How to Putt - Acceleration Drill

There are few things worse in golf than hitting a huge drive off the tee, wedging it to 8 feet and then completely missing the hole with your putt. To make it worse, your playing partner just shanked a drive into the trees, skulled his second into the bunker, chunks his bunker shot to 15 feet and then drains it for par. You both walk off with 4's, but it feels like you should have had him by atleast a couple; tis is golf. But, learning how to becoming a better putter to compliment your better rotary swing ball striking is very simple and I've found the absolute perfect training aid to get you on your way in less than 20 minutes of working with it.

  • It's harder to identify problems and track progress in putting because it's such a small, detail-oriented part of the game
  • The Putting Plane helps demonstrate the slight arc that the putter travels as it moves back & through
  • Mirrored surfaces provide visual feedback to check your setup angles
  • Take a short stroke & accelerate through for solid contact and to keep the putter face square
  • The Putting Plane has holes for a tee to show you how far back to swing in the Acceleration Drill - you should be able to hit the ball 8-10 feet with this small stroke

I worked on this drill this weekend and found myself having more of a "pop stroke" and hit the putts more than stroked them. How do I keep my acceleration smooth? Any good swing thoughts?

Hello Kevin. Are you using lead hand low/stroke, or conventional grip/stroke?

Correct left hand low grip

Hello Kevin. Sounds like you quit rocking your shoulders and added some hand pop. Put a lot of focus on proper shoulder rocking back and through. https://www.rotaryswing.com/golf-lessons-blog/putting-tip-how-to-rock-your-shoulders-for-a-pure-putting-stroke/

Can you elaborate on the eye line and "inside?" Also should the left or right eye or both be behind, ahead or centered?

Hello James. The eye line should be about a ball inside. With the ball position it will be mostly on the lead eye.

It seems that the advice on accelerating the putterhead twice as fast as you take it back conflicts with the advice in the Perfect Putting Technique video. If I understand what Clay had to say, the hands slow down and the clubhead releases through the ball.

Hello Tom. When you release the putter head properly (decel of the hands and let the face rotate through) it will be accelerating. Most amateurs don't allow for acceleration due to the fear of knocking it too far past the hole. The key is you want to make sure the club head accelerates. Both are achieving the same result.

Is the follow through length equal to the backswing length or longer?

Craig (Certified RST Instructor)
Hello Luigi. For the video you will be making a shorter stroke and accelerating through. Ideally in a normal putting stroke the length will tend to match more.

I can't find the Eyeline Golf Putting Plane in the training accessories. Does that mean you don't sell it any longer? What did you replace it with? thx Terry

Hello Terry. I am unsure if Eyeline produces the exact training aid anymore. I know that we used to buy our supply from them and no longer do. To my knowledge, we don't have a replacement for it, but they may have some similar aids on the Eyeline Company Website.

Slow coming back, but faster acceleration going through?

Ideally, the stroke will be more matching. But, you want to make sure if anything you are accelerating versus decelerating.

interesting. Last year I softened up my hands and elongated by putter swing and noticed smoother putts. Also helped out with my yips. So we need to shorten our strokes?

You don't want wasted movement in the stroke. It leads to inefficiency of getting consistent acceleration. A shorter stroke provides the ability to have good acceleration through impact.

I find that many of the best putters have a short follow through/release with their putter, or at least one of very similar length to their backswing. I think that is why Snedeker uses a similar acceleration method to the one Chuck is teaching, but stops his release very short to create a "pop" type stroke. The follow through on Chuck's stroke here is much longer than his backswing which helps to ensure acceleration, however seems like it could lead to problems with distance control and striking putts solidly. Do you advocate a long follow through like the one seen in the video?

Hello Eric. The "pop" stroke as with Snedeker and T. Watson is a very effective stroke from short distances. It gets the ball rolling quickly and typically in a straight line. However, it is tough to gauge speed with the greater length of putt. I was one a "pop" stroke putter and was fantastic for 10 feet and in. However, when I started playing professionally and on different green speeds week in and week out. I struggled with distance control. The matched stroke made it much easier for me to balance out speed with the length of putt and ever changing green speeds.

I really struggle with my putting consistancy and i want to buy the eyeline putting plane ... but it seems that the product isn't available any longer. Can you recommend an other product from eyeline golf?

Hello Oliver. I apologize that I don't have a good substitute for you. However, I would recommend a Tour Gate. The tee drill everyone has seen Tiger do for years and I have used for over a decade is the best in my opinion.

I haven't studied Mickelson's Short Game book. I know that through the years he has manipulated his stroke in different ways to get the ball accelerating properly.

I have been feeling like I am stroking the ball with my right lat keeping the right shoulder down the target line. Is this a feel any of you are familiar with?

interesting sensation. How does the stroke look on camera and how is the ball rolling?

so is it the case that this This type of stroke is to be used solely as a drill and not something that you use on the course on the green? you are not recommending a Snedeker like putting stroke are you?

Hi Joseph. Yes you also use this type of stroke on the green. It's about making your back stroke shorter and have more acceleration at impact versus having a longer back stroke and losing control with your club face. So if this is the case, you can try using this technique. Snedeker has a so called pop-style stroke, which is completely different from the technique showed here. By the way, it helped him to become one of the greatest putters on tour.

Thanks Rene. You said this type of stroke can be used when playing a round on the course but it appears this type of stroke has no "release of the putterhead ala Chuck's recent video about such. Is that true and what are the downsides or cost of this type of stroke and no release? I have heard that distance control is one of those. And how is Snedeker'S stroke different from that in the video demonstrated by Chuck?
