So, should we cast the club from the top or lag it?

You can do both. My GOAT study is simply showing what the greats did in their swing, you have to decide which you prefer.

What about the right side throwing motion described in other videos as what really adds speed?

Hello Alte. A ton of things generate speed. The post/leverage pull from ground aids in whipping the club. The same as in a throwing motion. If you don't post on a stable lead side you will lose precious mph.

Craig, Hi! For clarification... during the downswing the proper sequence is weight shift, rotation, and then posting up your right leg (left-handed golfer). At what point in this sequence is the proper moment to release the club? Does it release prior to, during, or immediately following the posting up of the right leg? Thanks for your help. Ron H.

Hello Ron. No problem for the help. Let's make it simple. Shift and Post up! Shift your weight to the lead side. As you shift the hips will square and the shoulders will stay passive getting pulled into position. Post Up. Clear the hips behind you and straightening the lead leg. As you post this will trigger the release. Approx when the hands are around the trail thigh. The release will begin and complete during and following a proper post.

I 'VE BEEN DOIN THE LEFT ARM DRILLS only I have a strong grp.. the club is in the last three fingers of my left hand as I swing the club through impact, and releasing the club I feel the grip end of the club get some support from the pad of my left hand, should the club stay in my last 3 fingers, index and thumb off the grip to a full follow thru behind my head

Hello Richard. The pressure will remain in the last 3 fingers. However, from the follow through to the finish you can allow for the other fingers to support the club to not have it wobble back and forth for a more stable position.

Hello Hector. Orange Whip. You rush and have tons of tension. If you do it at half or even 3/4 of the pace you should be able to slow down the transition enough to start figuring out where you are adding tension at the wrong time. The big key is to get the practice swing perfect before ball application, or even practice a short move.

Hi Craig, Seeing images of Chuck's left hand with natural downcock, the wrist seems to be in a very cupped position rather than flat?

Craig (Certified RST Instructor)
Hello David. The various degrees of cupping will depend on grip strength and how you downcock. However, it may appear that he has a lot of cupping, but it's more on the interior of the wrist than exterior.

Hi Chuck, You say that two thirds of the power comes from the left wrist release. After watching Clay's video on hitting a fade does it imply the fade shot will have less power due to less release? thanks

Chuck (Certified RST Instructor)
You can still release the same, just slightly later to maintain full power when hitting a fade, but in most cases golfers will hold off the release slightly and that does lead to a power reduction.

I am left handed playing right handed and still have a real problem with casting the club. I have very fast arms and hands and can still generate 105 mph clubhead speed, but in my videos, I can see the club casting. I have done all of the drills and with just the left hand on the club, can maintain lag. I have been able to hit most of our par 5's at Silverado South in two and a couple of par 5's on the North. I know if I can just learn the correct timing of weight shift and downcock, I could gain a lot more clubhead speed; but nothing seems to correct the casting. I am working on just "dropping my hands" at the same time of shifting to the left heel and flattening out the club by pronating the left wrist, but hitting a ball has been tough. At times my right hand just comes off the club, so I do not feel like I am being right hand dominate? What am I missing?

Hello Caleb. It sounds like you are rushing the initial transition and also practicing from zero - hundred. I would try the swing in slower sequenced steps first. Make sure the practice move in correct and then start to takeaway the steps and blend into a smooth move. Work on Play the Best Golf of Your Life in 6 Weeks - Especially 2-4 of 6. You need less tension and to practice with a better broken down sequence.

I have a question. If 2/3 of the power is from the release of the left wrist, then why did Hogan say he wished he had two right hands?
July 26, 2017

Chuck (Certified RST Instructor)
Bigger question, why does it matter what Hogan did? Why not copy Weiskopf, or Johnny Miller? Hogan was a great ball striker but copy his mechanics? I don't think so. His book should've been called "How to Stop Hooking It - And Start Slicing if You're and Amateur".

I mentioned Hogan because Chuck referenced him in the price. I agree with what Chuck said, but can't reconcile it with Hogan's statement about wishing he had two right hands.

And you needn't try! Hogan pushed mightily with the right hand to help keep the face open - which is exactly what most amateurs already do quite well! The club has a very hard time releasing when pushing from the right side, which is what Hogan wanted because of the numerous other issues he had in his swing that lead him to spend his entire career fighting a nasty hook.

Dear Chuck, Why should we right handed people lead with the left dominant side? Wouldn't it be better to play the right dominant side like in hockey? You stress that playing with the left trail side is so unusual for us and the brain has to be trained for that....
July 26, 2017

Chuck (Certified RST Instructor)
Because you'd have to learn the kinematic sequence of throwing all over again - but now you have to learn how to throw with your left hand! You need this throwing sequence for power.

I understand the lag components. How much of the release is happening from the post up? Is any happening from using your hands?
July 25, 2017
64x64
Chuck (Certified RST Instructor)
Kerry, when done well, you won't feel much of anything from your hands, but at the same point, they are involved to a degree because of the mass of the swinging club head, but your goal is to keep them as soft as you can. If you have a proper grip and post up and your arms are soft, the club will do most of the work for you.

Hi Chuck, I'm a right-handed golfer and understand completely the concept and realize how critical it is the role of the left hand to create and maintain the lag during the downswing. However, probably due to playing tennis since I was a kid, subconciously my right hand is almost always taking over and dominant during the downswing hence creating all sorts of swing problem. What is the best way to train our brain and muscle so that we can eliminate this issue? By the way, just had my swing review completed a couple days ago and now I'm working on the 'downcock pump drill' as recommended by Aaron. Thanks!

Hello Jait. Training yourself to be as lead side dominate as possible and slowly adding back the trail hand. As soon as you notice the trail hand taking over you will need to back down in pace or start letting it come off the club while drilling. Our students practice tons of lead arm only releases and slowly add the trail. If they feel the trail take over they remove it from the equation again.
