In this video, I'll show you how we took playing professional Cory Cooper's ball striking and made it more crisp as he prepares for the Sanderson Farms PGA Tour event next year. He qualified for the event by winning the Louisiana PGA Section event that exempt him into the 2015 PGA Tour event. To better prepare Cory for the demands of PGA Tour greens, we needed to shallow out his angle of attack to help him hit the ball higher. To do this, we had to help him learn the proper amount of lag of solid ball striking because he simply had TOO MUCH lag. I am going to show you how to get rid of excess lag and release the club efficiently for a boost in clubhead speed. I am also going to show you how releasing the club properly will help you gain more control over your ball flight and increase your consistency and accuracy.

  • Shift left before the hands and arms start down
  • Allow the rotation from the torso to pull the arms down into the hitting area
  • Release the golf club with very little tension in the lead wrist

In sequence drill, if stop at club parallel you have no momentum when releasing. Do you have to move the arms only? Thanks so much.

Hello User23973. Yes. Because that goal is to start releasing. You will basically feel the weight of the club fall as the forearms turnover.

Hello Jay. Some players may be a little more than others. But, the trail arm will have some slight straightening by that position.

Hi Craig. I actually tried some rep's with a straighter trail arm outside my leg, ( shaft parallel to ground). It feels as if I'm punching a table at my side, lol. Guess what, on video I was more shallow, so I know it works. Too bad I hit everything fat.

Hello Jay. If you are hitting the drill fat you may be releasing the angle too soon. Do you tend to have too much lag in your swing, or too little?

Im a single digit handicap, my lag is just about right. I hit this drill fat because I tried to straighten my arm from the elbow. Probably a tad too much.

How is it possible to release the club as fast as you can without going left? It would seem that the faster the club is released, the more leftward the ball should go.

Hello Andrew. The club will be square at impact. When you follow the design of the club it will return properly. You want to be able to release the club as hard as possible and never fear left (for right handed player). Start by mastering basic rotation first with smaller shots. Perfecting Impact Part 1.

Hi Craig, in these drills have we to pull with oblique or push heel into the ground, or do we miss this step in these drills and just concentrate on letting the club fall and the wrist rotating? I recognise that we get seated left first though. Thanks. Stephen

Thanks, Chris. You do a great job explaining the points in your videos without resorting to cliches. I finally feel like my backswing is in good shape, but I've still got my "old" downswing and I feel somewhat lost now when actually hitting the ball. This gives me something to focus on.

I'm a plus 1.5 handicap and I have just the opposite problem. I'm not keeping my lag, but the club is coming down on plane because almost all my worst misses are short in play. I to have sequencing problem. My arms and torso start together so I have to violently rotate my hips to lead into the hitting area. My focus this winter has been to work on this, but it's a nasty habit that has kept me from hitting the ball far enough to attack longer golf courses. This is my first month with RST.

Good luck with the work. If you have any particular question along the way. We will be happy to help you fix your lag/sequencing problem for good. I would advise you to upload a swing for review. Have one of our instructors find the main culprit in your downswing causing the lack of angle.

Robert, In order to take advantage of getting narrow during the downswing, you have to release the energy and get wide again during impact and follow through. So, it is entirely possible that if you're not releasing the angles that you created that you will come entirely too steep into the ball. R.J.

John, Stay loose, don't swing with the upper body from the top of the swing, save all of your upper body energy for the last couple feet of the downswing. Use your torso and lower body to get you into the attack position where you can release the club with your full force at the bottom of the swing. R.J.

This is me in the video and without Chris explaining it to me in detail, I may not have gotten it. I like to think I'm a good golf instructor but I'm weird about changes in my swing. Trusting Chris has really helped me a lot. I don't get to practice a lot, but when I do I make it count. I have too many goals for my golf game to know take the right steps towards improving. If anyone can ever go see Chris in person, DO IT!
