the ball straight in the past using a lot of lower body movement. Thanks, Jeff
October 20, 2015
64x64
Craig (Certified RST Instructor)
Hello Jeff. Yes, this will be covered in future parts. It does sound like your closed clubface is the culprit with excessive lower body movement to help counter balance. Use the Impact portion of the 5 Minutes to the Perfect Release to help feel what square should be.

Hello John. It sounds like you are losing a little too much angle coming down and lean. That will be explained in Part 3 and 4. For right now. Use Part 1 and 2. Get the rotation correct in the wrist and make sure your allowing for the proper shift. Also, to understand why you might be hitting it fat. Take a look at the Taking a Divot Video to understand more of the fat shot.

I'm halfway my reps with this one, and although I had some virtual push ups for the right heel coming off, I do feel the difference right away. In my round this afternoon, I've added the simple short swing to my pre-shot routine to feel the weight shift and it worked very well! Keep it going - this drill series is working!

Hey Charles, so glad to hear you love the site and we are pleased to have you as a premium member. Winter time / off season is the best time to work on your golf swing. We can help you focus on the body movements and make sure that you get them ingrained properly, so that you can hit the ground running for next season. Make sure that you use your swing reviews when you are due and us instructors will help you during the process. Swing review videos do not need to be sent in from the golf course or the range, you can record the videos anywhere and we can help you out. Looking forward to helping you this off season!

HI craig Nice video.. im struggling with proper weight shift.. so this is a nice one.. anyway is it so that your takeaway is more a arm movement than the usual shoulder turn takeaway or does it just look like that on video thanks Hans

Chris (Certified RST Instructor)
Hey Hans, glad you enjoyed the video. You can do this most recent drill with some shoulder turn if you feel as though that is something you have been struggling with. Just make sure you are not getting too clouded up with too many thoughts and shifting your focus away from impact and weight shift yet. We still have some more videos in the series that will talk about rotation width and leverage.

Chris, Is it possible to do these drills with a driver? I do fine with the iron but when I try with a driver I have trouble creating a sweeping motion and instead bottom out too soon, even when I have all my weight on the left side as demonstrated in your first video. Any suggestions as to what may be causing this. I don't think I have too much axis tilt and I am not pushing with my right arm.

Chris (Certified RST Instructor)
Hey Greg, you should be able to do these drills with a driver. Are you setting up with a bit of a wider base to help promote more secondary tilt that will shallow the swing plane?

Chris, when you demonstrate this drill in the video, you: shift right, stop. Rotate to 9 o'clock, stop. shift left, stop. release. Is that how you want us to execute the drill, or were you just stopping between moves for demonstration purposes?

Chris: In this drill, are you using right shoulder glide to take club back? Or simply rotating arms to nine o'clock position? Thanks Dave

Hello David. The move will be similar to the Impact Part 1. Not a lot of focus on big shoulder rotation. The shoulder will turn, but not the main show of attraction we are shooting for.

Chris, this is so awesome! So I think I've been rotating way too much...trying to pin my right heel "down" thinking I've been shifting my weight and I haven't been! I did a few reps of week 1 this morning before playing and a few of week 2, loved the ball flight on the range but really loved the compression!!! I joined a CC and today played 3 holes that I struggle on and I was GIR on all of them. Should've birdied one of them...we play the tips and the par 4 is 460...I was 196 hit a 6 and put it 12 ft from the whole. Best part was the shape, flight and effort of that 6 iron. I need to do these reps though and get the week 2 swing on camera for a review, it's been a while. Just so geeked up about what has been missing, thanks you guys your value is priceless.

So it's a drill of course but it seems like CTs head moves quite a bit or maybe it's his body that's moving laterally and his head is joining the ride . I think I've been trying to keep my axis and head so still that I'm not shifting my weight? How do we make sure that we don't get into a swaying problem in doing these reps?
October 17, 2015
64x64
Craig (Certified RST Instructor)
Hey Robert. Chris does show the head moving a bit while we are shifting the weight in this drill. Since this is such a small swing, there is not much chance to clear the hips out to create secondary axis tilt to hold the head back in behind the shot. Videos 3 and 4 will clean all of that stuff up. For now, we are focusing on a good wrist position at impact and then adding a bit of weight shift to create some momentum.

Bob, In order to keep my right foot on the ground all the way my club is not straight down the line at 3 o'clock. it is a little to the right, Am I doing something wrong?

You could be trying allowing the spine to lean away too much from the target post impact. Make sure you are not overcooking that aspect.

Chris, I'm struggling to get back on my lead foot at impact. What is the proper feeling to have to get back over to the lead side??
October 15, 2015
64x64
Chris (Certified RST Instructor)
Hey Marcus, did you start with your stance really narrow and just try to shift your weight back and forth? Check out the stride and stomp drill in the "how the lower body works" video and also maybe have a look at the how to build a swing from the ground up video. There is some different drills in there to help you get back over to the lead side.

Ok, but I am going to try and do the drills with little or no head movement. I know that will introduce some axis tilt but I think that is ok. Thanks, Bob S.

Yes that is fine for sure. Just do your best to shift as much weight to the lead side as you can because that will help in the next videos.

Nah. My right foot is on the ground. I also blew past my 1,000 reps. But I think this video is helping or beginning to help those of us that struggle with weight shift. With that I mean, we do start the downswing from the top down instead of from the ground up. I hope this is the direction you are taking us! Are we still holding the club with the left hand last three fingers and little or no right hand? I would imagine so.
October 15, 2015

Chris (Certified RST Instructor)
Yes, you are working to keep the same feeling in the lead wrist in the back 3 fingers.

Would this also be a good week to start working the left oblique into the swing. So with the feet six inches apart, swing back, shift left, then initiate the swing with pulling the left oblique?
October 19, 2015
64x64
Chris (Certified RST Instructor)
Sure, you can add that as part of the drill as long as it is not create any unwanted distractions to the weight shift and impact.
