  • Keep things smooth and focused when working this drill
  • Transfer the energy from the drill into your stroke

Hi guys, I'm Rotary Swing Instructor Chris Tyler.

And today I'm going to teach you guys a very valuable drill to help you out with your lag putting and help you develop some feel around the greens.

Okay, In today's video, I want to teach you guys a little bit about feel.

And a great drill that you can use before you go out onto the golf course to help you get the ball a little bit closer to the hole.

Now, feel is one of those things that, no matter what, a golf pro or any of your instructors have ever taught you in the past, feel is one of those things that's developed through practice.

Okay, Feel is not one of those things that we can really try to push you into learning.

And I want to teach you guys a drill to help you develop some feel as you move forward in the game of golf.

Okay, so a lot of times when we see people hit a 50, 60 foot putt, predominantly beginners or juniors, You'll see them step up and I have this towel out there as a reference point so you can see.

And this is set at about 60 feet.

You'll see them line up and they bomb the ball past the towel, okay, or you'll see them come up way short.

So they've developed no feel for these style of shots.

Okay, So I want to teach you guys a very effective drill that you can put into use.

And ultimately, It's going to help you develop that feel, which you can start to practice more and more and become a better.

Lag putter and get the ball a little bit closer to the hole.

So the way you want to do this drill, This is a great drill for those of you that have this problem where you're running the ball across the green, is I want you to step up, take a ball in your right hand or if you're left handed use your left hand, But I want you to.

Basically, we're trying to roll the ball onto the towel and we're going to try to keep a very smooth motion when doing so.

We don't want to take it back really hard and then jam it through, we want to make sure it's a very smooth motion.

So when I take it back I'm trying to roll the ball onto the towel, okay, so you can see there that I'm going to come up maybe right onto the towel here.

Okay, so I've just developed a feel for how far this distance is.

So now once I get a few balls thrown or rolled up there and I start to get it around the towel, What I'm going to do is I'm going to transfer that and I'm going to use that same amount of energy in my stroke.

Okay, I'm going to try to keep it very similar to the motion that I was just making with my throwing or rolling the ball onto the towel.

So what we'll do here is we'll go ahead and set up, I'm remembering how much energy I just used to roll it onto the towel, okay, and you can see that my distance is much better that time.

Obviously I pulled the hook that one a little bit, so we'll try another one here.

Trying to use that same amount of energy.

Okay, so now my speed is starting to get better, that one's a little bit slower.

So this is a drill that we need to start practicing more and more.

So if I've lost the feel, then we're going to go back to the golf balls, take it in the right hand, we're going to keep it very smooth, we're going to try to roll the ball onto the towel.

Okay, so my speed is starting to get better there.

So I'm approximately around the towel there, so that's good.

Now this drill is going to help you get the ball closer to the hole, and then once you start practicing your three, four foot putts, five foot putts, we also have the Phil Mickelson video, the Around the World putting drill, that's great.

Alright, so work on your lag putting, make sure you start to develop a feel for the game and get the ball up and in every time.
